I really hate it when people bash our country for our infrastructure projects saying we are so far behind or have poor oversight and blah blah blah. To be fair, in some cases that can be true, but it’s not a matter of complacency by the U.S it’s simply the fact that as a culture we love to drive. Europe and Asian countries are so far ahead in some instances because they started building centuries ago. Most countries don’t have the luxury of being huge, wide, and open geographically. Not sure if most people have ever been to Europe but I have and I can tell you that the countries are beautiful but highly condensed. From the very beginning, most European and Asian countries had no choice but to go underground as they have no space for super wide freeways and highways. The U.S had the luxury of never having to go underground, until recently. And when it comes to Asian countries in particular, they are able to build so fast because they don’t have as many safety regulations or environmental ones. For example, China has destroyed many habitats for animals because there are no regulations stopping them from doing so. And they already had a rail infrastructure to expand rather than build from scratch. I wouldn’t say that the U.S is super behind, our geographic needs are different, and so are our laws, regulations, and much more. We built infrastructure that supported our needs at the time, but not now. It is what it is. Upgrading infrastructure will cost billions but we have no choice. Look at all the progress LA is making right now. They have been working non-stop to expand their subway and improve their freeways and its making a difference. Most major work should be done by the next summer Olympics. They are also improving bike lanes and bus lanes. The high speed rail is also making great progress in CA and the LA to Vegas section has already started construction.
I think you need reassess your historical lense of infrastructure in this country. The truth is that the US was built on rail. Ironically, being wide open is actually better for rail than cars. Think about it, how far can a car get on a single tank of gas? Maybe 6 hours/300 miles? That's a lot of infrastructure to build up to support car travel. Rail on the other hand, can travel far longer far faster, reducing the amount of infrastructure needed. Also, the fact that we love to drive is driven by the fact that our cities and towns were destroyed by the highway and auto lobby in order to make driving the most convenient form of travel. They intentionally destroyed dense, walkable areas in favor of wide car lanes and huge parking lots, making it very inconvenient to do anything but drive. You can look at how we set up planning districts in the 30s with the department of housing and urban development to see this car centric design was baked into government regulations and standards for how things got funding to be built. So it's no wonder that Americans "love to drive," because ultimately, we have no other choice.

The Republicans sued and sued and sued and sued. But finally they got through all that. And the first federal money had to be spent by a date certain, so things definitely got a bit rushed at the beginning. And then there is the problem that the US has never done HSR before. As the saying goes, mistakes were made. Fortunately, things are running well now. The first 100+ miles that will be used for testing should be in use by 2027. All the equipment must be tested at 250 mph by law and there is no place now in the US that can test at over 165 mph. 171 miles should be carrying passengers by 2030. It is like the Interstate System, parts of which still aren't finished. But grand visions have to start somewhere and California has succeeded in such many times before. The Interstates were built with 90% at first and 80% later of federal money, and no, that didn't all come out of gas taxes, which haven't been raised in a quarter century and are not adjusted for inflation. As of April 30 $12.6 billion has been spent on the project and of that $2.6 billion is federal funds. More federal funds have been authorized, which much be matched by the state, but not spent. When you see these numbers over $100 billion bandied about, they are for hundreds of miles, sometimes approaching a thousand miles, of construction including tens of miles of tunnels. This is a large, long term project. Remember, lots more cash goes from California to the federal government than the reverse. California subsidizes quite a few other states.

@@jeremywillson3497 It has been dead for a decade and they still pop money into it
That is the idiots we have in Sacramento running our state into the ground
Yup same here glad I got out
And we are still paying for it!!
@@mrslucio73where’s the money and why do people still vote for the Marxists who have destroyed california?
Thank you Kevin. The whole project is a joke.

They just mandated fuel mileage requirements which are impossible to meet! No mandates?
The auto industry has long said any new requirement is technically impossible to meet, be it safety, pollution, or mileage. Early in the air pollution requirements, GM said the new standard was physically impossible, but Volvo was already demonstrating it. So don't be surprised if they cry wolf again. They are just trying to hold down costs of purchasing the vehicle, even if it transfers the costs of air pollution on the population as a whole.

High speed rail in CA should've been shut down the moment they discovered the inability to safely tunnel through the mountains north of Los AngelesAngeles in Sylmar (demonstrates the stupidity of this project). Sylmar is the epicenter of the 1971 earthquake. Who in their right mind drills a tunnel through seismically unstable mountains?
Switzerland, china, Japan all have miles of subway and high speed rail tunnels under mountains and seismically active regions.
Hell japan is the most active place on earth for earthquakes and they still build safe reliable transportation and tunnels.

To mandate EV to Americans is completely UNAMERICAN
And ripoffs
I remember hearing that breathing the air in LA was like smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. So California has a right to try to clean up their air. In addition the mandate is targeting 2035. As of 2025 you won't be able to buy a Toyota Camry that isn't at least a hybrid. No more ICE. The rest of the world is moving to EVs.
So is trying to overturn the Constitution, putting judges in place who follow your agenda, taking bribes and Lord knows what else.
Personally, globally we need to ban ICE engines years ago. We're merrily marching towards environment where mankind is... our children and their children won't be able to live in safe and resourceful nature. This isn't about American or Un-American. It's survival of our species.
That's why it's not happening.
No Bans & less Mandates
Kinda too late. Congress already decided that it has the authority to stop any vehicle, starting with the 2026 model year.

"As we’ll hear today, the United States subsidizes the fossil fuel industry with taxpayer dollars. It’s not just the US: according to the International Energy Agency, fossil fuel handouts hit a global high of $1 trillion in 2022 - the same year Big Oil pulled in a record $4 trillion of income.
In the United States, by some estimates taxpayers pay about $20 billion dollars every year to the fossil fuel industry. What do we get for that? Economists generally agree: not much. To quote conservative economist Gib Metcalf: these subsidies offer “little if any benefit in the form of oil patch jobs, lower prices at the pump, or increased energy security for the country.” The cash subsidy is both big and wrong." - Congressional budget committee.
Aircraft consume massive amounts of fuel and add to deterioration of the environment. Oil and gas industry fear the electric rail system getting a foothold in the USA. That's probably one reason other countries far surpassed the USA in rail systems.

They are not conflicting - if this guy can't see the difference he shouldn't be in Congress - the problems California is having with pollution, traffic, wildfires, heat, drought, population growth, earthquakes, mudslides - they have to take action within their borders that may not apply elsewhere in the country. The blurred lines between states' rights and individual rights guaranteed in the Constitution, which the right and the supreme court are dismantling as fast as they can, should be this guy's concern, not trying to trap Buttigieg into answering a non-question. States are removing individual rights that are and should be guaranteed rights to all Americans, but curbing climate issues that are extreme in California doesn't necessarily fall int that category. Stop quoting the New York Times - and do your own research, then report those facts.

California IS NOT THE BIGGEST STATE
17 years and well over 100 billion dollars have been spent( on ) California high-speed rail. Why is the federal gov taking taxpayers' money and giving it to California with no requirements at all? Why hasn't the IG investigated where all this money has gone. The projected finished price tage was 40 billion. It's now over 100 billion actually spent, and not 1 mile of track has been put down.
My opinion is that this project is actually some type of monumental memorial like the pyramids or the great wall of China. High speed rail DOES NOT refer to completion date or a multi stop trip through the San Joaquin valley.
So far, only $11.2 billion has been spent on construction of the initial operating segment. Much of that will be ready for laying track soon.
@kibashisiyoto6771 OK. I haven't seen that anywhere, but let's say it's correct. What happened to the 88.8 billion? And why has it taken 17 years to get to this point?
The state of California is asking for another 40 billion from the federal taxes just to complete the 1st section in the next decade.
@@jamesmcd71 The $100+ billion dollars is the current estimated budget for the full phase 1 system. It's taken this long because of lawsuits, ostensibly NIMBYs, but probably in reality funded by the oil, auto, and airline interests. There has been some mis-management, mostly because this project is the first of its kind in the US and we don't know how to do these things.
