How does it determine oil life remaining? A sensor, milage, time? And if milage, what milage? 3,000?
Any help would be appreciated.

It goes off mileage, and newer vehicles are set typically somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 miles. Since new vehicles take full synthetic oil they like to run them longer. Me personally I never let mine get past about 4,000.
