I think about this on a near daily basis lol. They have a lot of connections too. Gene Hoglan drums for both of them and byron stroud, the bassist for syl, was actually dethklok's tour manager for at least the first tour.

Devin is such a performer, I love his stage presence, it's amazing, always brings a smile to my face. This version might actually be BETTER than the album version. It's more intense. Devin's really feeling it! With those screams @ 2:33 you just know. I find myself coming back for these video's every week, they're freaking awesome.
I love how Devin makes such an effortless transition from sounding like an angel from the highest cloud in heaven to a demon from the lowest level of hell. Just blows me away everytime.

John Kosar Yeah. Open C major mainly. His 7-string are Open Cmaj + Drop G. Same remark for the Open B : Open B maj, with added Drop F# for 7-string. Got to use a .65-.70 gauge to get enough string tension on the lowest of all.
if its intentional what he does there (and i definitly think it is) then hes a fkin genius! even if u look on the songs with music theory background they are SO ineteresting and good written! he thought throug every single note, every chord, every pause, every tempo, every dynamical aspect, every submission, just everything! he also revolutionised my guitar tuning which is D/B/F#/B/F#/B/F#/B thanks to the greatmaster of simplifying. thanks for your attention :) JU
If there was a sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas it should be of the ghost of Jack Skellington headbutting spooky clowns to this song for 90 minutes.
People don't listen to demos for the sound. Les Paul himself said that "people are sold with their eyes" or something along those lines. You could drill a hole right through the guitar to hang your winky through and Devin's endorsement would have everybody doing it.
well of course it sounds like it should be from a musical its from the album deconstruction which is a dark fantasy story and According to an interview with Townsend, the album is a concept album focused around a man who is obsessed with finding the true nature of reality. In the process of this journey, he goes to Hell and meets the devil. The devil shows him the secrets of the universe, presenting a cheeseburger to him. However, being a vegetarian, the man cannot eat the cheeseburger, rendering his attempts at working out the true nature of reality pointless.
my favourite Dev album is probably the first one i heard, which is Ki (so im not just one of those "SYL-FOREVERR" guys) BUT that being said, can you imagine how fucking intense Strapping would be these days with Devin being this in control of his voice and mind! this is awesome!
I love "Ki" too. I started with Devin singing for Steve Vai and it didn't show Devin at anywhere near his full artistry in that band member capacity. Fast-forward and "Ocean Machine" rocked my world, then years later "Ki". My God, that title track's arpeggio ending ...
Sounds like a Tim Burton soundtrack that went heavy metal. I just have images of Tim Burton movies as I am listening to this. Great stuff. More please.
Devin's music is vast. Just like Hendrix wrote an incredible guitar show. Devin writes music to enhance his Epic vocal abilities. What a pure genius. :
can someone photo shop the skullet into this vid, this is kinda weird for me, as i havnt really listen to or seen much of Devon for about 10 years during his straping days and he hasnt changed still an amazing singer and composer.
got tickets for 12th March 2017 Tesseract as support. only 24 years after seeing him with Steve Vai in 1993. can't wait, as an older git we now even got a hotel for the night in Bristol. also, this song was actually him saying good bye to the comfort zone of his lifestyle as the lead of Strapping young lad, cleaning up his act, and moving on to a better, more responsible life (i think he was also om drugs back than)
+Bjorn Olson The deconstruction album, sure, but not really this song. Dev's said on a few occasions that the song was a criticism of religious zealotry.
everytime i watch or listen to something Devin does, i end up playing my guitar. Me: ''how did you get on my lap, guitar?'' guitar: "shh. just let it happen''
It's quite incredible to consider that he was once just considered another singer for a band that wasn't his own works. Including his outstanding solo work, along with Strapping Young Lad (which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea), I'd say him not being involved with Vai beyond Sex&Religion was a smart move; intended or otherwise. Steve Vai is a great musician but man does he not reek of pretentiousness, Devin at least maintains credibility while not taking himself too damn serious. Just a thought.
You do make a valid point about Vai. I remember seeing him during the G3 tour. He was just flaming it. Honestly though, we have to look at the fact that he put more work into his playing than anyone else. I spend a lot of time on the guitar, but I got older and stopped playing 16 hours a day. That said, Devin is amazing, he just plays and makes studio quality music when it seems like he's barely trying. Anyways, I thought it was funny that the radio people were cheering Eric Johnson more than Satriani or Vai, considering they made him look like a little boy on a toy guitar.
Starts his performance by saying he is sorry. So Canadian.
Why we Finns comes so well along with them! :D by Tinja&Markku
@@MarkkuKoljonenwTinja right on buddy
At least he's not surrendering like french people.

So weird seeing him perform such a heavy track without a band but he nails it. That second verse is sick. What a performer. Can't wait for more!
he did a good job singing ISHAHN's chorus vocals....great song...dev has a mean sound...guitars dont look complex...that wall of sound is just brutal
He also tunes his guitar in a way that not many other players do.

Sounds like something Tim Burton would like.
It's basically 'What if Danny Elfman did extreme metal?'
Thank you Devin Townsend for encouraging people to wear ear plugs at concerts.
those are IEMs...not ear plugs
OK except he recently stated that he thinks people should protect their hearing because he has severe tinnitus from not doing so.
bmhyakiri Yeah he said that in an interview (I think on EMGtv).

Probably the most fully-fledged vocalist in history. So talented.
Second to Christian Älvestam but that is by no means a bad thing!
GrumpyGrebo Or Daniel Heiman....
He recorded more than one video for them, so there will be more. No need to worry about it being an odd choice.
Excellent, I was hoping for more. I was surprised how good this was, even without Ihsahn.
from 0:21 is sounds like it should be in musical. Or a very dark children's film. that sounds twisted but there's something about it
Yeah it sounds very Danny Elfman-like.
I love it too, try "In Abhorrence Dementia" by Limbonic Art, the atmosphere gets darker everytime you listen that record through.
