Man what an excellent piece of storytelling this scene is. Diddy doesn't recognize his old friend because of this terrifying change. At first Donkey Kong refuses to acknowledge that anything has happened, choosing to live in denial of the horror he has become. Diddy keeps trying to break through to him, knowing that the old DK is trapped there somewhere. Eventually he breaks through and DK slowly starts to realize something is wrong. He becomes fully aware of his own mechanical monstrosity. You can see the hopelessness in his eyes as he repeats, "I'm a metal head." DK has given up. There is no other option for him than to live in this inescapable hell, suffering for all of eternity.
