- Brian Thomas Wenzel (24 May 1929 - 6 May 2024) was an Australian actor, comedian, director and singer. He was in the entertainment business for 75 years, including circus, stage, television and film (including made for TV movies and theatrical release films).
After numerous character roles in Crawford Productions serials films and after appearing in the ABC serial Certain Women, he was cast in the permanent role of Sgt. Frank Gilroy, in "A Country Practice" which he played from 1981 and 1993. The role of Gilroy earned Wenzel a Silver Logie Award for Best Actor in 1981.
He had a small role in 1995 in Neighbours as Gordon "Flakey the Clown" Orchard. He was also briefly a cast member of Rove Live in 2009.
Brian died in a nursing home in South Australia weeks before his 95th
Wenzel began his acting career at the age of 17, and notably starred as Mr Cox in Nine's The Young Doctors.
The performer leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Linda Wenzel.

Loved him. Wonderful dad to vicky on a country practice. I'll miss him. The 80s weren't easy for our family, but there was always a country practice.
This is very sad news Frank Gilroy was one of my favourite actors on A Country Practice he'll be sadly missed by us all.
Peter, I agree but Frank Gilroy wasn't an actor, Brian Wenzel is the actor who played the part of Frank Gilroy oi the series. Still love the tribute, though. Take care and all the best.

A Country Practice with these episodes from the 1980s and '90s that had Brian Wenzel in them ought to be brought back into the 7:30pm timeslot. Today's generation don't know what they missed out on. It would be far better to have re-runs of A Country Practice on TV in the Prime Time timeslots than the rubbish that's on in them nowadays. Not only is it sad news to hear about Brian Wenzel's death, I have also noticed that he fell only 18 days short of reaching his 95th birthday.
Loved Country Practice Growing up .Would love to revisit and pick it up on dvd but it’s so darn pricey.

Recently saw the episode where Frank was involved in arresting Councillor Muldoon.
Brian played Sgt Frank Gilroy to perfection, it was the most realistic portrayal of a police officer on television.
Watched in the early 90s in Detroit on CBC. My introduction to the show was Luke living with the Gilroy’s. It’s such as shame the show is unavailable here in the States, and as far as I know, anywhere else…seems the DVD release stopped before the 90s era.
Noone else could have played a better role as Frank Gilroy.
