Old Metallica vs. New Metallica

  • this one shows Metallica's enormous change in the last two decades. from the world's ultimate and most brilliant high-power thrashers to the band they are today. for some people "they're getting older" might be an argument, but for me it's not a valid one, especially if you watch other 80ies thrashers like e.g. Overkill & Testament, which still of course in an age-adjusted way blow your mind away! in fact they still are a nice band, but the awful truth is, with their (for any reason) horrible style-changing in "load" they lost their roots and since then step by step everything what made them so unique! compared to their older times the sound is horrible, the gigs/songs look factitious, they don't really feel what they're playing and that's the worst thing a metal band can happen...

    -Bring REAL AMPS on tour

    I'd like to see Metallica make a song that's as stereotypically "New Metallica" as possible. I.e., James saying "Yeah!" as the only lyric, Kirk playing the solo in a pentatonic blues scale (with maximum wah, of course), Rob plodding around the stage in his "crab walk" the entire time, and Lars messing up every 7 seconds.

    • @icedviking4485
      @icedviking4485 7 років тому +25

      I never said he doesn't fit, Jason was just better IMO. He was even better than Cliff for me. Cliff couldn't show his full potential because he died at such a young age. Although, Jason never really had a chance to show his skills too because of James and Lars. Rob sure is a great bassist and the band realised they have to move on. Because of Cliff's death, Jason had some pretty hard times in the band. Thankfully they realised it, so they give Rob more freedom.

    80's Metallica: Passionate, hungry, strong, exciting, heavy, on top of their game.
    New Metallica: Neutered, half-hearted, thin-sounding guitars, weak, a pale shadow of what they once were.
    They should have stopped in 1990, called it a day and allowed for their legacy to remain golden and untarnished. Tragic.

      actually they shouldve stopped in 1993, even though the black album was a step down from their 80`s thrash sound, it still sounded like old Metallica and their concerts were pretty sick and brutal throughout 91, 92, 93. But once in 1994 they totally changed their looks and their sounds started to become pussified and weak not to mention james voice was done.

There is so many factors that have led to this point, but we must be happy on what they have given us and appriciate their hard work and incredible talent

    I think aging is actually totally a valid argument. Of course no one can sing in his 50s like in his 20s. James is now rarely singing with anger in voice because he don't want to force his voice or lose it and he made it because he still have an awesome and powerful voice and can sing pretty awesome in his 59 years old now.
    Their shows are still so energetic and powerful! Also their songs from Load to now are also amazing and I love them but that's only my opinion.
    But fact is that aging is reason of things and people changing.

Lars is trying so hard to catch the fire again. Het's voice are becoming good again. Check the Ride the Lightning performance dude , really you hear things that you wasn't able to expect from metallica in last 6 - 7 years.

    Young Metallica was way more energetic, aggressive and dedicated
    Early Hetfield’s voice was way better too: on Kill ‘em all and Ride the Lightning - sharp and bright, on the next three albums - more mature, growling
    Now Hetfield and others have less passion
    Even old songs sound weaker on their concerts now

    Hi, about to head to bed, but I saw the description and had to drop a line here.
    Regardless of how you feel about how they sound now vs then, it really doesn't matter. They don't make these albums for you. They make these albums for themselves and THEN tour as much as possible for the fans. That's where the music shines, for a couple fast examples: Creeping Death (DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE!) The Memory Remains (Crowd singing in unison until they have to be told to stop. Oh, whoops, I mentioned a song from one of those albums the people that can't stop living in the fucking past hate, my bad.
    As for the band in general, they're all in their 50s, and I'm pretty sure vocal wise you wouldn't sound the same if you sang live for 2+ hours for months on end in a year for 35 years. (It's easy to keep track of the band's age when you were born the same year)
    Yes Overkill still has face melting pace and music, they chose to stick with it, good on them. As for Metallica, people change, lives change, music tends to reflect what the band is going through, hence we have the abomination called St. Anger. (Sorry, I can't back that album up in any way at all.)
    In closing, just be happy that Metallica has made and played music for 35 years.
    (Another thing I can't defend is Lars. Unless it's a huge live televised (internet broadcasted) show, he just doesn't give a shit and plays awful. I saw them in Chicago and got pissed during One because he wasn't even attempting to play it right. I also want to rip that China cymbal off his kit, he relies on that damn thing too much. )

  • @Consural
    @Consural 6 років тому +4

    Don't get me wrong, I'm no purist or anything, I still like the new stuff Metallica puts out. Hell, I even like most of St. Anger. But the truth is right here in this video: James lost his high and piercing iconic voice, Lars got sloppy and lazy, Kirk is ironically the only guy in the band who isn't trying something new when he's the only one who should be doing that, and the new guitar tones are really bland. Listen to the 1989 guitars' tones, they are just piercing your ears through the mix, sounds fucking amazing. Their new guitar sound is just... weak.

  • @knottymikes8079

    Eh...the "getting older" argument has it's validity in some ways. For many people, voices change...our bodies slow down... These guys are only 5ish years younger than my dad, so seeing them doing this versus how my dad is now (2 total knee replacements plus 2 revisions in addition to a whole host of other things slowing him down) is actually kind of awe-inspiring.
    But, folks also seem to forget...or maybe just don't know...that at one point in the 90's, James learned that his singing style was killing his vocal chords. On the advice of his physician, he had to learn the proper way to use his singing voice and learn from a vocal coach. He actually still uses the same warm-up tape give to him all those years ago before shows, TO THIS DAY.
    Just my 2 cents...
    It happens. Not to ALL musicians, but it still happens...

    I think the main problem with new Metallica is that they don't seem to really care about stage production since the late 2000s. Up until the early 2000s they had great stage and sound. Now everything's feels sluggish and muddy, mostly because I think they have completely changed their sound.
    The sounds works better for playing songs from load and reload but anytime they play the really old thrash stuff the guitars just don't have that edge they used to and Lars on drums is just completely awful. His rhythm is off and his drum fills are lazy af. He just does snare fills with obnoxious cymbal crashing. He even does fills during verses and it's really distracting to listen to

    Stop the Metallica hate. James, Lars, and Kirk are still the same guys that played on the classic Tallica 80s albums, no matter how much they changed. I feel METALLICA died as a studio band right before making The Black Album(1990). But they were still a great LIVE band until around 1996. I'm glad they started playing some Thrash Metal again with St. Anger and gradually got better with Death Magnetic and Hardwired. I barely have any respect for the Load/Reload era of Metallica because they just seem like a different band and different people. But they were real people that got tired of doing the same thing and wanted to do different things, which there's nothing wrong with that. I now respect them more for getting back to their roots. Spit Out The Bone from their latest album is better than anything they did since The Black Album
