As a long-time amateur card mechanic myself, for people who don't know, Richard Turner is considered the absolute cream of card mechanics. Experts Steve Forte and Jason England, extremely well respected and skilled in their own rights, look up to what Turner can do like a child does to an adult. Moves that many fantastic card mechanics can only do 1/20 times, e.g. the Perfect Table Faro Shuffle, Turner incorporates into the beginning of his routines, and does so flawlessly. His tactility is beyond that of any other card mechanic that has probably ever lived.
Magic Man Simple, he forgot to flip it back over, when so many things are going through your mind, and you are blind, mistakes can happen. Seems to me he is amazing.
For those unaware and just watching the clip... you should know that Richard Turner is also blind (developed in adulthood). Amazing guy, amazing talent, amazing perseverance,.
He is incredible. Just a slight addendum: Turner started going blind aged 9 due to scarlet fever (although I think I've heard him say aged 7 in another interview), and it deteriorated to the point of legal blindness by age 13.
This man is one of a kind. the chance that there will ever be someone like Richard Turner ever again is very slim. I'm glad I discovered him while hes still with us!
Yes, he did mess up the false cut in the beginning of the video with the deuce, but even the greatest slip up once in a thousand times. He is in fact just a human. That being said, to me, the man is a legend and a great inspiration. Since I was a child I have loved cards and anything to do with them, rummy, poker, and especially magic. If I can one day do a quarter, with sight, of what he can do blind, I will be a happy man.
@@Kallekringla3 according to his wikipeda entry he refused to learn braile, so considering how forthright he is about his craft i doubt hed lie on that (plus lets be real, those markings would be obvious to anyone close by)
First time watching this channel. I have no idea how you do most of it, but it looks truly incredible. I’m a huge fan of Richard Turner. You’ve got yourself a follower
And if one is to believe his intro on penn and teller’s “fool us”- he is also a black belt, sooooooo.........amazing human!!!! Well done. Top card mechanic!!
You can believe it, he holds a fifth-degree black belt in Wado-Kai (or Wado-Ryu) karate and started doing karate AFTER going blind, which is friggin' amazing. This style of karate is particularly suited for blind people as it emphasizes on joint locks and throws, meaning that if a blind person was to get into contact with their opponent, they could crush him just as a non-blind person could. There's that one conversation at a tournament where he tells a guy he's blind. The guy then proceeds to say, "You're legally blind, how could you possibly fight?". Turner's answer simply was, "I don't know, find out!". The man is a badass from head to toe. There's that documentary about him, called Dealt, from 2017. It's a really great watch!
Richard is absolutely amazing, a national treasure of magic, and card tricks. While doing the second trick I was getting excited that he was gonna wreak the other guy even with that partial deck he was being handed. I know that even as sneaky as I am, I couldn't pull the wool over Turner's eyes.
It’s just the brand of playing cards. Richard pretty much exclusively uses bicycle cards in a traditional cut. You would probably recognize them if you see them. They’re pretty common. The backs have the angel riding a bicycle. The bees have that argyle back. They’re actually both made by the USPCC so it’s really just a matter of preference but the card stocks are different. Even without being blind you can feel the difference but since he is blind he likes to keep it consistent. I’ve heard him say he goes so far as to not shake peoples hands since it will affect the moisture level in his hand. Sounds crazy, but USPCC actually uses him for quality control specifically because he can judge the moisture levels in the card stock better than their machines can
@@rays5163 I thought Richard was exclusively Bees. Are you sure? That documentary from a year or so back, he gave a tour of his place and they were all Bee decks.
I think a lot of card mechanics tend to prefer bees because, visually speaking, it's easier to deal seconds or bottom dealing whereas the white margins on the bicycle cards make it more evident when you are not dealing from the top. That's been my own personal experience any ways
If he's going his slow motion I can see he never deals off the top. BUT If he deals 1% faster which is 49% slower than normal, couldn't see it. He can literally feel each card, and deal it from any part of the deck. Perfection.
Richard would have to be the absolute best of the best. To do this with your eyes opened would be difficult, but doing this blind is just simply amazing. The amount of practice and dedication to his craft deserves all the respect!
He is clearly "reading" the cards with this fingertips (since he cannot see). Extraordinary skill! He deals off the bottom with sleight of hand feeling the bottom card if it is junk he deals it out to players. If it is good he deals from the top and saves it for his partner. That's why Tim still got a couple of crapper cards (2 out of 7).
I'm amazed he still nailed it though. I thought Richard exclusively used bikes. I know bees and bikes are both produced by uspcc but the card stocks are still different so I was expecting that to really mess with him
Can anyone explain how he knows which card is which? I mean just the tracking and card manipulation itself is mindblowing, but how does he know which card is which to know where to put it? And it's not that the cards are marked, because he can do that at a poker table with a regular deck (from what I understand).
i would bet the cards have braille in the top right/bottom left corners, watch how he swipes his left thumb on the top right third of the cards over and over. thats how he could know what card is topdecked in his hand. that would be the easiest explanation for me to give all of it sense.
The routine following on 3:30 you can quite clearly see that he's dealing seconds except for Tim's card, so did he introduce Tim's perfect hand on top with sleight of hand or what? Couldn't see anything.
I think he has some kind of braille on the cards, and depending on whether he wants to keep the card to deal it to Tim, he deals seconds if necessary. By having a wild card in addition to the ace, it raises the chances he's going to run into one of them (to deal to Tim). Having the person give him a smaller stack and continually mix it maybe helps him do that as well, he has another chance for the right card to be on the top or something.
i havnt watched this video yet, i just saw a news video about Turner from 2014 and this video is 2020, im about to lose my shit knowing hes been practicing another 6 years
I just don't understand how it's possible, when the cards weren't even shuffled by himself and was cut randomly before handing to him, and not even a full deck, how did he even make sure that a royal flush is in it?
He gained senses like in a superheroes or martial arts movies. He has practiced for tens of years that his fingers became really sensitive to cards, so he use the difference of thickness or any other things to distinguish between cards. He practiced more than 10 hours daily (iirc 16 hours avg daily. Check his documentary)
"What seems to us as bitter trials are often blessings in disguise." --Oscar Wilde. I found that initial failure with my study and meditation music UA-cam channel caused me to change course. Hopefully it was a blessing in disguise.
I get being able to manipulate the cards incredibly well, but just how the fuck can he unshuffle a deck without knowing the order of the cards? My only hypothesis is that he feels the printing and knows what card he's touching that way. Which is no less insanely impressive, but at least it's not completely otherworldly.
Watching the movie prestige makes me wonder if really it's an act hes doing claiming hes blind but really not. Magicians commit to the act. Blind or not though hes amazing
He must work with braille marked cards, so he can feel which card is which. There is no other way that could what he is doing, because another person shuffles the cards. Or can he hear how they are shuffled?
No he hasn´t. He learned it through ridiculous hard work and an absolute sensititvity of his fingers. One Finger of him has probably more skill than you do.

One clue maybe is that his is rubbing his left thumb över the cards - to feel what type of card it is using braille?
