I've heard there's small copper wires on the back of the gauge that can break and I think that's what has happened with mine. Mine works intermittently because sometimes the wire is touching just right and other times it isn't. Yours might be doing the same, but hopefully replacing the sensor fixes your issue. There's more than one coolant temp sensor. The one I replaced in this video is for the gauge on the dash. The one on the front of the engine communicates with the ECU. The one on the water neck, if you have one, is supposedly for when you're using AC. If the engine starts to get too hot, it will turn off the air compressor.
Mine stays low. Operating temperature is just a little past cold. Once it gets to half way, the coolant is boiling. I replaced the radiator and haven’t had the overheating problem since, but the gauge sits basically at cold
It's most likely a problem with the gauge itself. Supposedly very small.copper wires can become detached behind the gauge and then it either works intermittently or not at all. But, definitely rule out the sensor first.

The splines will be the same on those axles. But, if the gearing is different, you will also have to swap out the front differential or re-gear it because the front and rear gearing needs to match.

@@Leino26 Did this happen after some recent work you did to the engine, maybe the valve cover gaskets? The gauge sensor is actually at the rear of the engine screwed into the intake manifold. When you do a valve cover gasket job and pull on the wiring harness near the fire wall, you can accidentally pull the wire connector off the post of the sensor. The connector doesn't lock in place. It just slips over a single post on the sensor. If that happened, you can get to it but it's not easy. The sensor is near the middle of the engine at the back. If you reach under the plastic wiring harness, you'll be able to feel then sensor with it's single post. Near there somewhere you will hopefully be able to get your hand onto the wire and connector. By feel, you need to slip the connector back over the post of the sensor. If this isn't the case and the sensor is actually still connected to the wire, the sensor is most likely bad and will need to be replaced.
@@TimmyTheToolman yes, I did the valve cover gasket!!. Oh , my thoughts were about the sensor in front of the engine. The one is behind the last 0 on 3400. I didn't think about the one on the back. Thank you so much!!!
@@Leino26 Yep, that's it then. It happened to me when I did the valve cover gasket job on my 98. A quick internet search showed me where the sensor was located. Then it was a matter of reaching the best I could into that tight area, feel for the sensor, find the wire/connector and by braille fit the connector back over the sensor post. Let me know if that was the culprit and you were able to fix the problem.
What size socket does it take? Also my 22re is reading barely above cold even when it’s fully warmed up, I’ve already replaced the thermostat with an OEM one, do you think this is what could be causing it? Bad temp sender?
I'm guessing you didn't watch the video Jake. I reckon I'm a nice guy because I searched through my own video to find the answer for you because I didn't remember the size off the top of my head. Use a deep 17mm socket. It could be a bad temp sending unit or it could be a problem with the gauge itself. Even with the new temp sensor in my rig, sometimes my gauge slowing climbs to operating temperature like it should but most times it shoots straight to operating temp like the gauge has a memory and wants to jump right there. I'm thinking it's a gauge problem.

Timmy the needle on my 02 4 runner does not move at all. Do you think the ECT sensor which is in front of the engine needs to be replace ?
@@TimmyTheToolman I am sorry. the needle does not move at all. It stays on Cool all the time. Yours move back and forth but mine do not move .
@@TimmyTheToolman I fixed the problem!!!!. Thank you so much. You were very helpful brother 👍
My 22r goes right to hot even though its stone cold same thing?
Yep, same thing I'm experiencing.
@@TimmyTheToolman thank you, every time I turn the key on it goes straight to red hot.
Timmy, do you know what the toyota part number is? Thks jc
No, I don't. I just purchased it from 22RE Performance and I link it in the video description.
Yeah, I saw that but wanted the toyota number..thks..if I find it in will let you know..jc
@@TimmyTheToolman sorry I had watched the video earlier and forgot and when I messaged I was at home with really slow rural internet and couldn’t wait for it to load. I appreciate your reply
@@carnifex2173 Gotcha. No worries.

Well, it sort of works. It's inconsistent.
