- evan is an anxious teenager who accidentally makes up a story about him and a recently-passed loner, connor. to keep the charade going, jared helps create a series of fake emails between evan and connor, pretending that they were secretly close friends.
the curtain opens, and the show begins.

the surprise musical is dear evan hansen! a surprising amount of you guessed it correctly, so i'm glad something like this was anticipated! :D
(also lmao some of y'all still expect hamilton to come out of here. refer to my 10k faq for my thoughts on that)
some notes:
1. i've been planning to do this song for a while, because it's catchy as all hell. it's probably my favorite from the soundtrack. i was originally going to do 'waving through a window' first, but i scrapped it because i had a better idea for this one.
2. since the song is about making up a story/performance, i mapped out a theatre-like production where connor is an actor and evan/jared are script writers. motifs!
3. connor's hair is hard to draw, so it took me a while to settle with a design lol
4. fun fact: the laptop jared/evan uses changes logo based on who's typing. jared - bitten bath bomb, evan - bitten tree
5. apparently the arm cast is supposed to go up to the wrist, to prevent it from moving. i didn't know this, but i think it was better with the hand out since i could incorporate more motion

Late but mental illnesses make your actual personality foggy. connor was great, but we perceived him as a bad person. evan was caught in a web that he started but everyone else finished or helped with. theyre both flawed, like Doodle Productions mentions. i like that they made the characters really deep and you can really look into them and its just awesome how they can make a fictional musical and characters so interesting.

ok for some reason the "miss you dearly" part in this animatic rrreeally got to me for some reason.. like it hurts. I dunno if this is just me but like I often forget that connor was even dead in the first place. and just connor's simple gesture of signing evan's cast really big makes it more painful to think about the line "miss you dearly" from evan's point of view. so this animatic, where his hand kind of curls into a fist but then connor's hand is there??? it was a wonderful touch. :)

A lot of people are saying they're not gay, i am not saying they're gay neither am i saying they are not but:
In the musical Connor wanted to sign Evan's cast, and Evan said "Um...you don't need to", Connor could've said "nevermind" and just leave, but he didn't. He just forcefully took Evan's hand. Evan let out a little "ow", and Connor quickly apologized "Oh god sorry" and wrote his name all over the cast.
Which i think is frickin' adorable.

This animatic has it play out almost like an alternate universe where Evan, Connor, and Jared are all really good friends, and Evan and Connor are so close they're worried other people might think they're gay and react negatively (whether they're in a relationship or not can be up to interpretation), so the three of them decide to put on a play about their friendship and how they're totally-not-gay, with Jared writing the script to help them out.
And honestly I think that interpretation is super adorable.

I remember this was uploaded the day after I listened to DEH for the first time so this was my first animating for DEH. Sincerely, Me is my favorite DEH song and I remember sitting in my dads car replaying this video for an hour blasting it through my headphones until I then had the song memorized.😂 DEH and this vid bring back so many great memories for me. It’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me
I love the fact that, in most animations, the "miss you dearly" at the end is played off as a funny joke, where evan and connor gayly sing together. But in this animatic, you can see Evan's anxiety at this part. It feels more sincere and I throuaghly appreciated that point of view I was introduced to
I think the whole stage set is a brilliant idea because of the nature of the musical and song, about putting on a show basically, caught up in lies and stuff? I just thought it was brilliant
