2 problems when the angle grinder is not used, i mean in the vertical position
1. the disc is spinning very fast in front of you with no safety parts to protect in case the disc crashes.
2. the angle grinder is rest on the cable which in time will brake it.
Otherwise, congrats for the idea to use old rusty parts.

Remove the cotter pin lock nut, then the cotter pin, then the crank arms, then the lock ring from the bottom bracket.

The guy is not a bike mechanic to say the least; at the very least, I would take the BB apart, grease it, change the ball bearings before going on...

I'm no professional,but I'm pretty sure it's not common practice to be welding with a map gas cylinder and a pressurized can of wd-40 two feet away from the general welding area.
