Again, my argument for whenever someone claims that Gretzky and Lemieux’s stats are inflated: they invented the modern game, and also, why weren’t their contemporaries putting up those numbers either?
In 1980s NHL 8 goals per game NHL! Today only 6 goals per game NHL! If Auston Matthews had played In 1982 he would had scored over 100 goals easily beating Gretzky's 92 goal record! Ovechkin ERA only 5,3-6 goals per game NHL! If Ovechkin had played high scoring 1980s he would had scored over 1300 goals easily! Canada have 650000 hockey players today! USA have 500000 hockey players today! Ovechkin's Russia have only under 100000 hockey players today! Canada and USA should have 11 players who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin today! Joe Malone scored 44 goals in 20 games why Gretzky and Lemieux scored 44 goals in 20 games!
Brett Hull 86 goals! Gretzky 92 goals! Is Brett Hull the Second Best athlete of all time? Soccer have 250 million players vs Canada 650000 players that means The Soccer All Stars would beat Orr Gretzky Lemieux easily 100 game Series 93-7!

What isn't accounted for here is clutch factor and ability to perform under pressure. It would be interesting to take a look at what Marner's point distribution looks like throughout a series. He tends to get all his points early in a series, in games that are already decided and disappears later in the series when the pressure is on. Compare this to Pasta who always seems to score a clutch goal.
Good point. Marner's only goal in the latest Boston series came in the third period when they were down 3-0 and it didn't matter at all. This guy has ZERO impact on his team, and can't play defense either (he let Pasta blow right by him when he was fresh off the bench for that OT winner). They need to trade this guy ASAP. A traffic cone would get as many points in the playoffs.
Rob, you've outdone yourself ! That's some truly AMAZING content, loved it thoroughly. Thank You ! I'd say it makes it even more impressive that the Canucks in game 1 against the Oilers this very week managed to almost entirely shut down McDavid, not allowing him to take a single shot. That's what also gave them the opportunity for depth scoring to count and get them that game 1 win. (He still got an assist though, cause he always finds a way ahah)
Man, I LOVE your videos. ty for talking hockey structure and what i was talking about last night. Draisatl is so great. 125 PP goals since 2018-19, nobody comes close to that stat. The way he slows down, freezes the puck its hard to stop.
Honestly I feel the 2nd/3rd/4th liners stepping up is what makes the difference in the playoffs. If you can score deep... you got a shot! Edit: No joke... I made this comment BEFORE you said pretty much the same thing lol.
I got to watch a whl series of my hometown royals vs kelowna rockets, I made the drive to Kelowna. They had picked up neon leon for the playoff run. When I watched Leon in the W, I knew he was going to be special. Even with the Russian vs WHL games in victoria, I had never seen a kid play the game like Leon did. He always controlled the pace of play when he was on the ice, which no matter what it was, he was the best at it, his skill and ability to protect the puck was a treat to watch.
Greeat Video Rob, I would like to see these stats overlayed with increases in TOI. We know how Edmonton rides those horses and it would be neat to see how much of that increase could be attributed to deployment. That said most guys whose point totals go down also have their ice time bumped up just not as drastically.
I’m curious to see the numbers for Panarin. Kinda wish he was on the list, I’ll look up the numbers myself and post the findings if anyone else is interested
This is a super interesting dive into the stats. I'm not surprised to see that Pasta dropped a lot, he was pretty invisible in the first round against the Leafs (until that OT winner of course!)
Great video. Ive always wondered about that. I would live to see more history about "Why are playoffs different?" Like, has this aleays been the case? Has it changed over time? Like, Gretzky and Lemieux numbers would suggest the regular season used to be a lot softer or the playoffs have now become a lot harder? We there teams like the Leafs in the past, who dominated regular season, but couldnt level up in the post-season? That qould be a very interesting video. Also, thank you for not baiting us and running a 2 minute ad in the middle of the video thus time 😁
Dallas has almost immaculate depth in their lineup. they arent the flashiest players ever, but they can score up and down the line. Faksa, Smith, Steel, Dadonov, Dellandrea who have all contributed during the regular season and postseason for that Bottom 6 scoring. some of our top guys aren't scoring a lot right now in the playoffs, but our bottom 6 has been picking up that slack yo help compensate. plus our defenders aren't afraid to get in on the scoring. Ryan Suter has a goal in the Avs series, Heiskanen was on hat trick watch in Game 2. Dallas has so much depth up and down their lines that when some guys aren't doing it, the others are right there to pull their weight
Why does every batter Marner for disappearing in the playoffs while completely ignoring that Matthews is an even bigger ghost in the playoffs? (edit - Matthews' regression is larger than Marner's over his career by far... the past 3 years skews the data).
Both players are entering their prime, which is why I specifically covered the previous 3 years. Most players on this list are in their prime or are entering it. The way I look at it, is that if the prior years were lessons for this team, this when they should be dominating
A+ content yet again with the clutch stats. Id like to see that averages on the bottom 6 of the last 5 cup winners on points per game averages comparison to regular season to playoffs. May show a lot about what it takes to win.
Would be neat to do a video on guys who famously seem to get better in the playoffs. Carter Verhaeghe's point total ticks a bit upwards in the playoffs but he's especially known for scoring really high impact goals in the games he scores too.

3:49 Um, that goal looked shockingly similar to a certain goal score by a certain Bruin player in a certain game. What's more shocking is it was the team he scored that goal against, that scored it here.
Numbers are great but a lot of the time it's that star player scoring that game winner at the right time too. I'm sure GWG would give some good insight too.
hyman, hyman, hyman. He’s coming alive in these playoffs and which I think he’s becoming a great playoff goer. I don’t think anybody would classify him as a bottom 6 player on the oilers though. You could use the example for Bouchard.? maybe?
Isn't that the problem with the Leafs? It's very hard to have an ace in your bottom 6 if you're paying 4 players $40+ million. Hope management fixes this issue in the off-season.
Nothing wrong with facts. Refs were brutal in Game 2 so many missed calls. I wanna see em play too but there were some serious non-calls in that game, both ways, but the three non-calls against Hughes were an absolute joke. Any 3 of those plays could have ended his season. Refs need to do better, period.
One other change in the playoffs is what gets called a penalty. If you are hesitant to be cross checked and slashed in addition to be body checked, you are going to be relegated to low scoring areas.
Oilers have good depth scoring. We can put kane down on the 3rd, foegle who had and outstanding 7ear. Janmark was mid but his physical presence puts us up. If Carrick comes back same thing. Henr8que has put himself on a second line to 1st line from the deadline. Brett kulak and desharnais have been solid defensively making good plays weather if it's blocking 2 or 3 shots on a shift, sprawling out their masses bodies to stop passes. Ceci broke his goaless record. We have depth and they work in the past season aswell. When mcdavid was out against the golden knights, we won that game 5-1. Do not doubt these oilers in the slightest bud
I have so many questions lol. If 1-2-2 is more successful defensively and limits breakouts, why don’t teams play that way in regular season? Why can’t teams play with similar intensity as playoffs in the regular season? Is that simply not sustainable? Another thing I don’t understand, if you can elevate your game in the playoffs like Palat for instance, why can’t he do that during regular season? Basically to sum it up, why can’t you have that playoff mentality all season long?
It's wayyyy more boring over 82 games. The Islanders of the last decade, and Flyers this season played 1-2-2. You'll see low scoring games which aren't as exciting with nothing on the line. My guess is 2-1-2, helps develop offense, and sells more tickets. In the final stretch of the season, team's switch to the 1-2-2 to start prepping for playoffs
Pasta is a such a frustrating player in the playoffs. He we be invisible for a game or 2 and then randomly show up huge in a game like last year game 7 against FLA were he nearly won the game if not for the last min goal

True, Kane did step up in 2022, and guess what, they made the conference finals. I am more-so talking about a player who elevates their game from a depth scoring role. Lehkonen and Barbashev were brought in as depth scorers
i'm confused, Pastrnak has played 24 playoff games the last three years (including the ongoing series vs Florida) and he has 18pts which is good for .75ppg. where are you getting .67?
He had a Mackinnon really low to lol seems like he pulled stats out of his ass to praise Drais and Mcdavid who by the way have never accomplished anything in the playoffs
@@Nate-vq8wy i think where i was getting screwed up is that he was using an average. i was just using the totals of his past three years, not the average.
Why I’m so relieved ovie won the stanley cup and the conn smythe with only Holtby up for debatt. Kuzy was good, but not every gane like ovie, so him about to pass Gretzky means so much. Ovechkin was at his best and won in the playoffs unlike so many others. Thornton, Iginla, Dionne, Marleau, and sooooo many others who did nothing in the playoffs. Ovechkin proved he could do it at the highest level, so his hunt for 895 is a treat.

I think Nylander is a good playoff performer but our best is rather Tavares or Reilly or woll
Trocheck. But the Rangers are doing everything to win!
For the 2018 Caps, Ovi and Kuzy were definitely the top....but the non star ones were definitely Burakovsky, DSP, and Eller.

Of course the Habs have an ace to pull out in the bottom 6 when they get back to the playoffs and his name is Mario Armia
i'm confused, Pastrnak has played 24 playoff games the last three years (including the ongoing series vs Florida) and he has 18pts which is good for .75ppg. where are you getting .67?
He had a Mackinnon really low to lol seems like he pulled stats out of his ass to praise Drais and Mcdavid who by the way have never accomplished anything in the playoffs
previous 3 year average
I hope the next Leafs coach watches this. Adjust the systems and im sure the boys will go fine
8:03 David Pastrnak has 86 points in 87 career playoff games, so are the graphs just talking about this season or in their whole careers?
Previous 3 season average, not accounting for yesterday's games
Bruh you should’ve just called this video: “why the leafs suck so badly in the playoffs” 😭
What about holloway?
Basing playoff skill strictly on PPG is such a horrible way to look at hockey
PPG is one metric. I never said it was the be all, end all stat
