Saw Rick tell this story years ago even he toured his one man show in the UK. Slightly different, he said he was offered the choice of a session fee or royalties. As he was short of money he opted for the session fee and has regretted it ever since! It was a great show, he really is a fine musician.
Saw him do his one-man show some years ago. Three hours with a short break, half hilarious anecdotes, half piano with no written music to work from. Played one bum note towards the end of the show and laughed it off. Unforgettable. Met him afterwards - lovely guy.
There's an article in Esquire magazine from April 2001 called Hammond of the Gods where Rick Wakeman talks to Ed Barrett about some of his misadventures involving (lots of) drink. I came across it in my GPs waiting room. I almost wet myself it was so funny. I asked them to photocopy it. I read it every so often. It never fails to make laugh.
I understand part of the story was that Cat Stevens was in the same studio when Rick was working on Six Wives, and in particular the piano part to Catherine Howard. Stevens heard it and wanted to use that very part in "Morning has Broken," but Rick demurred and came up with a similar part that is now famous. btw- it is no that difficult to figure out...?
That’s correct. If you listen to both pieces one after another the similarity is uncanny. Actually, the main trick are harmonic modulations. The rest are just arpeggios.
I think Rick may be pregnant 😂 Absolutely the best keyboard player in this time hands down. Even Jordan Rudis from dream theater has to admire his accomplishments
What a moron you are. This was recorded on a phone, about 30ft away, and uploaded by someone there who couldn't improve the quality. So it's hardly Rick's fault. I'm quite sure the sound technicians in the venue made sure he was clearly audible to the attendees. He had a microphone, and has been telling such yarns, live, for decades, so your claim of mumbling can hardly be true.
Rick Wakeman is like the entire Spinal Tap movie compressed into one man.
This bloke is one top bloke, not bad on the keys too. Love you RW

Wakeman is a top-tier keyboardist to be sure, but he could easily have made it a a stand-up comedian. I've been a huge fan for over 50 years.
This is hilarious, Rick. Your piano playing is awesome.
One of the true greats of British music!

I'd love to read that!!!
Got to see him at a Christmas show.
His stories of life's incidents
Will crack you up.

He's like a slightly groovy bin man

Hello
@@rickwakeman8470 errr... no.... noo, not the real Rick Wakeman? naaa, ugh got my hopes up too high there. Oh well.
That raincoat looks like he's about to flash the audience, right? 😅
How much did he input into Bowie’s SFM albums?
This is how Billy Connolly started.
FABULOUS!!!
I envy this man’s wit!
He is virtuosic in all ways.
Brilliant
Great comedy routine
He should do some stand up routines. Very funny dude.
KILROY corbin was here [1952-present]
As good of a comedian as he is a musician... hilarious!
Last time I saw you, you weighed less than me!!
Way to not show the goods.
Talking to fast and kind of mumbled! Hard to understand! But still admire him and his piano playing!

'Morning Has Broken' made UK #9, so was nowhere near being number one. Some over the top embellishment from Rick there!
