- August 6, 2024. Sunny and 72 degrees. Beautiful day to paddle, push, lift, pull, drag, carry, wade a canoe down a gorgeous River. East Lake Rd to St Martin’s Bay (Lake Huron). Water levels a bit low, but that’s all part of the experience. Filmed with GoPro Hero 10 and iPhone 14pro. Sounds of hull scraping against firm objects sound worse than you think. “the canoe is a tool. Do you worry about scratching a hammer?”
What a coincidence finding your video. My wife and I had been in Houghton last August visiting my relatives and stopped off in St. Ignace on the way back home to Detroit. After dropping her off at the casino I went to the fishing pier on the Carp River and spent part of the afternoon fishing from the pier. I didn't catch anything but I didn't care because I just wanted to spend the day fishing and being outside. It was a gorgeous day, as you mentioned. It was the same day you paddled the river, August 7th. Serendipity. I met two locals who fished the river by walking down it from I-75, wearing only hip waders, so I knew the river wasn't very deep then. Nice video.
that's an absolutely perfect river. Thank you so much for this.
Burke, this is a fantastic video. I bet my canoe could make even more noise on that trip. That river is a mess. 😂 Thanks for sharing.
Love the "yeah...not gonna...." at 12:45
Just the right distance for a day trip.
Lovely. Thank you for sharing. Its funny how the composite boat is loud compared to the boat at the end.
Ha! At first I thought you and perhaps other company would be swearing in this video... come to find out it was your canoe that was cussin' the whole trip! LOL But seriously this is a great video
what you just showed is literally what I moved to Michigan for. Unfortunately, I got stuck in the lower peninsula and haven't been up north for more years than I'd prefer. The reality of Michigan in the LP is a miserable excrescence of post-industrial awfulness, but the beauty of the state is unparalleled as long as you're north of 57. I'm leaving this state the moment I can retire, but I will absolutely miss the north country.
The lower Peninsula has a lot of beautiful areas. Michigan is mostly rural. North of Highway 10 it starts to get really "up northy". Northwest Lower is some of the most beautiful country you'll find anywhere. The northeast isn't any slouch either. The Thumb also has some beautiful areas. If you're calling Southeast Michigan, the industrial armpit of Michigan, the "lower peninsula" you're not really speaking about most of it. The U.P. is a special place. It's like a different world when you cross the bridge but much of the lower is nicer than most of the rest of the country has to offer and we don't get hurricanes, earthquakes, and severe drought.
Good stuff! Thanks
I’d like to see this in late Sept or early Oct. should have tremendous colors and lots of Salmon moving upstream.
Been there… nice paddle👍
