Honestly, if possible, I really want Vietnam to buy China's Type 054A frigate. I'm not sure about a 'Corbettian' Navy for 'Cruiser Warfare', but I assume that *any hull below cruiser size would lack the Blue Water range and endurance to operate more independently* (severing maritime communications of freighters, tankers and transports). It will also include many pilot training simulators tied together to practice how to work in teams. The results of training will also be used to refine drone swarm tactics including determining which tactic to use under which evolving situation. Sophisticated computer algorithms can greatly improve swarm performance (and manned aircraft team performance). If the right process for deriving combat algorithms is developed, then the best tactics will be discovered, tested, proven, and practiced for complex scenarios with multiple drones, multiple aircraft, multiple surface ships, multiple ground radars multiple surface missile batteries, and multiple unknowns. It does have proximity rounds, as well as IR and laser guided ones. It was based mostly on French designs with Russian elements, both of which came with proximity fuses. Nowadays they come with improved chinese shells, so they must be equal to the modern French and Russian designs. FYI, proximity fuses first appeared in WW2.
China won’t catch up to US nuclear attack subs anytime soon. Hence to prepare for a possible Taiwan/SCS conflict it needs an underwater version of A2AD. It’ll likely consists of a high density of AIP and small nuclear attack subs, under water drones and sensors; surface ASW ships with Z20, aerial sensors (magneto, terahertz, lidar), air lunched, rocket propelled torpedos on long loitering drones. The 054B is faster, more capable but also more expensive. So 054AG makes more sense when a large number for near seas deployment is called for.
Your thinking process is literally 1D... Just because China's subs are not yet as capable as the Americans, doesn't mean China hasn't figured out ways to detect and attack American subs. They made significant breakthroughs in different ways to detect American subs, and, attack American subs. Any conflict closer to Taiwan, American subs would be doomed. Especially if the conflict happens 10/20 years from now. The US would be smart to start a conflict with China now, instead of waiting 10/20 years for China to become too strong lol
I think it could be sooner than we thought. The PLAN is developing the type 095 which should be close to Virginia/Seawolf performance and once they finalize the design and prove that it works, they will churn it out very quickly. But yea, the PLAN first mission is defending Chinese waters so they will saturate their coastlines with huge number of anti-sub assets of every kind. I doubt the USN can operate their subs with impunity near Chinese waters.

This is because more and more Chinese companies are expanding abroad, so it's necessary for the PLA to build military bases and naval bases across the globe to protect China's interests. So, in a few years, we should see China establish networks of military bases across the globe...
