China is certainly "churning them out"! A VERY interesting design, and the length of available centre-line flight deck would mean this could well be useful as a "mini-Carrier" of manned aircraft. These will be cheaper (and probably faster to build) that the Super-Carriers, and might well provide a complementary air-wing role, as well as amphibious landing capability. The PLAN seems to have ticked all the boxes with this one!

If China builds a 50,000 ton LHD, it makes sense to keep up with the Jones - namely US and Japanese assault carriers which can launch the F-35B. The 076's ability to launch J-35s will ensure air-superiority, allowing it to operate apart from the Liaoning/Shandong/Fujian and head up its own task force. Such an 076 will give PLAN unparalleled flexibility and regional hegemony whether we like it or not.

It's massive for an LHD. It's bigger than the CDG. Besides the American and Chinese carriers, only the Kuznetsov and two British carriers are larger. All actual aircraft carriers from other countries don't even come anywhere close to this LHD.

The "layer" above the hangar is the gallery deck which contains equipment such as the jet blast deflector mechanisms as well as catapult and arrestors. On helicopter carriers the gallery deck has other functions.
The "overhangs" that extend the deck beyond the hull sides are typically called sponsons. We often say that a carrier deck is "sponsoned out" to make it wider.
The sponsons have benefits internally as well. The QE class have full electric propulsion which means the gas turbines don't need to be on the prop shafts. Thus, the QE class houses their GTs in the sponsons themselves, which eliminates the need for a lot of internal ducting running deep in the hull for air intakes and exhaust.
Do we know if the 076 will have integrated electric propulsion?
Another reason a stern elevator is a bad idea if using cats and arrestors is because you will often have aircraft who land short coming down on the elevator, which is not as strong as the deck, and could damage the elevator mechanism.

    • @EurasiaNaval
      @EurasiaNaval  4 місяці тому +2

I don't think the overhang is the same as sponsons. Sponsons are platform extensions to install equipments like weapons and sensor turrets. The overhangs are there to support the flight deck, and will be under the part of the flight deck they support. They are separate things.

    • @lukedogwalker
      @lukedogwalker 4 місяці тому

@@EurasiaNaval ah, I see where you're coming from, but consider that the sponson is there to support the flight deck, because the flight deck is also a piece of equipment. Yes, sponson also refers to smaller, discrete structures that look like small additions (to hold weapons systems or sensors, as you describe). These we often called platforms. They look like you could cut them off without affecting the ship's structure.
In big ship terms (small commercial vessels define sponson differently) a sponson usually refers to a "deck extension" that contains useful volume. By this I mean that the part under the overhang isn't just flat (like you see on service vessels that have a helicopter pad mounted above the bridge). The part beneath slopes back towards the hull and has things like decks and equipment spaces inside it. Part of the definition is that it has equipment inside. US carriers have deck space inside the sponsons. The QE carriers have their GTs inside them on the port side, and the starboard side contains boat bays.
So, in big ship terms, the deck has an overhang and this overhang is supported by a sponson!

The PLAN is innovating like mad and it seems they are very confident about their EMALS technology to make it the center piece of their carriers beginning with Fujian. Aside from this 076 LHD, the guessing is that the next two super carriers will be nuclear and may be built simultaneously in two shipyards. If so, PLAN is coming n strong in this decade. It will also be interesting to see which nuclear reactor it chooses, a PWR as is used by the US, or a thorium MSR as currently being developed by China. BTW, there appears to be a mini-carrier being built and the assumption is that this will be a drone carrier.

Not to pick apart your comment, BUT the US Navy has 11 Nuclear Aircraft Carriers that can carry up to 80 plus aircraft carriers. China cannot even launch half of the sorties that the US Super-Carriers can. The reason we have the same old carriers, is because they are designed to last 50 years. The same old carriers jets carry far more weapons and fuel than Chinese carriers aircraft. Cheaper, Faster at a guaranteed higher quality.
Take a look at China's Tofu-dreg infrastructure. Faster = lower quality. Cheaper = Corruption. Look at how many Rotten-tail buildings China has. When the US Navy builds a ship, we get it right or we scrap it. EVERY TECHNOLOGY China uses was stolen from someone else. The world KNOWS that China does not R & D anything. CCP = Copy-Cut-Paste.
The type 076 is not even built. China said it is going to invade Taiwan by 2027. How is this brand new Type 076 going to be in Sea Trials by 2028?
How about explaining to your ignorant viewers, how China KNOWS all of this is going to work so flawlessly. Care to share how a TOTAL LACK of Experience trumps a country has built 81 aircraft carriers and ALL of them have been used in Wars. PLAN has never fought a war. Quality. What aircraft carrier that CHINA has built that it can point to and say to all of the countries in the world, TOP THAT!!!!!! Answer = It does not exist. If you want to then point to ANY ship in the PLAN and tell the world, NO ONE has built a better ship.

The requirement for two Electromagnetic Catapults (EM catapult or EMAL) ensures operational continuity in case of a single unit failure. This redundancy is particularly advantageous for deploying a large number of aircraft, especially with the KJ-600 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system.
When stacked this ship with the aircraft carriers CV-17 Shandong or CV-16 Liaoning, this configuration effectively adds two EMALs to the strike group, significantly enhancing its AEW&C launch capabilities.
This increased launch capacity has the potential to outperform current US strike groups in specific scenarios.

I watched an interesting news report from a year or so ago. Where the French carrier became the Center piece of an American carrier group because the US carrier returned home.
The officer interviewed said the Charles de Gaulle could take over for a Nimitz and keep up the same operational tempo.

    30 x fixed wing multi role aircraft. (J15 & J35)
    2 x AWACS (KJ600)
    6 x rotary wing

Assessment of PLA developments depends heavily on rumours, and to an extent this involves 'faith'. Faith in terms of which sources you trust, which alleged insider to follow and so on. Each failed prediction should reduce the credibility of a source, and each true prediction should increase it. It is on the balance of these credible rumours that the consensus of the Type 076 being a drone carrier primarily is reached. So, you are right that there's no hard evidence, but this is a higher-than-usual standard of proof in what we are dealing with.
But we'll see what happens. Some of the credible rumours regarding the Type 054B for example didn't turn out true, e.g. the universal UVLS and the 6,000-ton displacement (actual displacement seems closer to 5,000 ton).

What I see is a 50,000 ton flat top warship with and island starboard side and likely 2 catapults and aircraft elevators.

so what should carrier do? carriers are much better in carrying planes
and Chinese Marine corp is part of navy not something like us marine corp. if you need plane, just call jet fighters from carriers, LHD play key role in landing operation, any risk of damaging amphibious ability of a LHD is unacceptable.
drones are key part of landing operation because when landing on a well protected area equipped with PAC sam, large drones can play better role than jet fighters when using guided weapons such as jdam and can also operate more than 12 hours before landing which brings great benefit in reconnaissance mission.
if you need more jet fighter to get area control, simply just build more carriers, if 11 is not enough just build 26, if a 80000 ton carrier is not enough just build a 150000 ton one, why always try to just put more jet fighters on LHD.
in an landing operation, LHD tend to be only 50 miles away from enermy coastline, jet fighters will be spotted on lunched, us marine corp deploy F35 on LHD because they are not part of navy, they dont expect a immediate air support so they bought their own ones, but Chinese marine is part of navy, they can simply call carriers, marine should do their own things better, targeting on amphibious landing operation and coastal line fire support

It's more similar to French Charles de Gaulle, but it only has 1 catapult. It won't beat though a STOVL carrier with STOVL aircraft like Harriers or F-35Bs in terms of sortie rate. With how quickly STOVL aircraft can be launched and recovered, around 3 catapults are a must. It's only advantage it can launch J-35s which have more range than F-35Bs. But in a close quarter naval battle less than a 1000km wide against F-35Bs having only one catapult is a disadvantage. Best to use Type 076 to supplement Type 003 Fujian than operating independently. Even in amphib operations and CAS near shorelines like in the islands of South China Sea long range is not a necessity. They should have developed a STOVL J-35 as the advantages far outweighs the cons.

    • @EurasiaNaval
      @EurasiaNaval  4 місяці тому

I think your assessment assumes that the Type 076 is intended for the same missions as the Charles de Gaulle, the Queen Elizabeths and to a lesser extent the America class. That is to say as a light sea control ship. However, the airwing of the 076 serves a different purpose than the above carriers - to support an amphibious assault. Given that requirement, rotary wing assets and UCAV will play a greater role, and in comparison air superiority fighters like the J-35 a lesser role. So from that perspective, less catapult capability (or lack of STOVL capability) should not be as big of a drawback.

      You have some mis-conception here.
Firstly, Chinese military budget is about 2% of its GDP, while US is about 6~8% of GDP. So, US is spending much much more on war equipment than China, in fact, the total of next 9 countries combined.
US had 11 Super carriers, yet China only had one (other two were medium sizes carriers)
Secondly, the cheaper materials and laboure costs in China made it cost efficient to build new toys. If you bring exchange rate into consideration, the cost of one carrier in US, China can build two.
Thirdly, China done more than any country in the world to combat Global warming, they had highest % of EVs on their road, highest Solar Panel and Wind Turbine in use. (Hence the over capacity 😂)
Lastly, China had plant more trees and revert Deserts than any country in the world, again. Its easy to search on your own.
Maybe US should try to make peace with China at end of the day. 😆

I will continue to say as I said before China should not build more aircraft carriers.
Aircraft carriers are a waste of resources and are too vulnerable to today's missile, drone and underwater technologies and weapon system.
Aircraft carriers are today what battleships were in WWII.
    Obsolete.
Even the Philippines will be able to pose a unacceptable danger to these aircraft carriers with their BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles that they got from India..
And with air and underwater drone swarms, hypersonic missiles. They are too vulnerable and completely useless in today's modern day battlefield.
Look at what Ukraine is doing to Russia's black sea fleet.
Taiwan is far more technologically advanced than Ukraine.
If Ukraine can do that to Russia in the black Sea then Taiwan can also do that to China in the Taiwanese straight and the waters East of Taiwan.
China is making a fatal mistake by spending all these resources on these massive capital ships.
China should be spending these resources on building unmanned stealth submarines and long endurance armed drones.
China should also spend time on building up gazillions of unmanned air drones that can attack in mass swarms and in long distance.
The problem is that navies love big ships. The senior officers want to command these big ships. They think it gives them and their navy prestige.
Well prestige doesn't win you wars.
They are making a big terrible mistake.
The age of the aircraft carrier is gone just like the age of the battleship was gone drying WWII.
I say the same for the US navy.
    They have the same problem.
They keep building these huge Ford class ships that cost $13 Billion each when a single unmanned underwater drone that cost $10 000 to $50 000 packed with explosives cans send thar big boy to the bottom of the sea.
And guess what that Ford class aircraft carrier has absolutely zero defenses against that unmanned underwater drone.
    Absolutely none.
There is a very good chance it won't even see it coming.
The country sinking thar stuff doesn't even need to have a navy.
Imagine the damage the Houthi rebels would make in the red Sea if they had those.
Iran Has those, Hezbolla has them.
If You don't think that Taiwan and the Philippines will have those before the end of the decade, you are gravely mistaken.

Put some AI on those underwater drones and give them ability to work in swarms and let's see how you like that too.
Look at what the Ukrainians are doing to the Russian navy in the black sea.
You think the Taiwanese or the Filipinos can't do that to those PLAN aircraft carriers.
Everything I am saying right now is being discussed and brought up by military experts.
The nature of warfare is changing before our very eyes.
AI and Drones have changed the entire game.
Big capital ships can be sunk by by freaking cheap underwater drones.
      Aircraft carriers are obsolete.
The future belongs to the unmanned drones and to AI.
You combine that with underwater and air bond unmanned drones working in swarms with AI and you are dead.
You can't even jam today's drones cause they are programed and armed with AI.
You have no idea how much things have changed.
Then there is the cost component, even if you are able to intercept these drones the missiles to intercept the drones cost over $1 million to $1.5 Million a piece.
      The drones cost $50 000, $30 000, $20 000.
