Hello. I just stumbled across Melanie's channel tonight (7/14) and was just CAPTIVATED by her intense passion for quilting - and what an amazing teaching skills. Thanks Melanie! That was so helpful for me. I'm inspired now to make a quilt for my great-grandson. I'm so used to seeing your crochet videos that this caught me off guard. 😉 I love the simplicity of a basic patchwork quilt. Made plenty of mistakes but have learned and finished more than I imagined. The large pins I used left holes in the fabric that I hope isn't too noticeable, I now need a rotary cutter. Thank you Melanie.
Quilting has been upon my heart the past few months . My Gramma quilted . I'm so excited to learn this trade that seems to be not so common these days. Thank you. This was definitely informative. ❤️❤️
I sew mostly apparel and have always been interested in quilting. Interesting enough, in apparel, a walking foot is used for sewing knit fabric (those with stretch) so the layers don't stretch while sewing creating bubbling along the seams.
Hi Melanie! I'm making my first quilt using these tutorials~it has been EXTREMELY helpful! I'm so glad you included nesting and love how my quilt top turned out. I'm wondering if there's q reason why you're using the left side of your presser foot as a guide when doing your quilting instead of the usual right side. Thanks!
I just read that Melanie has passed and I am so sorry to hear that. She is a great teacher. I'm wondering if someone may be able to answer this quick question... When quilting, do you not sew the outside edges in full? I see that she went from top to bottom, left to right, but didn't complete the edging in full... I hope my question makes some bit of sense.
Hi Melanie! I am interested in learning how to quilt and I am so thankful I ran across your channel! Your instructions are concise and super easy to follow. Before I begin I need to purchase a another machine. I am looking at the Bernina 807 or 830 model from the late 70's. I don't want to spend a ton of money but I want a quality machine. Any thoughts? My second question is regarding the bobbin. While quilting do you ever run out of bobbin thread? If you do, how does this affect the quality of the quilt? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and keep up the great instructional videos!
Thanks Melanie. You are getting my confidence up for beginning my first quilt. I have an older Pfaff 6122 tiptronic from the late 1990's. . I don't see a walking foot for this model, but my regular sewing foot has the 1/4 " marking. Will this work ok? I am ready to start my first quilt.
So, if you want to use your backing as the "edge" for your quilt, you will want to cut the top and middle layers before you sew them to the backing (and keep the backing folded away after you've needled them together so you don't accidentally cut into it. Just a heads up from another newbie quilter.
Question on this step... my corners don’t all line up, and I think it’s because some of my squares were a tiny bit bigger than others, or my seam allowances were not consistent. So as I was adding all of the rows together, some corners line perfectly, but others are up to maybe 1/4 off. How would I do these basting rows, since at some point, I’ll be either on top of my original seam, or way off to the side. I hope that makes sense.
Great videos...the walking foot totally confused me when I first heard of it. I inherited my moms Pfaff and found out you don’t use a walking foot for this machine with the IDT system because of the dual feed system. Not that you probably needed to know that but a beginner using a pfaff might..
So hard! May be simple to some but, so hard for me. 🥺 I have made 4 small quilts and putting together the backing with the quilt top was not as easy as I thought it would be. I just put the right side’s together with batting on one side and sewed the sides together, Measurements were off and it was a mess.. I guess I’ll try this next time.
Thanks for tutorial. I had a lot of ugly waves when I went in one direction then back in the other direction. Going in the same direction worked much better for me

Great tutorial. Not confusing, easy to understand.
I still stitch by hand my uncle made my grandma a loom I use it always, beautiful quilt
Hi Melanie! I'm making my first quilt using these tutorials~it has been EXTREMELY helpful! I'm so glad you included nesting and love how my quilt top turned out. I'm wondering if there's q reason why you're using the left side of your presser foot as a guide when doing your quilting instead of the usual right side. Thanks!
Thank you for giving me the easy version to start quilting. Not so scary now!
So very helpful. Thank you Mel. Miss u. 💛
We love seeing people making their first quilt! Once you make one there's no going back!
your name is so good, i subscribed instantly
I'm so sad Melanie has passed on, I enjoyed her videos and it has giving me confidence to try quilting. Rest in peace!
I did the same...cut it all before quilting. Now I am off kilter a bit...hope it all works out. This is fun!
Thank you for sharing it.
Good luck and best wishes.
That quilt is really cute!! You make it look so easy
Can't wait to finish! Thank you so much for teaching💕
Thank you for posting this I had no idea where to start before but I do now.
Melanie Ham.. Thank you for your quilting video. I recently purchased a new sewing machine, so that I can start quilting. This has helped me alot
Aww! Sorry to hear this news, this is my first time on her video as I was searching for Quilting tutorials. She is the best teacher RIP LOVELY LADY🙏❤️
So, if you want to use your backing as the "edge" for your quilt, you will want to cut the top and middle layers before you sew them to the backing (and keep the backing folded away after you've needled them together so you don't accidentally cut into it. Just a heads up from another newbie quilter.
That's so pretty!! Can't wait to try this :-D
LOVE your videos. Good instructions. But I don't have that special foot for my sewing machine. Will that create a problem?
I’m wondering this too...
So excited to start quilting. You make it loo so easy
