Growing up, my mother would make this for Chinese NY. It's an expensive stew / braise with dried Chinese mushrooms that's cooked long & slow. The sea cucumbers become more tender or even jello-y the longer you cook them. Imagine the most unctuous beef short ribs or pork belly that just melts in your mouth - it's like that.
I loved it. A real childhood favorite. 40 years later, Mom still makes it occasionally.
Thanks mom.
one of my favourite dishes to eat at a Chinese restaurant -- so good!
This was interesting to me as an adult....but i confess, the 10 year old in me was giggling non stop.
Just wait till you see their "defense mechanism" 😮
Zefrank has a video 😏
@@KN-xl6lwso does Jackass’s wild boys 😂😂
At the 13:45 mark I definitely lost it 😂😂
Gotta say pause before every bite
Btw, the intestines of sea cucumbers you threw out is actually a Japanese delicacy! It's called a konowata and to prepare it is just simply washing it, removing whatever is in it (by _gently_ squeezing it out), and salting it before letting it sit for a bit.. It's quite rare since sea cucumbers tend to expel their guts as a defense mechanism.

Jocelyn: "it's a grower"
Me watching: *nearly spits out my food* 😂😂
Sea cucumbers are great. When i was in Japan, i used to get them at least once a week. Sashimi with a ponzu sauce or Daikon and kabosu + soy and shichi-mi sauce. It's like eating a mushroom but a lil bit crunchy. A fun fact for those who don't know, Sea cucumbers spill their guts as a defense mechanism and can regrow from those back in the ocean in some weeks.
the sequence starting at 5:00 was hilarious - for having never prepared it before and just giving it a go (with some unexpected moments) it turned out so well!
Reminded me of the deflated fugu from the Simpsons.
Wow. I watch alot of women getting Sea Cucumbers off the Sea floor at low tide and I wondered how they taste. My brother said "Why would you want to taste something that filters water?" I thought what in the waters doesn't filter or have water in and around it. I stuck it in my mind that whatever restaurant I go into that has Sea Cucumber on the menu I am going to try it. I've watched you and Joselyn cook and you two make food look delicious. I've tried a couple of your recipes and they were delicious. Now I will put Sea Cucumber on the top of my list. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Sea cucumber is more texture than flavour. It's oceany/briney but the appeal is the slippery, soft yet crunchy texture.
Just bought the kelp chili crisps yesterday at world Market. Was so happy to find them. Thank you they are amazing on soup dumplings
Funniest episode ever, how can you take sea cucumbers seriously 😂 recipe looked truely amazing 💜
Used to work at a small aquarium and sunflower stars were my fav. So soft and fast! Vicious predators and so curious.
Also, that third cucumber, the white stuff coming out of the mouth might have also been its mouth parts. If you google cucumbers eating, it’s really cool
This will always be one of my favorite channels, especially seeing how you guys are just enjoying life.
Fantastic video. Finally a great one on sea cucumber!
Thank you🤙
I would like to try that. The way you prepare the sea cucumber looks great. Cheers, Taku and Jocelyn! #TakuTuesday #👍🏻👍🏻✌️
I love your cooking style and one of the reason i love cooking and cant wait for your cook book.
Always a pleasure watching your vids. Would love to go adventuring with you again in the future! Safe travels to you and the lady!

So good. Love the beach cooking vids
you cant deny that you wanted to throw up when you tried a little bit of the sea cucumber.. HAHAH your face said it all 6:55
You had me really laughing on this one! Cleaning that sack of mush, then it gets worse. Really tender though..LOL!! Love the vids you make Man and thank you:)
I like the Limited Edition Kelp Chili Crip drop idea.. way to keep it moving forward. Thanks again for another good'n..
we really enjoy your videos Taku! Now im waiting to see the ones in mexico!
"It's a grower" had me chuckling.
Hey Taku... that Sea Cucumber roll looked uhhhmazing! Of course I have you Kelp Chili Crisp. Eating some on my tacos.. I'm on my 3rd jar, and it's so good! Thank you..
*#OutdoorChefLife* does it again. P.s. I'm really digging the chef's without a kitchen videos. Great idea 👨🍳
Tasty! Ty for the video!
This is a delicacy in the pacific islands, you can just eat them raw and esp the insides are really good but an acquired taste cause theyre acrid and has the texture of snot so we just eat it raw with lemon and a bit of soy sauce.
Even the meat is cut up into several bite size pieces and just eaten with lemon and soy sauce, maybe also some kimchi base. Ofc sea cucumber have some subvarients, so some are alot more harder to bite into to but really fresh.
Great video Taku!
Those are gnarly looking! But now I want to try it too
“Oh no, oh no!” Thats when you know shiet is bout to go down 😂
Yup I giggled thru the whole vid.😆looked delicious as usual Taku❤️🤘🏻
Take a metal sppon and a knife. Hit it with the spoon to tense it up, cut open with a knife and scrape out the guts with the spoon. Cut into thin slices and put it in ice water. Then all you need is a sauce and a cold beer.
Great video Taku
the 2nd one didn't have any guts inside probably because it used its defense mechanism which is to expel all its innards to freak out potential predators. they can regrow and replace all the internal organs after a while.
Hahahahaha this video was hilarious but damn it looks delicious the way you prepared it! We often see it dried and in braised dishes in Asia, it’s a delicacy esp during Chinese new year!
I lived in an island in the Philippines where we make ceviche out of sea cucumbers. It was the best.
This is something ive wanted to try for awhile
I was watching the Weather Channel on Sunday and saw you on the Uncharted Adventures show! Good luck Taku! I also dig Joclyn's adventurous energy to taste new and unusual foods! She is a trouper!
Never thought sea cucumber could look tasty… That looks so good. Next time I head up there Im for sure going to try
I love this channel so much.
I grew up eating these raw with some gochujang 😁
5:40..... 😂
I'm not much of a sea cucumber fan to eat, but since you have. 😊
i miss living in Juneau, that was our favorite beach to watch the auroras
i like sea cucumber stewed with chicken and mushrooms. it is how i grew up eating it. they are usually dried then you rehydrate them. (the way my mom used to make it)
I’ve been WAITING for someone to try sea cucumbers!!
That looked so good
love learning about the ocean...🤩🤩🤩
Did she really just say, "It's a grower."?
When she said “he’s a grower” I new we were in for a ride 😂
"It's a grower!" 😂
Super cool. I would have never expected them to be so full of meat!
Unfortunately I am one of those people that cannot dive below 15-20 feet. It's not that I can't hold my breath. It's that my ear drums are close to breaking. I just cannot do it. I have been told by many divers that sometimes there are people that can't get beyond that depth and to just not do it. You don't want your ears to sustain injury. I can do 20 feet max.
Yup! Me too. I hit 10 or 12 feet and my head feels like it's exploding. I've tried every decompression . I had to edit this 3 times. Dang autocorrect.
I feel you! I can't really get passed 30ft because of the same issue.
I swim good enough not to drown in a pool. For the lifeguard merit badge. I had trouble free diving to 12 ft to bring that brick to the surface.
I've never seen sea cucumber on a menu. If I ever do I'll try it.
Aloha. You would amazed at how much you can harvest in that depth.
'Its a grower' HAHA. made me laugh
It reminds me of the time when you guys caught squid and ate it on the boat with just soysauce and lemon juice. One of my favorite episode.
Chili nice touch
14:36 what was bro doing 🤣
Your videos are as interesting as documentaries 🫶🏾
the way you had prepared the sea cucumber with the soy sauce, lemon, lime, and the spice of the chili kelp. it reminded me of the exact way you make keleguin (its a chamorro dish).
Chamorros took that from Filipinos(Kinilaw). One of my faves.
“It’s a grower” 😂😂
"Its a grower " she knows wassup 😂
Gonna try w the big sea cucumbers here 🤣
Can’t wait for the mexico vids man!!!
"you better not be rubbing your cuc in the sand in there!" - mom
Most Impressive!! You Crazy Freak! I mean that with utmost respect! Great post.
Maaan...leave them aliens alone. They come in peace! lol
"this is how im gonna clean this" proceeds to rub dirt into sea cucumber. love the channel, cheers!
The sea cucumber, aka nature's condom! LOL
14:30 XD
Taku why'd you cut the clip of you rinsing it off? Lmaoooooo good video bro as always
13:47 AAYYOOO 😂
🌴. Batter and fry those sea worms 😆👍🏼👊🏼
😂 First experiences can throw a curve ball , I've never eaten them either. Maybe like a tako poke prep?
you ever see the chinese fishermen that cooks a shit ton of seafood in a wok he just throws the seacucumbers in the wok with soysauce and eats them whole lmao
shoutout to barnacle foods, their stuff is so good!
I am a tiny island with a sea cucumber 😂
Sea cucumber are expensive af! 💰
Chef Wang Gang got a good sea cucumber episode 🍽
His was dried tho the process is crazy🥒
Make kelp sesame seed mix thingy yall used.
I did find it at a world market and tried it. Its actually good.
We use lime juice or lemon juice hot pepper or kimchee base onions garlic
it looks like it would be good fried onj a pan
👍🏽 Nice videos. Ever consider trying a different camera? So much color in the environment you record in. The sony AF is great, but other camera would give richer color, examples: Nikon Z , panasonic, fujifilm
@outdoorcheflife how far away is your cookbook? We haven't seen an update in months
if you take one of those dry wall scrappers, split the seacuc in half and then scrape out that white meat, you let those pieces soak in lemon water while you scrape a couple dozen of them. you make a beer batter mix and fry em like you would clam strips. good stuff. and if you gave them to someone who didn't know they'd think they were clams.
Aloha. That’s how my captain showed me.
Dried then braised is the way to go :D
Kelp Chili Crisp is amazing! Need to sell it in bigger jars! If you haven't tried it make sure to get a jar... Seriously amazing! Use it on everything!
Yea Boy
Kodiak Alaska? Looks beautiful!

No sea cucumbers were harmed in the making of this video 😂
We on vancouver island we eat them all the time

My deal looked like that after a few ill advised nights in Bangkok.
You can have mine!
How about namasu style?
I love your channel but it’s sad I can’t try most of the food because I’m allergic to shellfish.
