The Verve’s Richard Ashcroft, who wrote the 1997 hit, was denied royalties for two decades because it sampled a Rolling Stones, Jagger-Richards composition. Gives the title of the song “Bitter Sweet Symphony” a whole different level of meaning.
The strings were sampled without permission from an orchestral version of The Last Time by The Rolling Stones. This is probably The Verve’s biggest hit and they initially didn’t see a penny from it, it all went to Mick and Keef who relinquished the royalties back to The Verve a couple of years ago. This is basically a hip hop track, the way it was formed around a sample loop.
This song is still epic after 2 decades ! The whole album is a masterpiece and love playing it on vinyl !! So much memories !! Not a blind review I guess but still great Dave! We will suggest some more
This whole album from start to finish is perfect! Lead singer Richard Ashcroft is a master song writer, definitely should dive into him and the verve some more (Sorry if you get a string of notifications, just getting round to checking out Daces back catalog 😂)
It was the stones ex manager who brought the case against the verve asking for 100% royalties. The stones signed it back to the verve as soon as they could. Also I think the stones sampled a musical track themselves.
They have a lot of good songs. The Rolling People, weeping willow, lucky man, life's an ocean, etc. I discovered The Verve thanks to this song, but once I heard their catalogue, I used to skip Bittersweet as is the only one people talk about. On their reunion tour, where this video is from, they didn't end with Bittersweet Symphony. In fact they merged it with 'Love is noise' song and then the show ends.
Thank You samechick Love this song :) Also, they have a real guy playing violin on stage usually... I think they broke up a few times. I have this CD and it had a few good songs on it. Had no clue about the Stones tho thanx Dave!
They didn’t bother the whole song they had borrowed a sample of the song, which was only a B-side and a minor album track in The Rolling Stones screwed them over
Not that you'd care but 'cast no shadow' by Oasis is apparently about Ricardo! Ps again not sure if Dave cares but how did the logo of the now famous 'The Beatles' appear on Ringo's drum set?
Check out him singing the song on the 'Jools Holland' show. The show is by far the best here and Jools is respected for his music, but also the fact that he has music from every corner and taste. You should watch some and tell me if there's another show like it....much love x
We've done some reactions from the Jools Holland show! Excellent show with great sound. Back in the day Dave used to watch a show that was on so very briefly called Night Music. The recent Dr John video he reacted to was from that show.
Dig the string arrangement. I remember the tune. Here's a good one from the most recent release of the classic band, Kansas that Dave should like reacting to: "The Song The River Sang" ua-cam.com/video/gGghQnT0oaE/v-deo.html
Ooh i love a bit of verve, some songs worthy of a reaction by them are lucky man, drugs dont work and sonnet, although the whole urban hymns album is good.
Most of the support they got from the fans because the fans knew that the Rolling Stones had screwed them over, everybody was well aware how that destroyed this band, for a decade or more
I’m sure you’ve got the request already but Muse just played a new song from the new album that hasn’t been released yet. It was absolutely amazing. It’s a live version that isn’t the best quality but it’s still amazing. Check it out!! It’s called “Killed or be killed” what a song. 🤙🫡
I have heard that there's a song that came out and I'm on the fence about putting it in front of Dave because of the quality issues. Any word on an official release? Or just when the album drops in August? I really hate being on the fence!
The whole album that this song is from is absolutely perfect, start to finish

Keith Richards has sorted that now. About time!

From the album Urban Hymns 1997.
Richard Ashcroft is the singer.
Dave might like Kasabian - Fire ??
I've seen them live, they are excellent
This whole album from start to finish is perfect!

Blistering performance, Richard Ashcroft's voice is so powerful on this track
Enjoyed this song very much. Loved the synths or the strings throughout. A true anthem. ✌️

The song appears on the film Cruel Intentions.

I saw them at Haigh Hall, Wigan at their last gig it was fantastic!

Manx. To American's is Manchester his accent. Actually from Wigan Manchester
This song 🤯

Nick McCabe, man. What a guitarist.
From Wigan Manchester
This was not written by the stones just a sample was taken, which the stones stole from somewhere else. Lyrics by RA
Not sure how the request system works but can I recommend Covenant or Ultravox. Both terrific live acts.
Richard Ashcoft and Brian wilson duo 'check the meaning'

Can you share a link to this one?
The Verve performing Life's An Ocean on Later With Jools Holland is definitely worth checking out. Never get tired of listening to it
The verve history don't need to say anymore think Jesus's is jealous he didn't write it
Probably my favourite song of theirs.

This was the last time.
8:35 wikipedia wouldn't lie?
Ooh i love a bit of verve, some songs worthy of a reaction by them are lucky man, drugs dont work and sonnet, although the whole urban hymns album is good.
They have a keyboard player
Listen to Drugs Don't Work or Sonnet by The Verve next 👍
Most of the support they got from the fans because the fans knew that the Rolling Stones had screwed them over, everybody was well aware how that destroyed this band, for a decade or more
They never bored this song from the stones, you are 100% incorrect
The Verve 'Life's An Ocean' on Jools Holland is one of the best performances of any song ever. You'll love it. Trust me. Miles better than this.
This song is the only good thing England did in the 21st century
This is the band oasis copied, they from Manchester in the north-west of England
1997

@@samechick ya, not sure. But I will say the audio is still really good quality in the live versions I’ve seen. Still might be worth it 🤷🏼♂️
Hi there Crypto! Here is Dave's reaction to Kill Or Be Killed ua-cam.com/video/EBh04weR1ak/v-deo.html Thanks for the suggestion!
