  • This is my attempt to give back to the UA-cam community. When I went to work on our new car, I found no one had done a video on how to do a newer Mini. Our Dealer gave us a price of about $400.00 to do the front brakes, I thought it was time to break the new car stigma and do it myself. I am not a professional, but I have done dozens of brake jobs. How hard could this be? It was not too bad. After you watch this, I think you will be able to do it.
    Please let me know if this has helpful.

    Super job on this.
    Reset "Brake" service reminder with motor off, ignition switch on, door shut and parking brake off. (If parking brake is on, reset unsuccessful comes up. Push small black button at speedometer in and hold. Bring up reset possible, let go, push again again and hold to bring up "reset?". Let go. Push and hold, reset starts. You can hold the button in until reset is done. The brake sensor is just one loop wire in plastic. When the pad wears enough it rubs away the plastic and the wire inside. The loop is broken and the brake service light comes on.

    Thank you, very informative n detailed. Your background sounds like I’m playing donkey Kong (from the Atari days)! 😂

    Just did this on my wife's Clubman S- great video! Nice job getting all of the different angles considering how small it is in that wheel well. I used Akebono Euro pads which come with the sensor and brake grease. It resulted in a softer pedal feel but the ceramic pads should produce less dust than OEM.

    Very nice video, a couple of comments.
    1. Anti seize should never be used on lug nuts as the torque specs are based on dry lug nuts. So, you could stretch and snap the lug nut when torqueing. 2. The rotors have to be measured to determine if they are within Mini's wear limit. If not, they have to be replaced, as the stopping distance is increased due to poorer heat dissipation due to the thinner metal. Regards!

    My pad depth is low and I can change pads. My concern is the wear sensor. Mine hasn’t tripped so I could try and reuse them. Mini have made it impossible to do any work yourself. A fault will come up that they charge you to reset. Hate it. Any work arounds? Can I re use the same sensor with new pads if it’s not current broken?

  • @698rocky

    You can reuse the sensor if it is not worn through

    Thanks for the Vid, very helpful. How did/do you like those Cinturato tires and how many miles did you get out of them? I ended up replacing the Bridgestone RFs that came on mine with regular tires and bought a full size spare/scissor jack.

    Just wanted to reach out and send you a big thank you. I did the brakes on my wife's 2018 countryman S and it was exactly the same as the video.
    I do have one question. Did the notice for brake go away on its own or did you use a scanner. If you used a scanned which one has worked for you?
    Again thank you very much very simple

    Great video....thanks, but yes the music was really annoying. Why do people always feel the need to add background music while they are talking? Could you imagine that while you were watching a movie?

    Is the sensor supposed to snap in? Which side goes towards the pad?

  • @698rocky
    @698rocky  6 років тому +1

    I have never ground my rotors, I try to catch it before the pads hit the rotors. If the rotors look bad, I buy new ones on Rock Auto

      the rotors on the F54 are usually too thin to have machined for multiple brake jobs. on my 2016 F54 I got Slotted/drilled rotors, ceramic pads and wear sensor for $108

    Is there a sensor on both sides, or just one?

    • @698rocky
      @698rocky  Рік тому

      Each side has one sensor. And what is interesting is that if you think about it, there are 4 front pads and 4 rear pads. since there is only one sensor you have a 1 in four chance of that being the pad that wears the most. I just did the brakes on the mini and the sensor-less pads were the worn ones...so do not rely on the sensors, and try to catch it before you blow out a sensor. And save the good pads you remove, just in case.

    If you have an electric handbrake make sure that is off when you reset the brake check light

    • @whip-its_dad4239

      Mr.Parsons my light came on so I replaced the pads on my front rotors then I tried resetting the warning light with the handbrake on . It kept saying reset failed till I read your comment I tried it with the handbrake off and it worked ! Thank you so much . My Mini Countryman is a 2017 S model with 43,059 miles and I didnt turn the rotors as there was no noticeable ridge . My book said lug nut torque is 103 ft lbs also .

    How many miles were on the car when brakes went bad. My brakes only have 17K and there bad

    • @EmperorDM
      @EmperorDM 4 роки тому

      My brakes were bad in roughly the same amount of miles. Dealer told me it was “performance brakes” and they won’t last long. Also tried to charge me for a $1600 brake job. I said nope to both and have taken it into my own hands.

    Do you have to always replace sensors?

    • @scottb2830
      @scottb2830 4 роки тому

      It is best to always replace the sensors when replacing the brake pads. Also, on the F54, replacing the rotors is recommended

    • @xstorm_8_shadowx
      @xstorm_8_shadowx 4 роки тому

      Scott B Technically if the sensor doesn’t rub against the rotors the sensor won’t wear down and go bad.... answer is no but they are really cheap to replace.
