Although it’s a few years since I last drove a tractor with a baler on the back, that sound of the ram and the click of the bale sledge is so evocative and brings back many happy memories. I had an MF 124 baler which lasted me 35 years and was still going strong when I sold it.

I couldn’t have described that better myself Bill and I’m pleased the video has evoked those happy memories of your past. Fantastic balers the MF 124 and judging by the sound of it yours was very well maintained over those 35 years. Great comment Bill and good to hear from you. Cheers, David.

Good evening David, and this is just what I needed today to give me a lift. What a wonderful sight to see all of these great combinations working away making hay the way it was always made, (well in our era anyway). Regarding the black and white footage blending into the colour, well you know where I stand on that one, and have to say you really did it justice with great filming and editing David. Fantastic to see the MF 3070 with the MF 224 baler, and the beautiful International 885XL with the IH 445 baler with correct matching combinations. At one time, farmers we very brand loyal always matching field equipment with tractors by brand, but I suppose there was less choice in those days. Hard to say which of the combinations I loved the most, but have to say the International 885XL and IH 445 baler really looked and sounded outstanding. However the high light for me was that good old International 475, even with the fear stories from my past I told you about before. Hope you are well and coping with this poor weather just now, lots of snow and ice up here. Thanks as always. Cheers, Fraser.

A good evening to you too Fraser, hope you are well and I’m pleased the video has given you a lift and brought back a bit of summer to these now long, dark winter nights! Yes traditional haymaking is definitely from our era (a pair of old fogeys if ever there was one!) but still great to see and pleasing to see the old tradition being carried on. I’m pleased you liked the black and white merging into colour and actually it was you that planted the idea into my head re. your comment on the classic MF baling video from earlier this year (no royalties though, Christmas is fast approaching so money is a bit tight 🤣 However I thought I would try it and I’m pleased it came out well and thanks for the suggestion and compliments. They’re all lovely outfits, beautifully kept and as you say farmers were very loyal to their brands and local dealers back then, maybe not as much now though as sadly a few of the smaller local dealers are disappearing especially in this area and the emphasis is more on who can supply a 200hp tractor at the best price! I’m with you on the International 475 though, a beautiful old girl, hard to believe she’s 46 years young and an absolute credit to the owners and yes I well remember your escapades from your youthful days! 🤣 No snow here but been a chilly week, -7 degrees at work this morning but I’m tough skinned and would rather have a frost than wet weather during my 12 hour shift at the grindstone! Thank you too my friend, another dose of the past summer in a couple of weeks time. Take care Fraser, cheers David.

@@davidwinthrop7077 Well I have to agree David re the "a pair of old fogeys" comment as that age number keeps going the wrong way 😂. You did surprise me though regarding the lack of royalties, as it's well known that us Scots are very tight, but thought as a fine Cumbrian lad you would have been a more generous type of lad, but guess I was wrong 🤣🤣. Have a good weekend. Cheers, Fraser

Many thanks Dave. Yes it was a very poor summer for haymaking and I was surprised I managed to get any footage at all. The owners of the International outfit who farm in the fells were worried that they wouldn’t even get a round bale silage crop and then after weeks of rain the last week of July they and their neighbours managed to get both. A terrible summer really so hopefully 2025 will be a better one and you manage to get your hay crop too (would love to film that!) Cheers, David.

It’s a Massey 224 baler Seamus so very similar to a 124, just a couple of years younger but still an 1980s machine. A great machine and sounds like you’ve got some great memories of haymaking time with your dad. Pleased you enjoyed the video and it’s evoked those summers of your past. Cheers, David
