    I have a friend who came to the United States after growing up in Vietnam. He did not speak English all that well and was not interested in the kinds of things he was seeing on television (especially for his young children), so I lent him my Andy Griffith DVDs, and he was absolutely hooked. He loves Barney and all the characters, and he watches the episodes over and over. It always bothers me when I see countdowns of the best sitcoms in history and this show it not at the top of the list (and sometimes not in the top ten). It has endured for decades; it is universal and timeless in its humor and good nature, and unfortunately, we will probably never see another show like it.

    Mayor Pike - really only because those first seasons of TAGS were the most classic. The actor also appeared in It's A Wonderful Life -- sitting on the front porch of a nearby house while George Bailey is hanging out with Mary after the high school graduation party where they ended up in the pool. He urges George to kiss Mary, then grumbles that youth is wasted on the wrong people!

    As a little kid I knew this was wrong at 4 or 5 . But my gramps was the sheriff of a low population county in the land of ice and snow . But he was much like Andy Taylor. Except gramps had grandma and 4 kids and he carried a gun.
    A jail inmates parents came to visit their son who was serving a jail sentence. Gramps told them they could wait or comeback in a couple hours because he sent their son to the movies with my 6 year old uncle.
    Inmates ate their meals in the family dining room with the family. Grandma was a legendary cook.
    I recently checked .gramps had (1) deputy and a part time jailer. Today the county has less than 1/2 as when gramps and the deputy handled things today there in the sheriff and 6 deputies. For half the people. Smh

    Andy Griffith had apparently made it clear early on that he only planned to do the show for his five year contract and no more. He continued to say this going into the fifth season so naturally everyone was thinking about what they would do after the show ended. Then Andy changed his mind and decided to renew his contract for three more years. But by then Don Knotts had obtained a three-picture movie deal with Universal and he didn't want to pass up that opportunity so he left the show after the fifth season. Some accounts claim that he had already signed the contract with Universal and couldn't get out of it, but apparently that wasn't the case as the deal had not yet been finalized. But he felt that this was the best route for his career. He and Griffith remained friends and Knotts made guest appearances on the show several times over the next three years, with his character Barney Fife now working as a detective in Raleigh.

    • @trawlins396

      He should've stayed on the show. His "movie career" didn't exactly set Hollywood on fire.

    • @StevePemberton2
      @StevePemberton2 Рік тому

      @@trawlins396 Really? Don Knotts wound up making five movies for Universal, all of them made money as far as I know, except for maybe The Love God. He then had a big hit with Tim Conway in the Disney film The Apple Dumpling Gang, which included a sequel. In later years Knotts kept busy in smaller parts in film and television, eventually ending up in a significant co-starring role in the hit TV show Three’s Company. So you think after all of that Knotts was kicking himself for not staying three more years on The Andy Griffith Show?

      @trawlins396 Рік тому

      @@StevePemberton2 his role on Threes Company is probably what brought him the most notoriety AFTER Andy Griffith show. Personally I don't remember any of his movies. • @Spillers72

    Andy was totally right, a city mayor has zero authority over a county sheriff. The sheriff would arguably have some authority over him. The county board of supervisors have virtually no authority over a sheriff, who is independent and has a great deal of power. Even a county judge or federal officials often have to get the sheriff's approval to do certain things. For example, a judge cant order work release for county prisoner. He can recommend it, but the sheriff has the final say over his jail. The FBI has to have the approval of the sheriff to make arrests and conduct investigations within a county. Congress doesnt even have the power to mandate background checks for gun sales be conducted by the sheriffs office.

    A few things that involved the city only perhaps should have had input from the mayor like whether the band goes to the capital. A lot of the stuff that happened was all in Mayberry and didn't involve having to go elsewhere in the county. They kept all the crime in the city but when there was a possibility of impeachment the county came in. But basically all the crime was in the city. Stoner was a pain especially when Andy figured out the cow thief put shoes on the cow.

    But mayor Stoner was hilarious many times when he got drunk from the spring water that had been spiked and the very first episode where he caused the moonshiner to climb the tree. I still adore that show and watch it everyday at least once.

I remember his role in the Jimmy Stewart Christmas movie, "Its a Wonderful Life" where he played the mean version of "Nick" the bartender (not the nice Nick from Martini's). That was after George Bailey wished he didn't exist and wound up with Clarence (his guardian angel) at Nick's instead of Martini's.

    I can imagine a mayor and a sheriff having lots of interaction and their being lots of interference from the mayor when the county seat is too small to have its own police department. But both are elected officials in North Carolina and are independent power centers from one another. In my county in Georgia there is an antagonistic relationship between the county sheriff and the chair of the county commission which is the county equivalent to a mayor.

    I remember PARLEY BAER's name from movie credits more than I remember him though when I see him in a show he looks pretty familiar. I always got a charge out of DICK ELLIOTT, the roles he played seemed so right for him and he had kind of a wheezy voice that made him stand out. However, I did not know his name until I watched an old CHARLIE CHAN movie this year where MR ELLIOTT played a bad guy. It bothered me that I had seen him a million times but never knew his name so I used the computer to get the cast of the movie and there he was. To me, it is character actors like him that really help make a movie into an enjoyable event. I note that CLINT EASTWOOD understands this quite well from his movies.

He was the guy in Bedford Falls who horned in on "George" and "Mary" growling "Well ain't Ya gonna kiss Her?"😂🤣😂😘🎥B.W.
