  • A ball is thrown horizontally from the top of a 60.0-m building and lands 100.0 m from the base of the building. Ignore air resistance. (a) How long is the ball in the air?     The sign you use for answer C is dependent on what you define your coordinate system as. If you define up as positive, than your answer would have a negative sign in this case.

    For C could Vo = Vo + at also be used to figure it out? Is there any specific reasoning to using the equation you did?

    2(9.8)(60)= 1176 not 1180. Why is it round up?

      For the simplicity of the video, some intermediate answers have been rounded but keep in mind, on a test or quiz it is best to only round at the final answer. Hopefully this helps!

    How come you round the numbers before you get the answer? I have been told to keep my answers unrounded till the very end.

      Hi Gabi! Abiding by Significant Figures are very teacher/professor specific. Some professors/teachers don't care about them, but others are super strict and they only want you to round at the end. Me personally, I don't care about sig figs 😂 so I will sometimes round to make the numbers easier to work with. You should just make sure what your professor/teacher wants and abide by their rules regarding it. Generally, significant figures do apply only to the final answer. Hopefully this helps!

    Would it not be easier on part c to just use the first equation for it since it uses initial, final, acceleration, and time?

      At 8:00 I explain why I prefer to use Equation #4. At this point in the problem, you can choose either Equation #4 or #1. Regardless of which equation you use, both methods require only one step since only one equation needs to be used. You reduce the likelihood of error by using Equation #4. Cheers!

    Is letter D not in component form? I have my professors answer is something with x and y hats with 28.6x^-34.4y^=v^ and im confused

      Hi Ian - The answer to D in the video is the total Resultant (Hypotenuse) of the components (x and y). The hats you are talking about are just Physics notation to say that the value you're describing is a VECTOR. If you want to leave it in component form, you do not have to perform the math to find the overall resultant but just state the components of the resultant vector. The 28.6 is the x-component (x hat) and the y-component is -34.4 (y hat). For this video I stated that the x-component was 28.7 but this is just a difference in rounding. Hopefully this helps!

      -9.8 m/(s/s) is the acceleration of gravity. You could also do +9.80 m/(s/s) and +60m

      @@Wojtekoa yes because the final velocity in the Y axis was going downwards which makes it negative, I think he mentioned it I just wasnt paying attention
