Cor, well done Cara 🙂 Lots of memories there. Spent the summer of 1995 working on it. We took all the windows out, sent them off to be repaired and sent the glazing bars to the blacksmith to be tipped with phosphor bronze to prevent any further rust spalling of the masonry. The windows had been pointed in with cement mortar so they were hard to remove without breaking the medieval glass. We did extensive mortar repairs to the exterior and rendered parts of the building by harling - throwing the lime mortar on with trowels like dustpans and then beating it back to expose the aggregate before limewashing over it. I remember rendering the wall at 4.15 yet it looks ancient now. They went on about how old the font was but in the pile of herbage in the corner of the churchyard @3.17 there are the parts of the original font which no one seemed interested in. The summer I was there was a hot dry one and you could see the outlines of the old houses. We found a small tin in the wall of the chancel with a silver sixpence (think it was dated 1916?) and a picture of the people working on the church. I pointed a cigarette packet into the chancel wall with 2p and my card with the names of the team working on it. I'd better stop there as I could go on for pages 😁 Thanks for taking the time to do the video 😊😊🌵🌵
I loved reading about your time there, thank you so so much for pointing this church out. wonder what happened to the photo, and ohhh i wonder how long it would be before someone finds your Cigarette packet. Perhaps someone way in the futures finds this video cos they were searching about the church and the mystery fag packet. You just never know :-) It truly is stunning church, my favourite so far 😊
@@openmindedwonderer Aww, ta Cara 😊 I'll try to find out but I've lost touch with people now. Probably won't be found for a few hundred years but you never know. I left a time capsule in Merriott Post Office too. Good to see the church again, it's a long way from where I am now so I don't know if I'll ever get back there?
What a gem of a place, so beautiful my friend, and you covered it perfectly. Many thanks for a terrific tour.... Sending my warmest greetings from Guangzhou via Denmark.... Thomas
So glad William Morris & his society managed to keep the Church as it was without any ‘restoration’ Your description was so apt & enjoyable. I actually felt I was there! Box pews are rare and it was lovely to see them still in situ. They would have been removed by the Victorians. Thanks so much for visiting & thanks to Ziggy for suggesting it!
It was odd, when Ziggy mentioned it, I was due to be in the area the next day. So popped it without knowing a lot about the place. So I didn’t know what to expected and oh I did I love it there.
What an interesting place for a beautiful church like this. It was captivating to learn of the society and the restoration. As usual, wonderful narrative, music and footage. It all goes together beautifully for the tour. The carving of the mother and child is quite something. Thank you for sharing ⛪👍👍

Hi Cara, thank you for showing us around this amazing hidden gem of a church! Truly stunning. How fortunate that William Morris campaigned to save this wonderful building. The wall paintings and carvings were fantastic. So much to discover. Brilliant video! 👍😊
