- A television experiment. Cartoonist Chris Ware teams up with his animator, John Kuramoto, to make a cartoon version of a true story. Jeff Potter tells the story to host Ira Glass: about an art project, a bunch of first-graders, and how being behind the camera can rob you of your humanity even if the camera's not real. Chris and John supply the visuals.
Thanks for the reminder that viewing requires responsibility to act upon what we see and know. Observing is not the end of the story.
Chris Ware and This American Life? This is relevant to my hipster interests.
This is a good reminder for us producers
Great vid, It reminds me of all this Reality Shows where people are fighting and they just let the fight happen for a while...unless somebody gets seriously injure and then you see the staff coming in.
wow, never thought a cartoon could be so deep. It's true, nowadays it's all about trying to film everything, we no longer take actions to it...
maybe instead of "lost our humanity" maybe we've just been exposed to more of it.
Love it. Great story.
I don't think you can blame this wholly on the fake camera. Sure, they make it seem a lot more extreme, but this is actually a common occurrence -- a phenomenon known as "diffusion of responsibility." This kind of thing happens all the time with people without cameras in their hands. The fact that this was a bunch of 5th and 6th graders makes this even more true.
i love the "TOTALLY 100% TREND" animation
Nicely done!
Recently, I went to see a band play. Though the crowd liked the band, I was the only one dancing. The others were too busy texting, tweeting, filming or taking pictures of the group.
I think our generation has stopped experiencing life. We're too busy reporting it.
