- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1991 golf game for the NES, NES Open Tournament Golf.
With a new entry in the Mario Golf series due to arrive on the Switch later this month, I thought it would be fun to take a look back one of Mario's first official forays into the sport.
NES Open Tournament Golf, it could be argued, marks the beginning of what we now refer to as the "Mario Golf" series. It was created by Nintendo's R&D2 team and HAL, and it is clear that the teams had learned a great deal from their previous efforts in the genre, which included Golf and the two Japan-only "Family Computer Golf" games, Japan Course and US Course.
So, while it wasn't made by Camelot, Camelot clearly drew quite a bit from this foundation.
The game stands without peer on the 8-bit consoles, and it outclasses pretty much every 16-bit golf game, as well. The convincing physics, brisk pacing, the streamlined interface, and the snappy controls made the game accessible to anyone without sacrificing the depth that golf fans would be looking for. The structure provided by the endgame goal (win $1,000,000 to see the ending and credit sequence), the several available game modes, and the battery-backed save feature all give it some real lasting power. And finally, the colorful cast of characters, the excellent graphics, and the memorable soundtrack all give it a personality that makes it fun to come back to again and again.
Considering its overall quality, I suppose that it's hardly a surprise that Iwata was the project's lead programmer, huh?
I think it would be fair to say that NES Open was king of the console golf castle, and nothing else could touch it. At least, not until Neo Turf Masters came along.
Best of all, this classic still holds up today. It feels just as intuitive and as polished now as it did thirty years ago. If you have a Switch, check it out on the NES app!
Just try not to let Mario's neon patriotic attire blind you.
(Is that Ken Williams handing out the prize money?)

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
This was one of the first sports games to ever star Mario, and it's still one of the most fun golf games I've ever played.
Birdie is the Awesome score
I prefer *_"Mario Golf"_* (N64) over this. But, this is still a great golf game for the NES. And probably the *BEST* golf game for the system.
@@Dorian_Scott Thanks for mentioning the N64 game, I honestly had no idea it existed. I was well aware of Mario Tennis, but not Mario Golf. Mind blown. 😯
@@jonathanturbide2232 Oh yeah, I *loved* the N64 *_Mario Golf_* as a kid. I actually preferred it to Tennis.
your a ledgit legend thank you once again another amazing vid..... legend...
Ten hours of eight bit golf? I truly admire your dedication to this amazing channel.
Tyvm :)
At the time Mario was both a pro golfer and a boxing referee, what a career this man had.
Don't forget he was also a plumber, a baseball ump, a tennis ref, a carpenter, and a race car driver!
@@NintendoComplete who knew that Mario has a lot of talents
You wonder how much he hustled Bowser for on the links, or if those twins were hired by Peach because of their resemblance.
He was a doctor at this time too
@@NintendoComplete Man, Mario is the Phil Collins of video game characters. He's everywhere, even on side projects.
I purchased a loose cartridge of this game for $5 at a random Game shop in Kentucky. Worth every penny! My friend's little kids from Indiana LOVE watching Mario and Luigi in it whenever they come to visit me! Her ADORBS one-year-old baby smiles at the colorful graphics of the sky and grass. :) Who knew a 30-year-old Golf Game for the NES could light up a smile of wonder from a child's face in 2021, especially from one made the year their own mother was born? (This proud nerd did!) This is why 8-Bit games should live on. The simple stories, imagination from limited graphics, and an shockingly fun experience (if the game doesn't stink)! Give me an old game any day over the PS4 or 5! Not that Sony's consoles are bad (they're technical masterpieces), but the majority of their game experience is too complex to be entertaining (unless it's a racing game). Coroporations, aside from the always-delivering Nintendo and historically-preserving Microsoft, have failed to provide truly good gaming experiences. There's nothing more satisfying than turning a working vintage console on to an instant game booting up without instructions and already knowing how to play it. The level of social interaction may not be the same as online gaming, but it's better for in-person gatherings to watch in awe instead of getting angry that they lost when they played.
Been playing this game a lot recently on my Switch. It's great to see you playing it. :)
Gotta love that this is also on the Nintendo Switch Online Service!!
I remember Toys R Us branches in the NYC area in the mid to late 90's having such an overstock of NES games like NES Open Tournament Golf that they even couldn't give them away for cheap NC. I still have 5 of them unopen in the plastic that were only a Dollar. But a great game nonetheless.
Anthony..
damn, you're sitting on at least $1000 if they're in good condition, maybe more if you get them graded.
I remember seeing a pile of Dogbone NES controllers at a Caldor in Connecticut in 1999 for $2 each and my Dad didn't want to buy any of them, and we even had a Top Loader with only one controller!
@@TRJ2241987 that’s nothing! I remember Best Buy in West Des Moines had a PILE of Eathbound SNES boxes that included the strategy guide for FIVE DOLLARS apiece, and my mom wouldn’t buy me ONE. If I’d have bought a few if I were an adult, I’d have made bank!!!!
Somehow i sat through 10 hours of 8 bit golf.
One of my favorite golf games for the NES! If I remember this was the only first party NES game released in 1991.
Thanks to this gane I learned what a yard is
I play the Japanese version of this classic quite a bit. Glad to see another fan!
Mario Open Golf
I still own _my_ Japanese copy of this game from my childhood.
I really enjoy your channel Alex. keep up the good work my friend.
Fun fact: Eiji Aonuma was the sprite designer for this game before rising to superstardom with Zelda games starting from Ocarina of Time and later in the series.
Mario also had on his patriotic golf attire in Golf U.S. Course for the Famicom Disk System.
This marks Princess Daisy’s only appearance in the 90s (she did appear in Mario bros: print world but only on artwork)
I'm happy Daisy made an appearance in this game, but I was upset many people got away with Daisy being a Peach-recolor for the 1990s. Daisy's original appearance looked ridiculously similar to Peach, they forgot back then that Daisy and Peach were different characters in the first place.
Yeah, Daisy's earliest design in this game, I am not a fan of. NES limitations, sure. But, it is very lazy.
*_"Super Mario Land"_* basically established her look in the N64 era with her dress having the white polka-dots and her hair, a darker orange color than her dress (which, on it's own merits, it is an alright look).
Personally, I think Daisy's current design is the best one. It's still similar to Peach, but at least it isn't *ridiculously* similar.
@@Dorian_Scott Daisy got censored for the 1990s in terms of major video game appearances because most people had a hard time recognizing her as a different character just because she looked ridiculously similar to Peach in her first appearance. Everything we were led to believe about Princess Daisy in the 1990s was a lie.
Let's not forget that she first appeared at a time where American society acted like P.E.T.A. The difference is
they were protecting little innocent children. Because America was very protective of innocent little children, no weird content in the original Japanese version were allowed in anything aimed to younger audiences. As it seems, Daisy's current design is much better because she's her tomboyish semi-clone instead of her tomboyish doppelganger which is what confused many gamers back in the day.
Man this brings back so many memories...
I had to watch this while playing 90's hard rock in the background.
This is the game I fell in love with golf with!
I played the heck out of this when I was a kid. 41, now.
So many good memories! I think I had like 8-10 million in the bank?
.. TEN HOURS?! Gotta be the longest NES game I ever seen.
Princess peach has a derply face when you're on the green. You can't unsee that.
Wow its a good time to have fun playing Golf On Nintendo Entertainment system in 1991
You know you're having fun recording a non-commentated playthrough if you spend 10 hours on a *_Mario_* game.
Nice game.
Hands down my 2nd favorite NES game. 1st is Blades of Steel. Hockey and Golf. You really didn't need any other games for your NES lol
I respect you for palying 10 hours of 8 bit golf (even if its like just a loop) but who actually watched this whole thing???
If only it had a bunch of rich slobs trying to outshined some rich snobs in a winner takes all golf tournament; With Bill Murray trying to blow up a no good gopher into Greasy, Grimey, Gopher Guts. Then it would be perfect. All to a jamming Kenny Logging's Soundtrack of course.
I heard people say that this is the best golf game on the NES.
There's no reason why this shouldn't have been on NES Classic. They got it in Japan. Also Ice Hockey would've been a great addition.
Speaking about the man who handle out the money looked like Ken Williams, it does made sense as Sierra Online was popular in around mid-80's to mid-90's. If you are PC User back in mid-80's and mid-90's, chance that you play one of Sierra Online Adventure Games.
I doubt that was what Nintendo went for. Sierra wasn't exactly the biggest game developer, ever back then.
I've played *_some_* Sierra games as a kid, but not stuff like *_"King's Quest"_* , *_"Police Quest"_* , *_"Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory"_* , or even *_"Gabriel Knight"_* .
@@Dorian_Scott I dunno, Sierra was pretty massive. Maybe the perception is different because of how the PC and console markets were so far removed from one another.
@@NintendoComplete I never really thought that *_Sierra_* was a huge developer. Back then, you would hear *constant* praise over companies like *_"Natsume"_* , *_"Vic Tokai"_* , *_"Sunsoft"_* , *_"Capcom"_* , and of course, *_"Konami"_* . I don't think I've ever came across people constantly talking about the latest and best *_Sierra_* games at the time when I was a kid. Hence why I always thought they were a good _small_ company of talented folks.
I don’t know if this game was ports of Golf Japan & US Course for Famicom Disk System or just a new game in general.
It's a different game, but it reuses stuff from the disk games. This is sorta like the "ultimate" edition.
I do own this game but haven't played it since I was 13 years old, (I'm 40 now) but I've always wondered if it's possible to get a hold in one in this game? If so it's probably extremely difficult to pull off, but is it possible?
I have a few times. It doesn't happen often.
Seeing Daisy in this game and Super Mario Land, we had no idea she was a different character from Peach back in the day. During the 90s, Daisy looked too similar to Peach in her earlier gaming appearances the gamers and localizers didn't realize she was a different character. I had no idea of this game existing when it first came out. Not only that, I didn't know how Daisy was different from Peach in her earlier designs. We mistook Daisy for Peach on accident because most people were used to Peach during the Game Boy's early years and we couldn't tell how Daisy was different from Peach in her earlier designs. At first glance, most people didn't care about Daisy because she was just a Peach rip-off in her earlier gaming appearances. Even if Daisy's earlier designs was a Peach rip-off and is a Peach pretender to this day, I have never believed that Daisy and Peach were the same character. Peach pretender or not, Daisy and Peach were different characters to begin with. I feel bad for the people who assumed that Daisy was just a Peach rip-off in her earlier appearances. She may have appeared at random at first, but her new appearance and tomboyish voice made her a fleshed out character. I'm happy she still exists in video games. Daisy gets a 7.5/10.
This Nintendo NES game, NES Open Tournament Golf, is in the Sports Series.
Pregaming before the big one this year
RW:just who are those twin girls next to Mario and Luigi?
Princesses Peach and Daisy
@@Marc412 No its not
Edit: The Comment below me and above me is a liar and is wrong about everything
@@UA-camr-xi6qo yes, it is. Shut up
@@Keezawea Daisy has orange hair?
@@UA-camr-xi6qo Not if the NES color limits have anything to say about it. Is that actually Daisy though? I always thought it was just two Toadstools. On the title screen they look nearly identical, flipped horizontally with a few subtle adjustments and different color palettes assigned.
How different is the Famicom version, Mario Open Golf from this game?
It’s actually VERY different, almost feels like a completely different game
The playthrough is 10 hours? Wow! Is that the longest recorded playthrough?
Hahaha not by a long shot. My playthrough of Dragon Quest XI is about 90 hours.
@@NintendoComplete haha yeah but I mean like a non rpg game
Ha not by a long shot. There’s Mario Galaxy play through that is over 19hrs
actually the game was released in 1991 in NA and 1992 in EU/PAL regions i'm not sure why youtube put 1987 i guess it's Japanese release?
10:11:27 When he gets that first million 💰 🤑
I can't really tell if it's Daisy on title screen due to hardware limitations
in a nutshell It is basically just Daisy at home:
The actual first Mario Golf game
Classic!!
mario bros and their hos
In anyone comes across the out of bounds sound effect, can you let me know the timestamp.
I can never get the long distance timed right.
I Would like a Request I would like a Longplay of Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Can you had Hole-in-one?
Bro where you play this game ?? on pc???
Just like a pangya golf
The Japanese version is titled "Mario Open Golf". Why did they leave Mario out of the title?
Increíble
DUDE, IVE BEEN PLAYING FOR AN HOUR AND EVERY TIME I HIT THE BALL IT ONLY GOES 2 YARDS. WHY
That's one longass video!!
I never knew how to play it, any tips?
Not really, it's pretty straightforward. Have you read the manual? It explains it all pretty well.
Mario never hit the ball no matter how many times I hit the button how do you play this game?
Don't mash. Press once to get the arrow moving, again to bring the arrow back (this determines the shot power) and again when the arrow is back on the white starting point (this determines accuracy). 1W (1 wood) is the driver, it's the longest club but also hardest to use, so you're probably better off going with the 3I (3 iron) to get the timing right. The higher the number the shorter the club, until you get to PW (pitching wedge) and SW (sand wedge), and PT (putter) is just 2 presses, one to start the arrow and one to determine the power.
@@sportsjefe well i hit the ball atleast but I'm sure I get better score now thx dude☝
What, you’re not going to even try for 3,000,000?!
Just wondering. Do you not like doing commentary?
Yeah, I don't really like listening to it, so I don't see the point in making videos with it.
@@NintendoComplete fair 😂 either way your videos are helpful. I use them if I’m stuck at a point or want an in depth walkthrough (or looking to see what unheard of games I need to hunt down) 😂
10 hours what
Ok. For the record. Is it "Marry-oh" or "Marr-io"?😂
Mar - ee - oh
@Dave Miller I'm guessing you came across someone who always mispronounced Mario's name if you're asking that question..., correct?
*_OR,_* judging by that (😂 *_"I Died Laughing"_* emote), you're just asking that for kicks?
@@Dorian_Scott ha ha little bit of both. I've always pronounced it "Marry-oh"
princess peach have a twin sister?
No, apparently it’s Princess Daisy
Ten hours spent playing Mario Golf for upload. Someone has A LOT of time on their hands LOL
