New one is better looking. Put the 1st and 2nd gen side by side in a photo, block out the tail on the 2nd gen and everything about it is more cohesive and fluid, not a 1st gen mish-mash of circles and squares and warts and things that don't line up, and knee tank scallops that don't match one's actual knees. Plus who can argue with more power and same/better mpg?
Back in the 1990's everything had a "chunky" rear seat. People have gotten used to seeing nothing but a fat bee stinger sticking out the back of bikes for 20 years.
I like it. Don't care about the mirror and back seat looks like some other comment. I'd say it's definitely a good upgrade from the previous generation. And to be honest, true retro bike enthusiast will modify the looks anyway no matter what comes from the factory.
Being born in the early 70s I do fully appreciate the design of the new XSR 900. It will definitely replace my Z650 once it is available in Germany, presumably not until Sep 2022.
Great review Jen!!! Especially because you did touch on what most people miss, "how's the chassis / suspension combination for the occasional track-day"... I cannot wait to see you rail the R9 on the track =P
I sat on this bike in the dealership for the first time. It really looks a quality built machine in person. HOWEVER the TFT is TINY!!! you will need goggles to see that tiny screen. Its the same size of a Game&Watch
Yeah, I always think it's a slightly odd look when they try for a 70s style on a modern frame with fi and liquid cooling. I still think they're usually good bikes, but it gets old hearing people saying "it looks just like a UJM." It doesn't, it's own thing, and that's great. Also, I'd rather have standard mirrors from factory, since there's a bigger after market for bar ends and they can be a little comprising.
Bar end mirrors actually show what's behind you, not 2/3 elbows and shoulders in the way, plus they have less dorky hardware sticking out disrupting the air before it hits your face.
This will hopefully be my bike one day. I was looking at the MT09, but I hate the front end on it. I like this look a lot more and its a very similar bike. I hope I can afford it because my current job decided not to give a raise this year, unless your my boss, who gave himself a 35 million dollar raise while lowering the hours we can work. I'm going to have to find a new job. I hope everyone who wants this bike is able to attain it.
Seems like an interesting motorcycle! Talking about the styling, personally, the headlight looks a bit odd. Maybe a bigger one would look better? But why am I worrying? we'll never get these sweet machines in India.... :')
Styling of the first gen is so much better, best retro-styled modern bike period. But the performance and tech of the new generation is really impressive.
Wish I could click a "background music off" button and listen to everything else. So stinking hyper and noisy. I think this is the best version of the sports 890cc triple Yamaha makes. Needless to say, Yamaha has "updated" the CP3 bikes no less than THREE TIMES and FAILED to give it a SENSIBLE FUEL CAPACITY AGAIN.
Watched a few reviews on this and it's cuzzins. So far, yours is the best one. Does Rev sell the soft bags for it? Any chance they might fit an FJR? Really not happy with the stock hard cases.
While the looks are kinda meh, it shows an improvement over the OG FZ-09. Also, cruise control comes standard. This is arguably one of the best bang for your buck motorcycles.
Can’t denied Yamaha is up to the game with the Mt09 line up very impressive but for a retro standpoint they miss the point IMO doesn’t mean it’s a bad but it’s just a Mt09 that looks better.
Nah this just like confuse kids that still does not have personality , bad looking for retro , nor modern, last one much better. just update the front light and make the round dial 2.
It's too bad that Yamaha has XSR900's available for a press event but nothing available at the dealers for regular folks to buy. Seems rather stupid to have a big press launch and no inventory. As the saying goes, "you can't sell apples from an empty cart".
Just goes to show you can't please everybody. I am one those that like the color, styling, and modern touches to this bike. The seat is made to reflect the old 80's cowl style, but if one does not like it, they can be changed. I wish they just had plain seats with included removable rear cowls. Judging the looks of the bike through a video is shorthanded since every motorcycle looks very different in person.
Maybe it's obvious, this is clearly an answer to Kawasaki's Z900RS. I think Kawa did a much better job with styling however and hit that vintage bike look with a firmer strike then this bike.
Likely because it's just a first ride. This was done at a press ride - basically a demo day ride for journalists. @@delasse3178 - I have to agree. It's not just lighter, but MUCH lighter, and the price difference is significant as well. That said, I love the 4 cylinder and styling of the Z900RS better. Great review. I agree, I'd prefer round gauges and a less chunky seat at the back.
Yes indeed right on the money.
Yeah the seat think was odd.
Flyscreen will help hide the rectangle gauge, and from early reports, seat change will be fairly easy with no components built into the seat.
