    I’ve watched every episode of the 401 rebuild and have enjoyed it so much! Wonder how many women , especially in my age bracket who have watched all of it? I’m 75! It’s just so fascinating to me how long it took to take it all apart and then clean, repair, allodyne, prime etc. and then to put it back together. Just awesome! Can’t wait to see it fly again. 💗

    You know its absolutely awesome how your crew went from being so camera shy to being absolutely glowing folks. You can really see their true selves come out, especially when they're helping each other out or joking around. I think most of all guys like Sam and Joe really came out of their shells.
    Really excited to see this airplane come back to life. Even I used to be skeptical at times, but seeings its journey has definitely proven to me this bird is going to go back in the sky sooner than we think.

    I worked on Twin Cessnas for over 30 years. The first gear retraction system rigging I did was on a Cessna 421. I maintained a particular Cessna 310R for 18 years. I can tell you that when the gear is rigged right it works beautifully. But you MUST NOT take any short cuts in the rigging procedure. Another thing, during each Annual Inspection you will find the gear (at least one leg) will be out of rig. Tony Saxon of TAS Aviation says just normal flexing of the airplane in flight (turbulence) will throw the gear out of rig specification.
    Very nice work going on there. I see you are not cutting any corners. Beautiful

    Hi Jason! Great job and coming along quickly on your 401. Just a FYI I noticed on torquing the nuts on the "A Frame" as you called it for the nose gear. You are holding the snap torque wrench correctly on the first nut but not the second nut in the video. You had your thumb by the pivot/break point on the wrench for the second I believe it was. That can and often does result in an under torque condition. The correct hand location for proper torque is almost like an open hand on the handle only on the wrench. Some even have a mark to show where your hand should not go past. A direct pull on the handle and no twisting input from your hand. I retired from 42.5 years in aerospace and customer quality after many years in assembly and test with large gas turbine fuel controls. We used many different types of torque wrenches including one like you were using. It's not hard to induce under torque. Just a thought but maybe revisit the torque, just for safety.

    Hey guys just a suggestion when you are using torque paint/seal. Make sure that the stripe goes from the fuselage to the end of the bolt. By only applying it to the end of the nut and bolt, you will only know that the nut has turned. If you apply from the frame to the end of the bolt, you will be able to see if the bolt is spinning in the hole as well. Some applications of torque seal is mandatory, in these cases, you want to ensure that the torque seal is applied IAW OEM standards. Just passing on some advice from a 40 year aviation mechanic.

    • @rollinrudi
      @rollinrudi Рік тому +1

      I would add one thing to the paint/marker. Always use the paint after every bolt torqued one by one. So that you don't end up having 4 bolts not torqued and marked by mistake. Not very likely to happen, but the worst I've seen was six bolts all loose and marked (luckily not on an airplane, but yet a good practice regradless of the extra time spent).

    18:14. That style of torque wrench is only accurate if you have your hand in the center of the grip. To close to the socket and you over torque, to far off the end and you under torque. I’m sure torquing those bolts a little too much won’t hurt but it’s good to get in the habit of always using it correctly.

    Love going out riding. During the three day long fourth of July weekend We do a Lake Superior shoreline run every year. As the kids and grandkids get older our trips take longer because we stop and take pictures more. We drop the ORVs off in Munising and ride to our property in Paradise. We must look like a hobo traveling show going down the road as we use a F450 with a fifth wheel to haul a 35 foot trailer with 2 Can-am Commanders, three 570 Sportsman's, two 325 sportsman's and a Warrior. During the ride we stop at the Pictured Rocks outlook, Grand Marais Coast Guard station, Grand Marais where I lived for a couple years as a kid for lunch where my folks owned a restaurant. Then down to the Lake Superior Overlook and beach acess for a quick swim in the 50 degree cold water. We make a stop at Crisp point lighthouse for a dinner cookout and then from there we head to our property in Paradise. If the kids and Grandkids aren't to worn down from the Saturday run we make a short Sunday after noon drive off through the woods over to the Vermillion Point Life Saving station historical museum. It is one of the original life saving stations on Lake Superior. From there we go up to the Great lakes shipwreck museum. Then we head into the city of Paradise to the Goat Locker for dinner, where the kids can go over to the goat pen and get some pictures and watch the goats play around. By the time Sunday comes to a close they're pretty much wiped out and ready to head for home. Once the kids and grandkids have left the wife and I just relax for the day enjoying nature. We leave after all the traffic has already been home and going to work. It makes our drive much easier.
    You should always make time to get some R&R and it looks like you did a great job of it.
    Love all the content keep it coming. Some day I might actually make it to Oshkosh again. But in the meantime I have 5 grandkids to entertain at the drop of the hat.

    Good to see more visible progress being made on reassembling the 401. I've been following along since the start of this journey... That sim looks awesome, but I recon the bezels between the screens would probably bug me after a while and If I was spending that much money I'd get a Simpit projection system.
