the dji website does not mention the focus pro kit being compatible with a Z cam. Did you run into any compatibility issues
@@declanogilvy1821 I use it with the Z Cam without any issues but I don't use the focus pro kit to start or stop the camera recording since the DJI Focus Pro can't connect to the Z Cam camera control. Then again it's not that hard to move my finger over an inch to press the record button on the camera directly. For focusing it works great with the Z Cam or any other camera I used it with so far.

Image quality is the same but some new recording modes have been added but the major improvements are the build quality and body design.
Hey Tom! Very nice review (as usual with you 👌! No one is talking about this but is it possible with this new Dji Lidar to calibrate photo lenses manually like a Canon 24-70mm L for example which turns infinitely. Is it possible to define a Point A and a Point B to be able to use these photographic lenses? Thank you in advance for your reply!
Finally DJI updated their LiDAR system. Thanks Tom for the info! Do you think it's still worth getting it even with the small small screen? Or should we wait for version 2?
It's still better than most in camera AF systems. It works almost perfectly when tracking people. Just in object tracking it would be helpful to have a larger touch screen.
- No A-B points with only the hand grip unit? We need the wireless FF controller to do that?
- On the hand grip unit, is it possible to reverse the focus wheel? aka switch right/left to focus near/farther away.

Would love to see a comparison to PDmovie lidar system.
As an owner of the PDmovie I can state the following: it is a difference like day and night: about 5 meter range, three memory slots, only the nearest object will be focused, cannot use a mate box (lidar is in the motor, so the mate box is in its way).
Yes it is cheaper but the possibilities you will get with the DJI are so much more. But to be honest, I still wait for receiving the DJI. As I am living in Germany, it will take another couple of weeks till it is available here. So my only reference is this video.

Great and thanks a bunch. Do you use autofocus professionally? All around me manual focus pulling seems to be done less and less.
Sometimes. 5 years ago I and many other cinematographers wouldn't consider relying on AF during bigger budget productions. Since then the tech has gotten so good that I start using it in some cases.
Great review Tom. But you forgot to remove the small stickers (yellow markings) on the motors and the idea from DJI is to put the stickers there with "F" and "I" that's why they have the size they 😀🙃 have.

If you have a Parfocal Zoom...you only should have to set it once for the full zoom range.
So if I own an RS3 Pro, do I just need to purchase the lidar and focus motor?

Good Review. How does it compare to the previous version? I had the previous version of the Lidar. I was very frustrated with it. I had to recalibrate all the time. This made it completely unusable in a professional context. The theory of it is great, but it is miles away from internal stabilization of the Sony camera. I say this as BlackMagic user.
I find this new version a lot more stable and unless the motors are detached from the lens you dont have to re-calibrate. Also recalibrating it is faster.
this system makes me very hopeful for solo shooting although every demo i've seen for this lidar system feels off on focus by the slightest amount, or lagging behind the actual subject. almost like it jumps from the shoulder to the face randomly or something. maybe its just me but i'm still very hopeful for this system regardless.
Yes, there can be a slight delay when the subject moves fast but you can also adjust how fast you want the system to adjust the focus. I pretty much have it in medium setting which is what you have seen in my video here.
does this unit have DJI app integration? AS a zcam user you probably know how great the phone app is and sometimes I use Zcam on my phone and DJI on an ipad when using the RS gimbal - so I'm wondering if I can use the app w/ this (this would save me from the high bright monitor as I could have an AC guy use the app while I"m opering the gimbal...)
It does have an app to control the DJI Focus Pro but I haven't seen a way to transmit the LiDAR data or the lidar camera view to the app. But I got this before the product was officially launched with very little documentation or info plus the app was still not in it's final stage so I didn't really use it that much. I will be doing more tests now that the official firmware came out.
Should I get this even though all my lens have auto focus already?
if you like your current camera/lens setup and you get the kind of AF performance you need then no you don't need this. This kit is more if you have manual focus lenses that you would like to control remotely or if you would like to add AF to them.
does the lidar have to be lined up to where the camera sensor is?
No. As long as its close to the lens it will work. You will have to measure the distance from the LiDAR to the camera's image plane when you first set it up but as long as you don't move the LiDAR after that, there is no more setup required.
I have the Ronin 4D is this a direct upgrade module for the camera as well?
I dont own the Ronin 4D, but from what I heard from DJI the Focus Pro kit will work directly with the Ronin 4D and give you all the advantages of AF and manual wireless follow focus.
Can you use the Tilta Nucleus Nano 2 system with the Focus Pro Lidar at all? It would be annoying to have to buy an entirely new follow focus system just to use the lidar itself.
Nope... if you want to use the Lidar and Auto Focus function then you have to get the kit from DJI since Tilta Nucleus doesn't support Lidar or AF functions.
Is it possible to use this with the Tilta Dual Handle Power Supply Bracket?
From what I understand yes. I don't have the Tilta Dual Handle Power Supply Bracket to test it out myself but the battery in the side grip looks to have the same connection. Even if that connection doesn't work you could always just power it using USB-C cable from the Tilta Dual Handle Power Supply Bracket
Since DJI is in that L MOUNT ALLIANCE thing, can it actually use lidar without the need for the fiz?
You can use this with any camera or lens
Given the collaboration it should be possible, but other people have tested this and it's not yet available. I am also hoping for support for this.

I will do a follow up as I use it more but I have used it in low light and it's actually way better than any in camera contrast based AF. It makes sense since it uses LiDAR depth data to focus instead of visible light.
Do you need an handle and does it only work with the DJI gimbal??
No you dont need the handle and it works with the DJI gimbal but also without it. This is an independent focus system that you can use on any lens.
Can I ask - do I need cinema lenses or can I use with say, a Canon EF mount photo lens?
You can use any lens. Preferably no focus by wire but lenses with hard stops. For photo lenses you will just have to put on the gear ring that comes with the kit.

could you use it with an electronic lens without hard stops? . That stopped me from buying the pdmovie lidar :(
You can use it stopping manually the mouvement of the lens. The problem it’s not hard stops it’s focus by wire
If it's focus by wire then its tricky but possible. You would basically have to manually setup the lens each time and in theory it could work but honestly it would be more practical to get another manual lens.
Hello Tom. I have a question. Why is nobody using the DJI Focus Pro with a microphone on a camera??? Is the focusing motor that loud so the audio captured with a microphone is unusable?
Its mostly because mic ontop of the camera wouldn't produce the best sound in a film or TV setup. If you want to shoot vlogging type videos then on camera mics are okay but then in that case you definitely wouldn't want to use a Lidar system like the DJI Focus Pro for focusing but instead use a camera with built in AF system to keep the size and weight of the camera setup down.
Can you hook the handle up to Dtap?
Yes you can. You can power it with Dtap and the cable for that is provided plus you can also power it with any USB power source.
Is that the same handle as the RS3Pro?
Yes the grip battery is the same.
What if your lenses don't have gear wheels?
There are rubber gear rings included that you can put on lenses that don't have the gears

how to use Lidar with a zoom lens?
Same as with a prime lens. You just mount the 3rd motor to control the zoom gear.
@@TomAntoshow to calibrate it? set a certain focal length and calibrate at it? do it in several positions and then switch when changing focal length? Here's a video about it.

DJI is really on to something - only brand that makes cheap turnkey solutions for run and gun - everything works together as a combined system - PD and data. Only thing I absolutely hate is the USB c connectors. Would it kill them price wise to put industry standard connectors like Lemo on ? USB C is about as flimsy as micro HDMI... dont trust them . really not pro grade.

Haha... yup I was very set against AF back in the day myself because back then the tech sucked and was very unreliable. But now with better in camera AF systems and now also this LiDAR AF system it makes it much easier to use manual lenses on small productions with out AC help.
