I bought my D-18 in 1973 new for $320. I play it daily. I had the neck reset and bridge reglued about 5 years ago. Not bad for 51 years of use. It will outlive me. It’s been a friend for life.
I bought one a few weeks ago before this review came out ninagree with all points. I really was trying to buy a D-28 for all the artists that use it but I felt that the D-18 as a standalone sound was full, warm and complete. I see how the D-28 would sit nicer maybe in a small band or with other instruments but as a solo sound maker the D-18 is the best.
I have had one of these since 2012 I have gigged with it and played it and I cannot believe how good it sounds and it just keeps getting better

I sold my brand new 2018 Martin D-18 in April of this year 2023. I miss it so much. I'm in the market for a brand new 2024. I'll buy one next year. I've had the Guild D-40 traditional made in Oxnard California and Bozeman made Gibson Hummingbird. They have all their own sound but there is nothing like the sound of a Martin guitar!
i agree Jose.....ive owned and played them all!!! the guild gibson etc cannot compare with a top Martin.....why did you sell???????? im currently shopping for my 11th martin!

@@soofitnsexy Norm Harris from Norm's Rare guitars came to see my collection. I sold all my collection! I've purchased over 100+ solid wood brand new guitars since 1979. I know what you mean about Martin guitar!
My 2021 d18 has two tiny swirls on the sitka top. Looks like imperfections of knots Martin always candles out. I've never seen one ever pass through with this imperfection. I was was sooo upset when I received it. Now after having it a couple years, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Talk about one of a kind!!! This don't happen on a Martin standard. Ever! Talk about a character birthmark!!!!
I have always considered the D-28 the "Gold Standard" but then I played back to back with a D-18 and found the D-18 more audibly pleasing with a fuller, more rounded tone and every bit as much "Thump" as the D-28 minus the harshness! I would have gladly shelled out the extra cash for the D-28 if justifiable but came home with the D-18 and had a LR Baggs Anthem installed.
Personally, I prefer the D-18's Mahogany back and sides, the D-28's Rosewood back and sides provide a wholly different experience. Its all about how the guitar will be used and personal preference.........it would be nice to own both! 👍😉
I just bought my first d18 and Martin ever and its outright beautiful all around. like it throws me into daze when I'm playing. I looked up my serial number and It was made in 2022 and is the satin finish.... its just good lord... gorgeous. I dont think I will ever get rid of this guitar. it sounds opened up and worn in. my pops has a HD28 that's 20 years old and I think mine sounds better.... maybe its cause this ones mine ha!
Sounds super bassy on my end. I think it's because you have the big condenser mic near the sound hole. I always put it around the 12-14th fret and not off axis
D-18 is my favorite Martin ..actually my favorite sounding acoustic. Everyone I picked up sounds good. The D-28 gets all the glory . Claims are that it's treble cuts through better in Bluegrass circles when flatpicking.. I differ on this . Song songs maybe, others the D-18 shines through. And the D-28 lacks the fullness when playing a venue. Bottom line D-18 is a better all around tone . So now I'm building one . This way I can have the neck just the way I want it .
The D-18 sounds warmer and fuller than the D-28. I suppose this is because of the Sitka spruce. Rosewood seems to give off a brighter and richer sound.
🌎 Sounds Real inspiring, would love to win a Martin D 28 acoustic guitar.. gotta love that ! I see you have a good musical perception, much appreciated, Thanks 🎶 Keep up the good work 🌈
I have OMC-28E that ticks a lot of boxes, but I would like one that is a little louder and has more midrange and maybe a 12 fretter, still not a big as a Dreadnought, what could I be looking for?
Yes . Save you money and buy an LR Baggs or other higher end pickup. I don't care for Fishman very much although their higher end ones are playable I recommend no under saddle pickup because it will absorb some of the vibration when playing acoustically loosing a little volume and even changing the tone .. plus they prettymuch just sound tinny. A lot of times it's almost impossible to get the saddle to fit on some of them properly. The thicker ones suck up the most volume, the thinner ones are the most tinny sounding. Besides your not really altering the guitar with the LRBaggs because you are basically just sticking a mic inside.. easy to remove if you want to return it to stock. Other than the hole for the end pin jack . Bit it goes through the tail block and doesn't affect the tonal values of the guitar at all. And even that can be filled with a dowel , reamed back out and the original tail pin replaced.
I had a D28 but sold it in 2020 after being laid off, to make payments on my necessities, due to the plandemic. I loathed this sale for awhile since I loved that guitar, but recently I purchased a D18 and I was blown away. Being cheaper made me wonder why I hadn't looked at one before. I love the more full bit of a mid rounded sound that it has. The only thing I miss is the volute that the d28 had. I loved the thumb rest it added as I played chords.
I understand, I sold 3 Custom Shop Gibsons, which included a double neck and a Custom Shop Tele because of 3 (ex) brothers jealousy…oh yeah, and my house, but I kept my 46 year old D-18! ✌️😎🎸🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
I've an older Martin JC-16 KWS that still blows me away every time I pick it up to play. Best acoustic guitar ever
My D 18 sounds better than my Eric Clapton 000 series: it has more full tone better balance and more bell or raindrop tones.
Doesn’t the D18 have scalloped bracing, where the D28 only has non scalloped forward shifted X bracing. Sounds great!
That's correct. The HD-28 has scalloped bracing.
Both D18 and D28 have forward-shifted X-braces now.
