Steven Brundage, in an AMA, said that they literally could have picked any card they wanted.
I have no clue how he did the 1 second solve but at least I figured out how he did the last trick.
Might have only shown 3 sides. So we think it's solved on all 6. When he throws it behind his back that's amazing.

I don't really see how the cube thing is a trick. You can clearly see it's only a few moves from completion and then he does it behind his back. remember the WR for the whole cube is just 5.25sec (and 6.88 one handed) so you can easily do several moves in the time it goes out of view.

I think it's Amazing but I have a little problem and that's everytime he's done that trick the person choosing the card is the 6 of Diamonds, I haven't been able to figure it out yet but when everybody is picking the same card something feels Off but he's good I'm not denying that because I'd go see him Live
What cube do you use, Brundage?
the six of diamonds. a prepared cube and a card the only thing he had to do is that put the corner of the card in the bottom and they he flipped the torn part up when he tore it.

why all the volunters you choosen while doing card trick choose 6 diamond only
He is showing only max of 9 cards to choose,,, which card peices are already fitted in the rubix cube.
It looks weird everybody chose 6 of diamonds, but it shows how non-magician's brain work. Most people don't even know names of all card suits, and chose simplest suit they recognise quick, and card separated enough in the deck to be prominent. My guess is they could chose 2 diamonds, jack of clubs, queen of hearts, and a few others with no problems too. As for the ripping part, it has to align perfectly, and not two rips will be same, so lots of practice there...
Perhaps he has a packet of cards in there already ripped and each little cube has a different card in it. Maybe? Idk.

+Timothy Nyota he isn't offering all 52 cards for him to pick from... ya silly. he grabs a stack from the deck of cards he has pre ripped and has the corners hiding in the cube. he memories where each corner is in the cube.and no matter which card is picked they could find it. if he let them dig through the whole deck and pick their card it'd be impressive but that's not the case
