When buying ribbon for the ornaments, how many yards long should you buy?

It will depend on the width of your ribbon, because you can cut wider ribbon in half and get almost twice the use ('almost', because this excludes what you'll need for a band). But if using 1.5" wide ribbon, you'll need approx 3 yards or so.
