@ You are sitting down in a canoe so it is all about torso length. You want to put the handle of the paddle on the canoe seat and where the shaft meets the blade should be around your forehead. This also works well because when sizing a paddle it is about the length of the shaft and not as much about the blade length.

Some folks like myself have longer arms. If I judge the length of my paddle by my torso from the top of my head to the seat the paddle is too short for my arms. If I judge my paddle by gripping the top and just above the blade holding my paddle above my head with my elbows at a 90 degree the paddle that is right for me is too long for the first test. Flat water paddles are for my type of canoeing so I need the long blade. I’d love to try the bent ones but no one sells them anywhere near here.

@ Henrico, VA is where I live, a yucky city controlled by Democrats. I canoe in the lagoon at Henricus Park or on the Appomattox River putting in at the Hopewell Marina or one of the parks on the Appomattox River. Carrying a 17 foot canoe on a Honda Fit gets a lot of attention.
I feel like that length recommendation is wrong I have always used paddles shorter than that

I will say that in our area we don’t really use bent shaft paddles so I’m not really sure about sizing them
