  • In this college football podcast about the Utah Utes, Couz will talk about the hype surrounding Kyle Whittingham's Utes as they prepare to play their first season of Big 12 football in 2024. Couz will give an example of the media narrative surrounding Utah from Joel Klatt, as well as the narrative from fans. He will show data that proves why other Big 12 teams may also have a legit chance to claim the title of kings of the Big 12. He will give his opinion on which team, if any, will make that claim.
As the Pac-12's four corner schools of Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Arizona State prepare to officially join the Big 12 Conference for the 2024 college football season, the preseason polls and narratives have already begun. With the combination of Kyle Whittingham's coaching and the sustained success of the Utah program, many across the country expect that success to continue in the Big 12 and for the Utes to be the dominant program. Couz is here to say, "not so fast my friend," as he gives reasons as to why other teams in the Big 12 - like Oklahoma State, Kansas State, TCU, and others - are being overlooked. #big12football #utahutes #utahfootball

There are a lot of reasons why Utah is considered a favorite. Let’s first talk about depth. When Utah first joined the Pac12, they did well in Sept-Oct. But, by Nov they were relying heavily on their 2nd and 3rd string players. The difference between a P5 and G5 school was the talent level of the “next man up”. It takes a few years to build that initial depth. So the examples from the expansion B12 teams isn’t applicable.
Second, Utah plays a style of football that travels well. They control the clock with a strong run game to preserve the defense. It’s usually good for 7-8 games a year. When you add an experienced QB (Rising), TR Kuithie, and WR Singer, they are good for 1-2 additional wins.
Finally their schedule holds up nicely, with OSU and AZ in Sept and no KSU. The hard game (outside of those 2) will be the UCF game as they will have to travel to Florida at the end of November.
No one is saying that another team can’t with the B12. But if you look at consistency and how the team is built, Utah deserves to be in the conversation.

As a Utah fan let’s just see how it plays out. Too many good teams including WV that will have a say this year. The only guarantee is nothing will be given in the B12 to any team and everything will be earned. I’m excited for this new experience in the B12. Good luck WV would be cool if we both make it to the B12 championship this year. Nothing but respect. One of my all time favorite college players was Pat White on those Rich Rod teams. Go Utes!

Utah’s best chance of winning the conference is this year. I think teams like TCU, UCF, KSU, and OSU are every bit the program as Utah and I would argue TCU and UCF are better positioned to be better moving forward, they recruit better and are located in better locations.

What has people very confident for this year is Utah has the most talent their program has ever had on offense, and by a large margin. With the hype that they have been given by Vegas to journalist they will be getting everyones best punch. It's going to be a grind. I haven't done a deep dive into b12 opponents so it's hard to tell. Do we think we have a good team? Yes Do we hope we win every game we play? Yes what else would you think we should think? We have respect for every team in this conference. Ute fan here. Unfortunately the loud minority has given some of us a bad rap. If healthy, I do believe that Utah will compete for the XII title this year, but they aren't going to "wipe the floor" with other teams. Utah has struggled on the road the last several years & they haven't played well in raucous environments that are found in the Big 12. Utah's last big road win was against Washington in 2019. OSU & UCF on the road concern me. Colorado in Boulder could potentially be tough as well. Before you laugh at that, realize that they're a rival & will have that game circled. Utah has an incredible home field advantage at RES, but TCU will likely be a tough game as well. Looking past this year, Utah's team is senior-laden & will need to reload for next year. They have a ton of great young talent, but so do a lot of other Big 12 teams.

Utah will dominate the new-look Big XII. They have been one of the best, if not the best, program in the Pac-12 over the last few years. The only thing they will have to cope with is travel. The Big XII is spread all over the place and most teams in the conference will have to do much traveling.

  • @Blasthole

Utah fan here. We seemed to have completely stopped prioritizing bowl games the last 5 full seasons. We went from being 10-0 in our last 10 to 0-5 in our last 5. The last 3 we had backup qb either play the whole game, or come in after rising got injured.
The reason Utah should win the big 12 this year is the schedule. It's probably the easiest p3 schedule in the country. We will likely make it to the championship and have one of the Kansas teams, or a rematch against OSU. There's a possibility of WVU getting in as well. We know the league is deep. We got humbled our first few years in the PAC 12. But we went from having the 5th or 6th most talented roster in the league, and competing for championships. To having the 2nd most talented roster in the league when we moved to the big 12.
I hope we stay in the big 12. I try not to be one of the unrealistic, arrogant, annoying fans that you see on X. But it's hard to not objectively say Utah isn't favored to win the league. I predict 1 or 2 losses still.
Utah is an extremely tough place to play. Many in the league were impressed with BYU and how loud and passionate they are, and they certainly can be. But Utah has sold out 83 in a row, and have a home record of 30-2 in their last 32 games at home (not counting COVID). It's a really tough environment to play in. Ask the Florida fans who came to town last year. They were pretty surprised that our "little" stadium was rocking the way it does

    • @Blasthole

I can't wait to go see Utah play in WVU, Iowa State, Kansas, etc. It's honestly exciting being in a league where more than 2 teams sell out their stadiums. I don't want to play in empty stadiums in Berkely or UCLA any more. It's time to play where people love the game as much as we do. I hope to god we don't go to the ACC. Jumping onto a sinking ship just a year after getting pulled onto a life raft after the Pac 12 sank themselves just seems like a bad bet.

I am looking forward to some great games. Big 12 has produced excellent football for years. I do think Texas Tech treated Mike Leach like crap. TCU did Gary Patterson dirty. I have always liked Coach Gundy. The Kansas Schools look formidable. There is a lot to like about the Big 12. Painting Utah as a villain is a disservice to the upcoming season. OSU has Utah at home as the conference opener. OSU is Utah’s hardest game until the conference title game. OSU has a very hard run after Utah, KSU, WVU, BYU, BU, ASU, TCU, TT, CU. So basically Utah can lose the hardest game against OSU and still make the title game because OSU has a tougher schedule and is likely to drop at least 1 of the first 3 conference games plus at least one of the last 2 games. As you said, Utah schedule is very favorable for a glorious outcome. OSU is the only hard game and it won’t keep them out of the championship game if they lose. Utah should win but not because they are so so good, because they have a very favorable schedule to reach the title game.

I think the consensus from Utah fans dominating is specifically about this next season. If you talk about the next 5 years Utah will be in the mix but the feeling of domination is specifically about next season. If you look at Utahs toughest games they will be at Oklahoma State and UCF. Utah matches up really well with Oklahoma States strengths which will give them a chance to win that tough away game and the UCF game is kind of a wild card at the moment. But there is no argument that these games are a lot easier than having to go to Eugene, to Washington, to USC. A lot of Utahs dominance FYI was in the last 5 seasons (not counting Covid year) where the program did start dominating in the PAC 12 and as you stated they are about a decade removed from moving from the mountain west. One of the fastest growing brands. Again though I think you are confusing guys like Klatt being high on Utah for next season vs thinking Utah will just dominate year in and year out.

Not claiming a national title, it's the NCAA recognizing UCF as a national champion based on the Coley Matrix, which is one of multiple ways the NCAA uses. Such as playoffs, AP, and coaches poll. The Coley Matrix is another.
People who deny UCF's achievement would also argue in years where the AP and coaches differed that one of them doesn't count. It's silly

It is alright if the media wants to up the stock of Utah football. It just forces the Utes to perform at a higher level. If they don't perform at that level, then there stock will drop hard in the years ahead. The best Utah can do is to seek to place itself in the middle of the Big 12 in order to prove themselves in the year ahead. It is always better to over-perform than to underperform. Now, everyone is expecting Utah to perform at the highest level of the conference with everyone bringing their best game against them. Such a move rarely goes well for any team even those picked in the AP top 10 based on the previous performance.

You want to talk about conference titles? How about those who haven't won the conference titles? OK State is the obvious one, IMO they are the best overall B12 team that remained, I know there is arguments against that, but thats just my opinion. What about the newcomers though? Every single PAC team has won a conference championship over last the 25 years or in the case of UCLA at least played for two. Even Colorado won a B12 chip. All except ARIZONA. Arizona is not a very good team (by PAC standards), won no football championship in last 25 years, they almost were beat by a bad Stanford team last season. OKLAHOMA hadn't lost more than 2 games in any season since 2014, that is until LR left with CALEB with the intention of ripping through the weak PAC12. Disaster struck 2022 Oklahoma, a seven loss season with the only highlight of beating OK St in Norman, they also played FSU tight in a bowl game. 2023 rolls around, and Oklahoma is back to their 2 loss form...that is, until they met ARIZONA in San Antonio. Again , Arizona isn't very good by PAC standards, Fifita or not. All this doesn't bode well for the rest of the B12 who may have to play UTAH.....that's the reason so many pundits are predicting the UTES to run through the B12 schedule. I dont think it's even the UTES claiming this, it's not their style. They prefer to keep fairly quiet(unless its BYU), and TCB.

Why would Rice-Eccles Stadium be the hardest place to play in the B12?!? I've looked up some numbers and looked at pix of the stadium. I like the look of Utah's stadium. Rice-Eccles seats 51,444 and record crowd is 53,644. Bill Snyder Family Stadium seats 50,000+ and record crowd is 53,811. I call this equal, +/-. But noticed one big difference from The Bill and Rice-Eccles. Rice-Eccles is a bowl with no upper level, or at least the pix I saw didn't show an upper level. The seats in The Bill are closer to the field due to an upper level and this height helps keep the noise in the stadium and aimed at the field. This set up helps Arrowhead keep the Crown as the loudest NFL stadium. Maybe AZ can make the first comparison between Rice-Eccles and The Bill as far as places hard to play at. I'll let the other B12 fans defend their stadiums. The only one who may have a hard time this year is KU playing in Arrowhead while their stadium is almost completely rebuilt. IF KU can fill Arrowhead, then this will be the hardest place to play this year! Welcome to the B12!

I'm a Utah fan - season ticket holder.
No, Utah is not going to "dominate" the conference. Yes, a FEW of our loudmouth fans on social media are saying that Utah will dominate the conference. I say a FEW because it is an extremely SMALL percentage of our fanbase. These Utah "fans" are trolls - they have been trolling BYU fans back and forth for a decade or more, fueled by their hatred of the state of Utah, or it's conservative politics, or hatred of the sponsoring church of BYU, or whatever - and therefore, they really aren't Utah fans since they are trolls first, and "fans" second (or third).
I get that they are probably sick and tired of BYU fans claiming superiority over Utah when BYU has one win in the last ten games. And I get that these Utah "fans" are probably tired of being treated by many in the state (mostly BYU faithful) as "sinners", "trailer trash" (a common phrase used to describe all Utah fans on CougarBoard) or whatever - hence why they troll so much. Still, these Utah "fans" are trolls regardless of the reasons they are trolling. The overwhelming 99.999% of Utah's fanbase is relatively quiet online, and are not like these trolls at all.
With that said, I think Utah is set up quite well to compete in the XII - most XII fans already realize that. But, according to Vegas odds, even if Utah is the favorite, it is a very slight favorite, and any of the favorites to win the conference - including Utah - has at best, a 20% to 25% chance of winning the conference. Therefore, these Utah "fans" who are trolling are gambling - they have, statistically, about a 75% to 80% chance of being wrong. But they are just trolls, so they don't care if they end up being wrong.
Good luck to all teams in the conference - except BYU - they can have bad luck! (Just kidding you know.)

The Pac-12 has not been a tough conference for the last 5-10 years. Arizona was good last year, bad for years before that. Stanford has been bad for 5 years. UCLA mostly mediocre lately, some good years. Arizona St. mixed years. California, not good for an extended time. Colorado? Yeah, right. Being one of the top 2-3 schools in the conference hasn't been hard. Meanwhile, Utah has lost 5 bowl games in a row. Yeah, big deal to make there to begin with, but you don't lose 5 in a row and say you're going to dominate the new conference, which also happens to be a significantly tougher conference. The weekly grind is going to be a lot harder. Oh, and one of those bowl losses was to a Big 12 team....well, a former Big 12 team, but Texas was Big 12 at the time.

If anything, just remember this: Utah basically needed a miracle to beat lowly Baylor last year.

With 3rd and 4th string QBs, starting TE and RBs out, on the road against a team that they hadn’t played before, and in 120 degree heat. I could go on.
Oregon only beat Texas Tech by the skin of their teeth. Oregon only lost to the natty runner up twice last season and barely each game. Most people thought that OU would beat UW the second time. Was Oregon a bad team?
UW barely beat ASU, (a team that Utah beat 63-3) last season on a pick-six, not scoring an offensive touchdown that game. They went on to beat Big XII champion Texas, and team whom handed Alabama their only loss at home.
Alabama won the game against a middling Auburn team on a Hail Mary on 4th and 31. Alabama, the team whom beat Georgia, owner of the longest winning streak in CFB history in the SEC CCG. Was Alabama a bad team?
You get the point. Teams actually have to play the games on Saturday, and it doesn’t matter who is better on paper. There are many factors that play into things. We’ll see how Baylor fares against a 85-95% Utah team at RES this season against the 50% Utah team that played BU last year in Waco.

Utah wasn't a dominant force in the Pac 12. They will be the same in the Big 12. They can't keep a QB healthy to save their lives. And he is a really good QB. They will be competitive. That's it. The Big 12 top to bottom. Is much more physical than the Pac 12 was. It would be really tough to pick a front runner at this point.

They are coming from a very very weak Pac 12 conference. I don't think Pac 12 is any better than the ACC. If you play very weak teams then dumb people is going to think they are very good.

I don't think the Big XII will have a team to dominate it, I believe its to competitive, and will be won by a different team more often than not!

Utah is a great program!! Will they dominate the Big XII? No! They will be in the mix, and will pretty much always will be a tough out! But they aren't "the class of the Big XII", they are just a great addition to a conference that is on the rise in my opinion! Also, Mr. Klatt, don't sleep on Morgantown... 😉.. And all the talk about Utah going to the ACC is whatever to me, we won't miss what we never knew, and the Big XII will be just fine!! Also, I think it would be funny if they shun the Big XII for the ACC, and when the big dogs leave for greener pastures and the ACC falls apart, the Big XII takes teams from the ACC, they leave Utah out and let em go to the AAC, or go independent. 😂 Yes, Utah has done well the last 10 yrs or so, but I'm one of the people that Couz mentioned that thinks the Big XII was superior to the Pac, and Utah wouldn't have that record if they were in the Big XII, there would be a lot more loses!! But that's just my opinion!! Im ALL IN on the Mighty Mountaineers this season, and truly believe this is the yr we FINALLY make the Big XII championship... And dare I say, win it!! 😁 LET'S GOOOOOOO 🏈🏀⚾🇺🇸
