  • August 13, 2024 - Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) and the Asia Society India Center host an expert discussion exploring key questions following the resignation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after weeks of intense and deadly nationwide protests. Now, with an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the helm, the country faces significant uncertainty and the coming months will be critical. Can the interim government help restore law and order in Bangladesh? What does the future hold for its democracy? And how will these developments impact the region and the broader global community?
Speakers include Sreeradha Dutta, professor of International Affairs at OP Jindal Global University and author of ‘Bangladesh on a New Journey - Moving Beyond Regional Identity’; Michael Kugelman, director of the Wilson Center's South Asia Institute and author of Foreign Policy’s weekly South Asia Brief; Sara Hossain, professor of practice at the School of Law, Gender, and Media at SOAS and partner at the law firm of Dr. Kamal Hossain and Associates; and Shafqat Munir, senior fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies. Farwa Aamer, director of South Asia Initiatives at ASPI, moderates the conversation. (51 min., 4 sec.)

When she is saying 'all walks of life participated', it means from university students to school kids of grade 6, from public school to elite private schools, from kids from madrasas to girls from rich English medium schools, from poor moms to high class housewives and working women, from actresses to singers, social influencers, from NRB labors to people working in high salaries abroad. Young people, inspired by the sacrifice of Abu Sayeed, faced the bullets with sticks and stones only. No foreign money can buy such spirit and motivations. Why they participated? because Hasina was killing kids, shooting people, shooting children form helicopters. USA, UN were just watching closely doing nothing to stop killings, Indian hypocrite media was silent, Pakistan were busy with their own issues.. China was praising Hasina.

We are looking from outside and to us it looks like, BD was doing well economically, its GDP was better than India therefore we thought this protest was totally political and inorganic specially when Sheikh Haseena removed the 30% freedom fighter quota, the protests stopped and then started again after a week. Also, you should listen to the BD journalist Shoaib Chaudhary I think who is close to BNP and he said that this protest was organised by the son of Khaaleda zia in London.
Whatever it is, India only wants a stable govt which can control the jammat e islami and rohingyas because it increases terr0 rism and refugees in India. Other than that we dont care who you make your PM.

Insightful discussion. However, in my observation as a Bangladeshi is ... Sheikh Hasina's government has been criticized for making bilateral agreements with India that many Bangladeshis believe unfairly favored India. This perception is tied to the belief that, facing declining popularity and limited Western support, Hasina relied heavily on India's backing to stay in power. As a result, many in Bangladesh feel their country's sovereignty was compromised. To improve relations, India needs to treat Bangladesh as an equal partner and seek mutually beneficial agreements. The current approach, including Indian media's portrayal of these issues, risks further alienating the Bangladeshi public.

Hindu Bengalis from India feel similarly about Bangladeshis - they are in every state in India, get voter cards from corrupt politicians and join their muslim brothers in India always vote against the right wing, development oriented BJP - thereby keeping different states backward, such as West Bengal. • @HRC294
      @HRC294 28 днів тому +17

Which agreement was not mutually beneficial?
      1. In the land swap, India lost land to Bangladesh.
      2. India and Indian companies have invested in the textile sector. Bangla textiles depend on Indian cotton. India facilitates all of this. Not only this we started a land port at Petrapole near Kolkata.
      3. India provides 20% of the total electricity requirement for Bangladesh at the same rate as it does to states in India. Basically, Bangladesh gets the same rate as the states in India.
      4. India in association with Russia is helping Bangladesh build its 1st Nuclear power plant, which is going against the wishes of the United States. WHICH IS A BIG DEAL.
      5. Apart from this India provides a plethora of special privileges for Bangladeshis. So many Bangladeshi students study in Indian universities.
If Bangladeshis still feel that India does not treat Bangladesh fairly then they must introspect. You cannot blame the Indian govt. for Indian media. Indian media has a mind of its own and it will speak it freely.
We understand that you are angry that Hasina was supported by India(both Congress and BJP at the center) but that cannot be used to falsify facts and state that India has made unfair agreements with BD.
I again ask which agreement/policy of India is not mutually beneficial?

These Bangladesh elites were sleeping for the last 10 to 15 years and have woke now riding on the piggyback of the students protest who themselves have been protesting for the removal of quota system alone and the intellectuals with the elite have used this protest to overthrow a govt with western help. B'Deshi intellectuals are shifting the blame from them to India, how is India responsible if B'Desh haven't strengthened their judiciary, election commission, public service commission, and police. If India had intervened then the ruling party will say India is interfering in internal matters.
Every sovereign country deals with head of other sovereign country, otherwise how would you deal and make contacts with people and encourage business, tourism, medical tourism etc. Does the panelists mean Indian Govt should deal with opposition before signing any contract or agreement, is this how things work with democracy. Indian high commission would have had contacts with Bangladesh opposition parties but wouldn't have declared it in open as the Bangladesh politics is so vendetta driven.
India also does not allow Western nations to interfere in its internal matters and very staunchly guards and defends it, so how could India comment on internal matters of other countries if it isn't concerning the Indians.
B'DESHI elites say India must have people to people contacts, then I would say they must look at India Pakistan relationship especially people contact and this is how a frozen people to people contact relationship looks like. India virtually hardly gives any visas to Pakistanis until unless it is a medical emergency. Just look what happened During the cricket worldcup in India, hardly any visas were given to Pakistanis, roughly 50 Pakistanis got visa including journalists and those who were given visas were mostly Pakistani Americans. Did India do the same with Bangladesh, has India frozen the visas for Bangladesh to stop people to people contact, in fact as many 1.6 million visas has been given to B'DESHI and they are given seats world renowned institutions like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), so wat r they talking about.
If Bangladesh wants to follow mobocracy type democracy then good luck. Let us wait for the next mobocracy revolution to happen after this and the elites will again say it is such a beautiful thing to happen to Bangladesh.

@@AjitKumar-lo9yu Why u write an essay but can't write the name of our country properly?
Social media are being manipulated by unknown parties to brainwash and agitate youths of both states. Nowadays, Bangadeshis want west bengal & 7 sisters. Indians want total Bangladesh.
And most of the talking about this are done by those people who are short-sighted, very young in age, zero idea about geo-politics & global conspiracy and they're active on social media 24/7.
People of these demographics on both countries are the new variable o global politics. We've recently seen that these students have uprooted a whole govt. But, make sure u understand the fact that these youth were used as a weapon. They had zero idea that they're being a goat who would be slaughtered. This geopolitical game is nowusing the borderless, uncontrolled cyberspace of all nation in the world. Theyhave the AI to set anything they want for the people to believe or agitate.
General students' emotions were used to uproot to govt. The govt. surely had corruption in noticable terms. But they have done a great deal for the people and the students.
But peopleare ungrateful. I have had lot to explain but it' difficult to type long paragraph in my phn.
So basically what I wanna say is, we should educate youths about consoiracies and they being used as animals for slaughter. They should calm down. They should keep friendly attitude with neighboring countries. We've thousands of relative on both the countries. We should helo each other. If they want war, rhen they should remember that the war would destroy both countries economy and jobs for good.

Bharat is not on good terms with its neighbouring countries. In the north, there is a hostile China. In the west, there is a hostile Pakistan. In between India and China, there is a growing anti-India sentiment in Nepal. In the Indian ocean, the Maldives has led an India out campaign. So, it is crystal clear that India is alone in its immediate neighbourhood. Now, China is ready to provide India's all neighbours with hi-tech weapons to contain India's hegemonic activities. We, Bangladeshis, have no trust over Indian analysts. As India is a country that kept backing autocratic Hasina up, Bangladeshis are tired of India's interference. If India comes up with any misadventure regarding Bangladesh, our BD people will not sit idle and give lethal reply to India like the resistance movement HAMAS.

Look, India has been our biggest neighbor for the last 50 years but India didn't act like a good neighbor, pls don't take my words for it pls do your research. In 1972 Farakka was opened for testing for a few days which by now made Bangladesh a desert. We have been paying Adani 400 core per month regardless we use the electricity, only Taka 40 tariff per ton for transit thru BD, we are 4th largest remittance, 3rd largest trade partner, #1 in tourism yet India supports Tyrants to advance their agenda who rubber stamp India's wishes. Have you ever heard that one country will fill-up its naturally flowing river with pipes and dirt to serve India's 7 sisters. Just a few years back to balance trade we requested a list of 1600 items and only 6 was approved. Our borders are more dangerous than the Gaza/Israel border, During covid we paid advance for vaccines but that wasn't delivered. We can list 1000 more such examples.
In 1971 India also gained by defusing tension from its east. It is in both our interests to keep good relationships but India is just talks and Takes. If India thinks they don't need Bangladesh, we will be happy if you shut down all trades and seal the border. Arguably the largest democracy should focus on building relationships with the ppl of Bangladesh rather than with its Dictator's who stay in power serving India's unfair interests. India's Raw should stop mending Bangladesh's domestic issues.
Our minorities, our brothers and we will protect them with our lives, yes during tension some ppl try to play the race card but it's under control. We don't talk about gross minority treatments that take place within india.
In order to become a superpower one's heart needs to be like one, I think Indians should focus on its public health issues so we don't have to see ppl pooping by train tracks.

If 8000 opposition leaders (including minority Hindu opposition leaders) are in jail for no reason and then every institution works for Sheikh Hasina, then how could the opposition take part in an election. I voted for the Awami league in 2008 and I can't stand Jamat or Tarek Zia but Sheikh Hasina destroyed every institution in Bangladesh. I can't stand any political party now just like most Bangladeshi people.

The Bangladesh problem is mainly India's creation. India failed to understand the consequences of its active participation in engineering three consecutive elections in favor of Hasina. Hasina helped India's exploitation of Bangladesh. I hope India can realize its foreign policy blunder. But there is no sign of it. The BJP's IT Cell-inspired UA-cam channels are still spreading venomous hatred and contempt against the people of Bangladesh without the slightest hint of understanding the reality. Some senior Indian Analysts of Foreign Policy proudly commented that Indian policy was not to export democracy in the neighborhood. So they tried to export the policy of dominion and got the result.

Bangladesh didn’t need to spent much of its GDP on defense because only India mostly surrounds it. You don’t know shit about if India wanted to grab Bangladesh by the neck. India always helped Bangladesh but to grow. But you got a US Nobel laureate puppet. Though dictator but Hasina was smartly balancing between India and China. Now see where Bangladesh future goes. Michael's delivery is the best. He sounds well read, well informed, and very analytical.
Dutta was good in her first part of the speech. But her minority issue is false. That's a propaganda. Plus, she was speaking as an Indian instead of a neutral observer.
Shafqat Munir looks like reading from a script. poor delivery in both the first and second part. He doesn't contextualize things he was describing.

India's position in the democracy index is not satisfactory though the country is termed as the world's largest democracy. The minorities in India are regularly marginalised and demonised by the ruling hindu supremacist BJP& RSS. India’s neighbours don’t have amicable relationship with it. Bangladesh's democracy was spoiled by India’s stooge Hasina who has been popular as the Lehendhup Doorji of Bangladesh. If India tries to interfere more and uses its geographic location to destabilise Bangladesh, the hindu supremacist India will have to pay an exorbitant price too.

Although I have utmost respect for sovereign nations yet it bewilders me to think of a country which has never experienced a healthy functioning democracy in its 50 odd years since independence can afford such luxuries. Build your state, elect a democratic government then run it for a decade or two.. when you achieve that please come down to Delhi or Mumbai to lecture us..
On the point of BJP/RSS and Hindu extremists, you may not have noticed but not a single instance of tensions occured within India while your own people in BD were busy desecrating temples in the name of your new found democratic freedom..So chill..you have a long way to go yet..

It's funny how the indians are defending their country when it comes to attack on their minorities 😂😂
      Seriously???
The CM of UP demolished houses of Muslim people even before they were proven guilty, people have been beaten to death for eating cow meat, the Karnataka govt. had banned wearing hijab. People have been killed in India just because they refused to say jay Shree ram or bande ma taram bla bla.
Just before last election, current pm of India was giving hate speech against Muslim. Almost all the BJP politician openly demean and speak against Muslim.
And coming to the attack on minority in my country, the Hindus that have been mostly attacked were Awami league leaders.(Mostly). Still I don't support these attack, and almost all the people of my country have condemned these attack. We have been guarding the Hindu temple too.. still some instances happened because there was no law and order, nor there was any police. Think about your country for three days without any police, or other law enforcing agents. But indian media has been exaggerating it.
