Just read an article where his neighbors in El Paso described him as quiet, humble and nice. He lived in a normal neighborhood and being as he didn't drive, would walk to Albertson's and Kmart down the road. Seems like such a cool guy.
I'm writing from Italy, Rome. When i was a child I always watched the Jeffersons on TV. Now that i have 35 years i still watch the jefferson every day on my Pc, in the evening before sleeping. It's never boring to see them!! I really love George Jefferson!!
I really Loved that Man and i never met him. I saw him once in L.A. outside a wine store back in the early 80's on Westwood Blvd near Westwood. He was using a public pay phone. I was star struck, speechless and smiling but I managed to say "Hi". He greeted me and smiled. I will never forget it. I was 20yrs old. Im 50 now. Thanks for all the Years....: (
Sherman Hemsley Your characters on Amen and the Jeffersons reminds me of myself it was a true pleasure to watch your shows growing up as a kid. RIP Thanks for making us smile and taking the pressure of life off of us.
I think his character was stolen in "Martin". Martin used to slam doors in people's faces too, was also rude to ppl. And much like George he loved Gina just like George loved Weezie. RIP George Jefferson
@wondermanu1975 Me too... I love me some George Jefferson. Sherman Hemsley will always be known to me as George. I remember when I was 5 yrs old back in "75"... and the Jeffersons just aired on Tv. It was a kid in my old neighborhood in Ohio, who use to idolize George so much that he use to bop like George whenever he walked... we use to call him George Jefferson. lol!
Is that why "Henry" was in about one season of AITF and then, along came George? They were waiting for Sherman to be free to do the show? Never heard that, but it makes sense.
@Iricardo don't forget the following, also from All in the Family.... *Character Name: "Maude" *S.O.? "Maude." Maude has a maid named Florida who eventually leaves the Findley's home. *Character Name: "Florida Evans" *S.O? "Good Times."
He was born to play that role.
One of the best characters in American television history! Sherman Hemsley is a legend!
RIP Mr. Hemsley. You and Isabell are both are finally in the deluxe apartment in the sky.

It is amazing that he truly didn't like the characterization of George considering he played that part like no other could of. He was truly gifted.
Sherman Hemsley is a National Treasure
