So many Christmas goodies today, and so little time! But I had to listen to this one. There is a sadness to this one, but it is a beautiful song, and what can you say about the Hollywood icon Judy Garland? One of the loveliest voices and her vibrato makes this an emotional performance. I don't know the movie Meet Me in St. Louis well enough, but I know she is singing this to comfort a young girl in the scene. Maybe someone out there can fill in the scene for us and give us the proper context for the song. Merry Christmas to you, Matt, and to everyone following his channel and beyond. I wish you all love, peace and happiness! 🎄🎅🦌And a New Year filled with MUSIC! 😃
My mom loved Judy. I did see this movie, but don't remember much. Reading what said below sounds right. She was a troubled soul. It is one of the best versions,IMHO. Although James Taylor to me, does a really good version as well. Very melancholy, but sweet.❤
You are a kind and sensitive man and it's good the world didn't have its way with you - as it did to so many others - like Judy. Sometimes it may seem like a shining star - but it's anything but....in truth.
It’s this one and Karen’s merry Christmas darling, and even bings white Christmas that are must hears for the holidays for me.. longing, nostalgia and hope for homecomings
Hi Matt, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas day, apologies for my late greetings. This is my favourite Christmas song, as opposed to Christmas carol, that title would fall to two that I cannot split, 'In The Bleak Midwinter' and 'The Coventry Carol'. As has been said already, this song has a melancholic tinge that makes it stand out from others (as do my favourite carols) and links it to her sad and troubled life, similarly with her two other stand out songs 'Over The Rainbow' and 'The Man That Got Away' (You could definitely review the latter). I have seen the movie 'Meet Me In St. Louis' many times and rate it very highly, along with 'A Star Is Born' alongside the late, great James Mason.
Thank you, Nigel! And there might be a Tori Christmas reaction before the season is fully over. And regular reactions will be coming back soon. I hope you've had happy holidays, my friend!
In the film the Father has just got a job promotion so they will be moving to New York and leaving their lives in St. Lois behind. This song is sung to her 5 year old sister on Christmas Eve. So it is a song tinged with melancholy and sadness, but also optimism, saying let's deal with the present, think about the future later. Apparently the original lyrics had to be changed as they were too downbeat. A wonderful singer, her voice often betrays her own sadness and you can hear that here. Judy had a complicated and tragic life. First put on the stage at the age of 2, later a Hollywood starlet made insecure about her looks and talent, fed pills and kept on constant diets, to keep her thin. Her illness was addiction and she died of an unintentional overdose in 1969, aged 47. She was a gay icon, though less so now but in gay parlance people still refer to other gay men as a "friend of Dorothy", or to a good friend as "my good Judy".
Happy Christmas Matt 🎄. This is a lovely, emotional song. I watched Meet Me in St. Louis on tv yesterday. The song never fails to bring tears to my eyes 😢. See you tomorrow for Hana Yori Dango 😊.
Queen of the wide vibrato. Stunning!
A sad but hopeful Christmas Carol, her voice was very soothing!

You are very brave reacting to these. The way the horns accentuate those lower registers...

Merry Christmas, Dawn! I hope you're having a wonderful holiday. And you're right, this one is very emotional, sweet and vulnerable at the same time.
