    Hi Carole,

    Hi Carole! I've been tempted into several Love Notions patterns over time and unfortunately, some are hits and some are like the Evanston Vest. It is frustrating but you made it work and you have a quick grab vest to keep you warm. I have a quick grab sweater in my sewing room. It is too big, was a toile and made out of very bright orange and purple fleece I only had small amounts of. LOL. But I think it is my most worn Me Made item right now. Too funny. Have a great week!

      I really appreciate your comment, thank you! As you say, the items I have made and thought I would hardly wear...I wear the most. How funny you wear your fun sweater as well. I have only done a couple of L N patterns which have been ok, nothing too special. I know a lot of people have great success with them though. 🧵😊

    Hi Carole! I actually love your Evanston vest. It is plain… but… I imagine it over a printed fabric with long billowy sleeves. I think it looks so pretty over the top you’re wearing. I have the pattern but, I haven’t even put it together yet😮
    I will go watch Izzy’s now. Everything you make looks lovely on you. Thank you for sharing! ❤ Diann

    Interesting Carole, especially that your Juki wouldn't do the button holes as they seem to be able to do pretty much anything. Anyway it turned out well and is a perfect layering piece. Absolutely love the refashioned jumper.

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  3 дні тому +1

      Hi Ann, I don't know what was wrong with the Juki, it just wouldn't feed that material through and continually sewed in the same space. It was so spongy and thick though I wasn't surprised. As you say, I didn't think I would have had a problem but as I wasn't overly concerned about buttons I gave it a miss! Thanks so much for watching 🧵😊

    Hi, Carole! It’s a great color to wear over something of color! Maybe to calm down the color or contrast/complement the top/shirt underneath. Odd placement for pockets🤔I’d tossed those too.

    Hi Carole, the vest looks cozy. A couple of suggestions to jazz it up, if you aren't quite sick of it, yet. You could put plastic snaps (poppers) down the front and then sew large buttons of your color choice down the front for a vertical line. The second one, if you choose to leave it open, is to embroider some floral or other design down a part of the front bands. You could try various different needles in your Juki to do the buttonholes - Jesrey, Stretch, Universal, Microtex, Embroidery and see what happens. Or just wear it as it is. It's cute. ☃ Bernadette

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  4 дні тому

      Hi Bernadette, thanks so much for your suggestions. Whilst I tried different buttonholes, I didn't think to try different needles? The fabric just wouldn't move in the machine sewing just in one spot, so annoying! I must admit the thought of trying to get poppers through that thick sponginess fills me with fear. If I don't like the fact it is open I may even just hand sew the buttonholes as I have before. Next time I have this issue I will certainly try different needles, thank you 🧵😊

    Carole, I just watched Izzy’s video. I shared with her some of the issues I had with the Evanston vest. The oversized armholes were an issue for me too. Yours actually looks very nice. If you still wanted buttons just sew them through both sides of the band and forget the button holes altogether. I love a nice vest. It does seem fabric is key for this pattern.

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  5 днів тому

      Thanks so much for watching and your comments. I did think of sewing up the buttons like you suggested but I thought really I would probably only wear it open anyway so didn't want to waste my time on that. I have done exactly that on other garments in the past...and blouses!! We weren't the only ones that had problems with the armholes by the sounds of it. 🧵😊

    Hi Carole, the vest is perfect for just a layering piece. That fabric looks like rib knit, which is horrible to sew garments with. I only use it for bands and cuffs. I tried to make a pullover vest with rib knit and it turned out big enough for my husband! That was it for me. I like the white one better, it seems to be more fitted. I never like those dropped shoulder vests , but the white one is pretty. I would wear it myself. I think that other one would look better if the arm bands were left off and the edges just turned under, but that’s just me. I always make a test garment of a new to me pattern just to see how it fits. It has saved me so much aggravation. Take care😊

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  5 днів тому +1

      Hi Sue. That fabric wasn't a Rib Knit just a super soft, spongy kind of knit which was quite thick. It is perfect for the garment but just a nightmare to sew...or press! You are correct about the Simplicity one, the shape is more flattering as Izzy has said, the pattern seemed to have been rushed so lacked some of the normal details. Funny you should mention about not having the arm bands as yes, it did look so much better without but hemming that fabric would not have worked at all! Doing test garments is something I rarely do as I don't like wasting time or fabric unless the garment is for a special occasion. Most of the time no one sees what I wear anyway 😂. Have a great week and thanks for tuning in 🧵😊

    It's a nice garment for an extra layer, but I do occasionally despair with some of these pattern designers. I've seen pockets up under the armpit before! With your bottom band, did you overlock it? Might be a case of altering your differential feed to avoid the waviness. I did manage to do buttonholes in stretch - in fact I am making the same garment again, a cardigan for hubby - and apart from adding interfacing into the band, I have the option on my sewing machine for a stretch buttonhole. Worked quite well.

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  5 днів тому +1

      Hi Diane, thanks so much for your comments. Re the 'wobble' I did alter the overlocker slightly but I think it is the bulky seam being overlocked that just kind of drags on the seam. It isn't as bad as some I have done but really I should have used my cover stitch machine instead to seal it all down. I wasn't too worried though as I knew I would never wear the vest outside of the home! Honestly that fabric was so thick and spongy, cosy but a nightmare to sew. 🧵😊

    Well, it's kind of like oatmeal - nothing wrong with it, but no, it's not exciting. I saw Izzy's version as well and know she was not happy. I was thinking a cable fabric would make it more interesting, and then you brought out the vest from last year and you can really see the difference having an interesting texture and some more shaping makes. I don't do well getting buttonholes in knit fabric and usually just skip them because I wouldn't wear the item buttoned up anyway. And yes, my Dad did have a beige cashmere wool vest just like it 😄!

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  4 дні тому

      Oh yes Mary, Oatmeal is a far better way of describing it than beige! You made an interesting point about the texture of fabric making it more interesting as the L N versions I did like had exactly that!

    I have that simplicity pattern.. Made longer view A with a hemband like B. Fabric was a weird rib like black lace with fake stretch black leather for the V-neck and armband. Very goth. Not my style at all. Don't know what I was thinking. I've bought the Evanston and planned to make the longer open view in purple sweater knit, but after watching both of your videos about the pattern I've decided to remake the simplicity view C , hopefully it won't turn out as ugly as the example on the envelope the model is wearing.

    This item could be a fashion statement depending on fabric used. Yours is fine but the fabric is drab . . . which makes it versatile. It looks great over your green jumper and could be used to tone down a lively print when necessary. Vests are useful for more than warmth, I think. They often “finish” an outfit serving as a slimming accessory.
    I never use the patterns band “suggestion” bc the stretch of the fabric determines the length of the band.
    I also avoid PDF patterns. Hate them actually. I didn’t even like cut and paste in kindergarten! So I’d choose the other pattern too.

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  5 днів тому

      Thanks so much for all your comments. I suppose I chose the colour as I knew it would blend with most garments. As you say, it could be a fashion statement if it was in the right fabric. I am not a fan at all of PDF's but I always get a lot of comments if I admit my hatred for them 😂. Sometimes though it is good for me to step out of my comfort zone and try new patterns and companies. Thanks for watching 🧵😊

It takes years to build a good reputation and minutes to ruin it'. They may have had a deadline, but this was a mistake. Because you are an experienced sewist, you were able to make it work 👍

      Thanks so much for your comment Nancy. A fair few people have made this pattern with success apart from a couple of tweaks so maybe we are giving a bad impression of it. Izzy who is more familiar with LN did say it felt like it had been rushed. As you say, it is better not to do this and take your time in developing new patterns, no wonder it was discounted! 🧵😊

    You did a lovely job on your vest, Carol. I’ve only ever owned one vest and it was a navy colour. I did wear it but not a lot. Between you and Izzy you gave excellent comments for people who might try the pattern. Loved your video. Thank you.👍😁
