Keep an eye on those chafe guards. Plastic over your rigging will hold moisture. You will start to get corrosion damage. I would suggest replacing lines. Much cheaper then replacing the rigging. Great videos. I really enjoy you content. Thanks for making that VPN ad so fun. Great job!

I enjoy watching your videos. Great to see your confidence building on the longer sails, which will be good for the Atlantic passage. Good mix of content and humour, well done!
NB: just one technical point, a tri-colour light can only be used when sailing, and when the steaming light is on, you should use deck level nav lights, as the masthead (steaming) light should be positioned at least 1m above the sidelights.(Col Regs Annex 1, 2(d)). There is a good reason for this, so that other vessels can correctly identify you (e.g. a red light over white, or green over white are types of fishing vessel).

hey guys another great video, first tip wrangle those gloves out of the bin and just give them a good wash with soapy water, and as for the lure by the time it drags for 30 seconds it will have washed any accumulated toxins away. The toads are toxic but you really have to eat them for them to be deadly, even grabbing them without gloves to dehook only needs a good wash after to be safe. cheers

Good idea. Vinegar is a must inboard (liters of it). If someone gets stung by a jellyfish it numbs the pain and often gets rid of the pain; asap. This is what they use on box jellyfish stings as well as first aid as well.

@@TeuluTribe Hi Zach. Back in the 1990's, Marmite changed it, in the hope they could get more people to buy it. The result was, lots of people who liked it the way it had been since they were children, stopped buying it, because making it 'more acceptable' to the haters, made it unacceptable for the lovers. The original stuff was 'solid' and you could take a precise amount out of the jar on the end of your knife, so you could have it as strong or weak as you wanted. The new version was more fluid and it has never been the same since then. Occasionally, they bring out a version which is nearer to the original and better than the current 'standard' version. At present, they have a XO 'Extra Old' version, which is very close to the original, but a lot stronger in flavour. They use the Yeast from Strong Beer brewing. I prefer it to the standard version, but it's still not quite to my liking. That's the trouble with living long enough to remember 'The Good Old Days'... one of the penalties of being a 'Baby Boomer'. Still, one advantage of you not liking it, is that Becka doesn't have to share it with you, so all the more for her... for which, I'm sure, she's very grateful. ;-)

Good watching you both. Whenever I switch the engine off and am under sail I put the engine in reverse gear to stop the shaft spinning. It prevents wear and tear on the joints and gear box. Oil is not circulating whenthe engine is off and if the prop is allowed to spin it can cause damage.

    • @matui6983

If its a hydraulic gearbox it will be damaged if the shaft and reduction gears are left to spin as the oil-pump which is driven by input shaft will not be turning.
If its a mechanical box which yours probably is being on the back of a Sole/Mitsubishi engine then it wont have an oil pump, so reduction gears will still be turning but main input shaft wont be. Still not the best situation. Best fix is to lock the shaft in a fixed position.
Can be done by fixing a disc-rotor and caliper to the shaft: complex and expensive. Or a hole can be drilled into the coupling to alow a locking pin to be inserted. Only downside to locking the shaft is when owners forget to unlock the shaft. Folding props are another idea but they can wear very quickly.

Just love this channel and your contageous enthusiasm!! Regarding the shaft, is there any reason for you not to put the gear in reverse while sailing to avoid the shaft and the propeller to spin? Is seems quite noisy. We used to do that in our sailboat, and it makes a huge difference on the noise level.

If you caught Lagocephalus sceleratus - Sennin-fugu - then that may have been a "record". The wiki on the fish documents the Straight of Gibraltar as the westernmost record on a page was last edited on 20 June 2024.

If you leave the gearbox in gear with the engine off, the prop will stop rotating and there'll be less wear on the transmission.

specifically.. leave it in reverse! you do not want it spinning. it wears things thing out and actually slow the boat down more.

We have a sole mini and gearbox in our Konsort and always put in reverse when sailing. No noise or wear and tear but not so hydrodynamic without a folding prop. Lovely episode thanks.

Hi, I am enjoying your videos. Hope you wnot be offended with a couple of suggestions. I would not attach preventer lines to stanchions, only well reinforced strong points like cleats or toe rail. The stanchions will be ripped out.
Is there a reason why you do not put your transmission in reverse when sailing? or use a shaft brake of some sort. On a long journey your bearings will get worn out if you let the prop rotate.
Looking forward to your next trip.

    • @TeuluTribe

Hi Colin. We always welcome suggestions! The lines are only attached to the cleat and the toe rails when not in use and the end of the boom when they are in use 😊

Hi Teulu. Your 'ticking' prop-shaft. Does it turn under sail, even with the engine turned off? i.e. Does it have a clutch to allow it to spin freely, when not being driven by the engine? You may want to invest in a propeller which has folding vanes, which streamline it and stops the prop spinning, when not being driven by the motor. This also reduces drag under sail and also reduces wear on the shaft and bearings. Just a thought.

Thanks for the advice Russ! At the end of this season we are hoping to instal a permanent fix for the issue, such as a folding prop 😊

Put your gearbox into reverse when sailing (motor off), remember to return to neutral before restarting motor. You will likely damage your gearbox more by letting it "free-wheel" than by putting it into reverse. I've had not issues over a few decades of doing this.
