Geo Armor Kishin Corp Startup Sequence

- This is from a fairly obscure anime, one of the first two anime movies I ever rented. (The other was Ranma 1/2, which my daughter is still obsessed with).
I just love the insane detail of this startup sequence... the manual cranking, the engines spinning up to speed, vacuum tubes coming up to temperature...
All a very solid 1940s aesthetic for a giant robot.
I am a Japanese.
At that time, I rented this anime at a video rental store and watched it.
This scene is my favorite.
The background music is cool and I sometimes want to rewatch this scene.
In Japanese, the contact is called "Konterku!" .
This is the terminology of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and when a Japanese person shouts "contact" in English, it becomes "KONTERKU! .
I saw the English dubbed version for the first time, and it started up!(KIDOH!) becomes "Engage" was interesting.
funny enough, the English voices are just awful to my ears. takes all the fun and excitement outta it. glad you find it interesting at least www
Vacuum tubes, power supplied by what looks like hand started turboprop generators... Beautiful.
It works for the Steam punk-era but in our time, this is shit. Just attach a miniature fusion reactor. Our 21st century is able to make it, just pour the resources.
The bursting of those vacuum tubes was concerning... But, *YES,* nonetheless, it was magnificent.
This was set in an alternate WWII. So the tech level is more dieselpunk.
@@Evangelion543 This isn't set in the future..
@@javierpatag3609 given their likely role as fuses i'd say they should just change how they've assembled their grid XD
Dieselpunk mecha, very nice...especially the fusion of anime styling..mostly when you see dieselpunk mecha they're more 'walking tank' than 'humanoid robot'
I also like how absolutely 80s it was with both the colouration...and the fact that the pilot uniform for no reason has to include large shoulder pads.
Whelp, I sure do miss this kind of super/real robot anime nowadays, have some launching/combining sequences.
You can always feel the tension and excitement whenever see a robot flying out of base/they starting to combining/change form ^^
not to mention the dozen techs, engineers, and ground crew it takes to put it in the sky.
Man, they don't make Mecha anime with this much attention to detail anymore.
Do they even make mecha anime at all, besides Gundam, nowadays. 😂 (😭)
@@dpv007 there's plenty aside from Gundam. Star driver, Darling in the Franxx, Eureka Seven AO, Code Geass Akito the Exiled, Gurren Lagan, Big O, Evangelion...
@@dpv007 depends on how far you want to go back
In modern day you have megaton musashi, sakuga, rumble or ramble garendoll.
Older ones are visions of escaflowne, mazinger z high impact, mazinger z infinity, and mazinger Skl etc.
You mean attention to detail like...
How complicated is it to actually pilot a robot?
How many buttons or many sequences to make the robot do that one thing you want?
Well yeah, I'm not that knowledgeable, but I see your point.
I like Gundam, i do, but sometimes I thinks that Gundam made mechanical system far easier than it should be.
IMHO, One of the Gundam that pays a little bit more attention to show details of the machine, in my opinion is Gundam 08th team, where you can see parts of the actual machine, gears and stuffs, repaired by the pilots, exchanged with other parts because of battle, etc, meaning the robot does wear out from usage, and you see how it get to what it is, by opening it's belly for you to see and fix and operate.
I won't say Gundam Seed series like and the rests are bad, but you rarely see the inside of its stomach, they just tell you "it works".
The beam rifle works, the button works, but you won't see... The beam, from it's cartridge, to the chamber, to trigger pushing, to where it's ignited or pushed or whatever, you just know the beam is shot. Even the transformation sequences is pretty fast, you just see it suddenly change. I know that maybe they designed it to be fast in transforming, but pls... Not everyone have a boxer eyes or something so everyone can see every detail of what's moving to make what. It was at this type of sequence, where they should use slow motion for the viewer.
If it was old school ones, i recommend Gao Gai Gar, a super robot series, with a robot that somehow doing unbelievable feats.
But... at the very least you can see the details, which part of the machine starts doing what it claims it's doing
I'd argue not many mecha franchise with robots of this size are able to truly create a lore and sense of the scale and size these robots would have. The most recent thing to date was Pacific Rim the first movie in the first opening scene. I truly enjoy it when screen writers and directors go through the motion of showing us the intricate engineering and maintenance steps it takes to set these robots up, it really adds to the size and scale of what they are while grounding them to a similar reality to that of how it is to start up and maintain a military jet.
It's always good to find new Mecha anime to add to my list of things to watch. This start-up sequence was just amazing. This wasn't just 'one guy doing it all' type or when you never see the rest of the support staff. Seeing them on the mech as they're finishing tightening bolts and then having to go over checks and other stuff before launch. Plus watching it all be fit together. So glorious.
I feel like this must be what starting an Imperial Titan must be like
I doubt it, it's somewhat similar, but more on the psychokenetic-side. Those world Titans require a human that's linked via the brain & "soul" to operate. Plus the 100 men to operate the damn thing. It's firepower is equal to one frigate class warship.
@@Evangelion543 You forgot spraying scented scared oils and chanting non-stop. All to please the Machine Spirit.
Except with more chanting, incense, WD-40 and duct tape.
Nowhere near enough praying
Back from a time when just getting such a massive complex of mechanical and electrical components to work together was a feat in itself, just the machine turning over was a success that the music stopped.
From the engineer, who cared if the thing actually worked past that point?
Just imagine being the one to have to replace all those vacuum tubes every darn time.
Dang. I like that despite this being a giant robot, all the prep and startup work shown off makes it seem like a more believable, almost tangible machine that could properly exist.
Guess nobody's using _those_ train tracks any time soon. 😆
This clip is the perfect example of why mecha anime was king back in the day. It is everything that is missing from modern day mecha anime. 😊
Modern ‘cartoon’ Pixar/Disney alike😢ALL CGI, NO BRAINER/NO ❤ THE same goes for remake of LOGH/YAMATO…ETC
This runs through my head every morning when I put bread in the toaster and start the coffee machine. “Engage!”
Dieselpunk mecha is something I didn't know I needed
An analog Mech. Outstanding! Im a huge fan of the original Aliens film and seeing all the analog buttons/switches is just so perfect to me.
I dont want to call this some kind of -punk, but it certainly needs its own category.
Already is. It's called "Dieselpunk"
I just call it by what its supposed to be WW2 era, retro. Also I feel analog has a lot more potential than digital
I like that this thing has this much of a ground crew.
Totally agree- that was awesome. I also love how they showed some vacuum tubes blowing on startup. I was in love with this series when it came out and forgot about it until UA-cam blessed me with this clip.
I have the 7-episode OVA. I adore the steampunk vibe this series had.
What Anime is it?

Heroine Jumps from moving car to pilot mecha on train, train stops anyway to allow mecha to safely exit from its original docking position onto land
Why waste time to wait for the train to stop and for her to change before starting up the Mech? Especially if you know that your pilot can make it onto the train while it's moving and that it takes time to get the large machine running and she has to be in it to start it up.
You’re both right. Sounds like a design flaw
@@thisiswhatilike54 I think there was a plot reason why this was happening- but I can’t remember back 30 years ago real well (saw this only 1 time over the course of a comic convention in 92 I think).
But I agree, it seemed like a bit of gratuitous action for the sake of being awesome.
I love how it sounds like a lawnmower in action.
its so *mechanical* i absolutely love it

Fun fact, the U.S. once had rail cars that carried nuclear missiles and were capable of launching them. The intention was to have several nuclear weapons scattered randomly across the country and always moving, to ensure we'd still have nukes to launch if all our missile bases were destroyed. Originally they were disguised as normal cargo cars, but extra-large unmarked cars with no doors are still pretty conspicuous so the design was originally changed to be more conspicuous. Armored personnel cars accompanied it, complete with firing slits and so on. Eventually the program was shut down, in part because it's really easy to protest them. Activist groups would protest and block the rails. The USSR-then-Russia had a similar program, which if I remember correctly lasted longer. I think they have a museum for it.
Anyway, mecha-deploying railroad cars: not that far-fetched! If we accept the mecha anyway.
I feel like this wouldn't fit through standard loading gauge
Wow those dubs while they where still in the car were rough, glad it immediately got better.
I need to watch this especially after becoming interested in working on tube radios.
All that attention to detail and then… is that a two stroke engine I hear powering that Goliath? Putter putter putter putter

The OVA didn't age that well.
Why do you say that? This ova is great, it's better if you watch the sub version as the dub is horrible. The American voice actors just read lines and didn't put emotions into their words unlike their original Japanese voice actors.

I can see why this is one of the more forgetable animes. Techincal squence of this doesn't seem to make sense to me. As other animes of the time did show proper size placement for such things, this one failed to do that, as the mech in question is alot wider and larger then the train shown should have been able to handle. Her pilot suit also seemed alot more modern then the overall anime as well, which made it seem out of place in the long run. Presentation wise overall it's not bad, nice clean polish still those issues I mentioned are things Anime artists seemed to strive for back then, even before and after this was originally released.
It's an old mech....*Shrug* I am just guessing. I do not know the anime to know the true answer.

Alien Defender Geo-Armor: Kishin Corps
I disagree- I remember this well from the 90’s…it was very quirky and different than anything else I had seen at the time. Most other mecha were fantasy or military fiction.
But maybe you’re right and they should have pushed more toward the fantasy aspect so the lack of realistic physics wouldn’t have stood out so much.
They had pressure suits back then, just not for war use. Only sub engineers and cavern explorers would have been using them irl.
The world's tech in this takes a 20years jump, because Germany is invaded by an alien probing force, but they are defeated and captured. Somewhat similar to Harry Turtledove's alt ww2 history series. That's why the mechs are built similar to ships and heavy bombers. The novel this is based on even refers to them as "walking cruisers" during development.
Always hated “giant robot” anime. The weight and the shock/shearing forces would more likely cause the legs to rip apart just from walking, let alone the jumping around and running during a kiaju battle or if said kiaju or enemy mech end up on top of the hero-bot effectively doubling the weight. Even as a little kid I knew this was entirely unfeasible. Better to have some kind of maneuverable tank with a weapons tower mounted on top.
You must be fun at parties
@@DarkEcho32 more annoying than Sheldon Cooper. But not usually at parties, there I’m filming all the stupid drunk people so everyone can laugh at them later.
@@turbopokey that's not something to brag about,it's as pathetic as they are
Most aren’t my cup of tea either- but there are a very few that are enjoyable if you can get past needing them to follow reality. This one was quirky when it came out in the 90’s: space alien monster mecha-blob joins the Axis (swapping Japan and China) in WWII, pure fantasy- but there want anything like it. I don’t think realism was what they were exactly going for so much as to get a real “epic” vibe.
Totally cool if it didn’t do it for ya.
In this case it would work, the legs were specifically contracted to a bridge & rig construction company in the novel
Kitchen thunder!! 😅

Mecha is good, but the dub is horrible.
