I'm a programmer and a gamer and an actor and a writer and a singer, and sometimes I direct short films.
I'm based in Canberra, Australia.
Since Covid has been happening, and stopping a bunch of my normal outlets, I've been trying to put up a music video at least once a week... mostly covers, but sometimes original compositions.

The Last Goodbye
The Last Goodbye
Billy Boyd, 2014
Yes, that Billy Boyd, aka Peregrin "Pippin" Took.
He wrote and recorded this for The Battle of the Five Armies (The Hobbit) and it is played over the end credits.
This is just a lovely song, and I hope you enjoy my rendition.

if I had a million dollars

If I Had a Million Dollars Barenaked Ladies Ed Robertson and Steven Page 1988 This was one of the band's first hits, and had been written and performed by Robertson and Page at a music camp they were both counsellors at. It's a cheerful, bouncy number that I just enjoy. Yes, it's a duet, so there's some multi-tracking shenanigans. I'm quite pleased at how it came out.
Pockets - Belladonna U

This is from the series "Belladonna U" by Tansy Rayner Roberts, with permission of the author. Lyrics; Tansy Rayner Roberts 2023 Music: Robbie Matthews 2024 Belladonna U series: www.goodreads.com/series/284309-belladonna-u This song was by Fake Geek Girl in the books. I do realise I do not closely resemble an indie girl band, but I've done my best. [Verse 1] C Am I saw a girl out walking with a...

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #29 Math Rocks Cat Faber 2021 I actually recorded this one earlier in the year. It was my contribution to "Cover to Cover" which is available from Bandcamp: filkersongswap.bandcamp.com/album/cover-to-cover-filker-song-swap-vol-1-2 As a long time player of tabletop RPGs, I can say that this song is the complete and utter truth and it's time someone knew. According to Ca...
Your Wildest Dreams

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #28 Your Wildest Dreams Moody Blues 1986 This Justin Hayward penned number is lighter and more poppy than traditional Moody Blues output. The guitar group I have been playing with has discovered we like other things Justin Hayward has done, so I went on a bit of an explore and rediscovered this number. I quite liked it when it first came out, then haven't thought of it...

My songwriting contribution was "how to be a halfling", as covered by Jane Garthson and Phil Mills, and I myself covered Math Rocksby Cat Faber. The whole enterprise was organized by @metricula The album as a whole with be available from Bandcamp 9-Dec-2023 free to download, but...
Your Song

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #27 Your Song Elton John 1971 Turns out this was Elton's first international top 10 hit. Also turns out it was first recorded by Three Dog Night as an album track, but they didn't release it as a single since they wanted Elton to have his shot first. Look, it's melodic and the Bernie Taupin lyrics are, as usual, lovely. Enjoy!
Standing In The Way

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #26 Standing in the Way Joss Whedon from S06E07 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More With Feeling Look, that episode: aka, Buffy the Musical, blew me away, in part because I had no prior warning. It was definitely my favourite show of the era, with sharp writing and fine acting, and characters I really liked. The fact that all actors did their own singing (without au...

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #25 Friday On My Mind The Easybeats 1966 In the mid 60s, the Australian band "The Easybeats" were as popular locally as the Beatles were, and this song also represents the first international hit for any Australian rock act. And this is my version. Enjoy!
Lullaby - Shock Treatment

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #24 Lullaby from Shock Treatment Richard O'Brien 1981 Viewers may have noted that I am a bit of a fan of the oeuvre of Richard O'Brien, at least where it comes to movie musicals. This is from the kinda-sorta sequel to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which had a Brad and a Janet, and a Denton (hardcore Rocky Horror fans will realize that the town Brad and Janet come from...
First We Take Manhattan

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #23 First We Take Manhattan Leonard Cohen 1986 Don't ask me what the lyrics actually mean, like many Leonard Cohen songs they're wildly open to interpretation, but they also stick in your mind. I was introduced to this song by my friend Rob Cox, when we were putting together a band for a one-off performance. I think his daughter Anneke was the one that actually wanted ...
I'm Ready - Subspace Rhapsody

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #22 I'm Ready from Subspace Rhapsody, S2E09 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (aka, the Musical Episode) This is very much the companion song to ""I'm the X" .. in fact, it's almost the same tune, but whereas "I'm the X" is quite a sad song, this is actively triumphant.("I'm the X" was last week's MTaW) I have more facial hair and a deeper voice than Christine Chapel, b...

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #21 I'm the X - Subspace Rhapsody - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds I was waiting for the musical episode (S2E09) of Strange New Worlds with some anticipation. And while it may have a way to go before it matches Once More With Feeling (the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode) for my affections, it was a hoot, and the music was good too. To be honest, I still have to...
Slice Of Heaven

Music-Thing-a-Week Year 3 #20 Slice of Heaven Dave Dobbyn 1986 Written for the Footrot Flats movie, this is a catchy tune, reached number one in NZ and Australia, I heard it the other night, and it's a catchy number. I hope you enjoy the layered vocals, as I had to pretend to be an entire group... :D
Barre
Переглядів 45Рік тому
This is from a song-writing prompt from my friend Stu Barrow, who is struggling to master barre chords on guitar. (Mastering them quite quickly, TBH...) And in case you don't know, the barre chord is one where you use you forefinger to press down all the strings. Useful but tricky to manage at first. [Chorus] C I'm learning how to play the guitar G I know I'm going to be a big star Am But peopl...
Oh my God, I used to watch the old marvel superheroes cartoons on DVD when I was a little kid! This is so what I needed today! You very clearly did this song justice.

not bad man keep it up
It is lovely to hear this again. I have missed it. I first heard it on a cassette recording of Zanda performing it live and loved it at once. I had the pleasure of exchanging a few email with the artist back in the early 2000s. Do you know where I could find the chords, please?

@MarkALong64 I made contact with Zanda on FB not long before she passed away, through mutual friends. I also managed to make contact with Sam Armitage, the eponymous Sam, who co-wrote the song, and collected some notes here: robbiematthewsblog.blogspot.com/2021/03/this-here-since-ive-already-expended.html
Thank you very kindly!
On rare occasions, the internet does exactly what it’s supposed to. Thanks for posting!
Thank you!!!!!!
LOL My mom used to sing this to me and my brothers when we were little 😂😂😂 So random that this popped up. Gotta group text them
yeah it most likely disintegrated in the atmosphere
Haha I thought this was going to be spiderbaits run song, not the actual goodies
これなんだ。日本映画に欠けている部分は。
Classic
OMG!!! I didn't think anyone but me remembered Underdog!!
Love it!!! I was just singing this to myself the other day! Its's nice to meet another Super Chicken fan :)
I like this 😊 , very nice singing👌
Nice cover except for one thing. You got a wrong word in the lyrics. It does not say ain't no monster round. The lyrics say ain't no monster clown! I know this for a fact because in the PBS documentary superheroes never-ending battle, the composer himself plays on the piano and he says monster clown not monster round.
Seems likely. I was working off internet lyrics, I did what I could.
Thanks so much for all of these.
Love this song, Christopher Lee, what a voice
Thanks Robbie, haven't seen this film in years, love the soundtrack. Great to see the film finally getting a Blu-Ray release. There's 3 discs (Theatrical version, Director's cut & CD Soundtrack) FINALLY!!! Love the songs in this film.

Great cover!
This always gets eclipsed by the superb "Name Your Poison," but it's actually a pretty great song in its own right.

I had to go looking to see what this was about. Hah!
Great work promoting this Robbie, I didn’t realise the scale of the project until I saw the full track list.
It's HUGE!
Thank you.
I love this! Thank you for doing this!!
Yet another 'Fruit of the Internet' 😂
Fun fact, today, october 20th 2023 is the 60th anniversary of the original japanese gigantor cartoon (tetsujin 28)! 🤖
The more you know!
**I LOVE SHOCK TREATMENT!!!!!**
It's pretty cool, I agree... :D
I love when shows did musical episodes, especially Xena. Great cover Robbie!
Great one Robbie!
Why, thank you kind sir!
Hoopla!
Well bless your cotton socks. Great stuff.
Absolutely beautiful! I thought there had to be a wondrous cover of this song somewhere out there, and you didn't disappoint!
A glorious treat. Thanks 😎

If you see a live-action adaptation of this with my name attached... do not be surprised.
Sounds cool...
