Let me know in the comments who won in your opinion and leave a like ;)
Of course, this is not supposed to be a technical comparison!
Suggest me the next battle, you can choose between all the metal artists!

These two aren't even similar to compare. You ever hear of comparing apples to oranges? This is one of those times. Lombardo is a thrash metal and old school 80s metal type of drummer, while Portnoy is a progressive metal drummer. Lombardo plays with power, while Portnoy plays with finesse. So if you compare them by how well they fit into each other's genre of metal, it's impossible.
Nailed it man. Lombardo is speed and portney is finess. I take finess! But I do love speed. My censes is they both kick ass \m/
+Brandon MUT to me Lombardo plays with finesse, Portnoy is more like, machine, mathematics at school.
P indeed is a great player, but you can't listen to his drums 7 days a week, it is tiring.
+Brandon MUT
That's the very point. Lombardo created an own style, wich is rough, hard and powerful in it's own way.
Portnoy is a "to the click" accurate, energy saving player who is able to memorize difficult patterns and rythm changes to the max.
But fortunately there is no Lars Ulrich in the comparison.......he is also incomparable, because he might be the worst high profile player out there.
good comment...learned something too!
Kinda like comparing Elvis to Rob Halford.
All I can say is those of us who are drummers know that both of these guys are absolute beasts behind a set
Absolutely mate!
Set of titties
A) they're two different styles. B) the uploader picked some shite examples for Portnoy
Zane Hinshaw the examples for dave werent that good either. but i agree, theyre just different, each one is better than the other in some things
I totally agree with you. Dave had some incredible fill ins (and outs) and it almost seemed like Portnoy was playing something like country with the speed of contemporary Blues
I couldn't agree more!!
Thank You! Totally agree
This is just silly. There is no comparison. Portnoy is ridiculously technical and Dave is ridiculously fast. This is an apples vs. oranges comparison.
thank you
Guy Man well I guess the word versus means something different to you
They are both drummers, so you can compare then, doesn't matter if one is faster than another.
Sorry man, that might be the dumbest logic ever. As in, apples and oranges are both fruit, so they can be compared? So the old saying, "that's like comparing apples to oranges" just shouldn't exist in your world? smh
Mychemicalempire I'm done with everyone's brainless comments on here. You're all doomed.
Dave Lombardo hands down when it comes to thrash! 2 totally different styles...I'm a huge fan of SLAYER & Dave Lombardo!
Mike is the overall better player. And I love Dave, but I’m also a drummer and not just a listener. Mike is one of the only guys who can compete with the best of the great Neil Peart. Two very different styles between DT and Slayer, but if we are going off overall talent, Mike Portnoy blows his ass away and you know it too.
One drummer plays a lot of different beats to keyboards.
Lombardo- Pure agression and power
Portnoy- Technical genius
I prefer Lombardo.
even thought i prefer portnoy i like a good metal head not being a dick and saying anyone who prefers diffrent shit is shit so cheers man
+GhostOfWar wtf your comment, MIKE is the best, lombardo whosoever does what it does, i do what he does man, really! Mike play high level progressive metal and he can play anything
GhostOfWar Mike can only play 4.4???
go listen to fantomas and get back to me.
except that Portnoy plays Slayer pretty effortlessly. Lombardo is great because he complimented the Slayer's lean and fast guitar sound. Technical drumming would ruin the feel of the music. Don't forget that Slayer is heavily punk influenced. They even did a punk cover album.
The dichotomy that Portnoy plays with finesse is crap. He could play all the aggressive stuff pretty easy. Especially since Lombardo doesn't play blast beats often anyway.
Sometimes some people are just downright better. It's not always apples and oranges. Sean Reinert is just better than Lars
Portnoy is a technical genius? All he does is hertas and RLRLKK RLRLKK
Nobody is better than anybody.....It’s all about different styles and forms of musical expression. They are both incredible and amazing at what they do! 🤘🤘🤘
Agree
Have you ever heard of Thomas Lang???
One thing is for sure.. both these guys absolutely love being behind the drum set, and both guys belong there. They have fun👍👍🤘🤘☝☝💯💯
for me the both are very Great!!
@@fasciogabriel3396 that's basically what it comes down to 💯‼️🤟
I prefer Lombardo, but man we're lucky to have those two monsters still around. Awesome drummers!
Oddly enough, neither are with their original band.. :(
do you really think Portnoy is a MASTER?, no way dude.
@@cangu1975 he is really master at his class.. What do you do bastard?
can't even compare them.. They both are experts at a different state. Mike is more the progressive dude, and dave is more the real raw metal kinda guy. love em both
Dave will always be my favorite. He paved the way for 30 years but other guy was extremely polished
The other guy? Where were you living? Lol
There is no other guy. Dave and the others... Where do your ears living?
Other guy? Portnoy is just an "other guy" now? XD
@@fooook92 Yeah
Other guy. Lmao
Team Lombardo all the way🤘!!
Always
Not a bad video but you pulled some poor examples of Lombardo. Portnoy is a way better drummer technically (biassed since he lives nearby) but I rather listen to Lombardo any day. Portnoy gets destroyed by Dave's overall power.
My intention was mostly to show their style, anyway I prefer Lombardo too :)
Wow man!!! I think I kind of agree with ya. ......yea.
+standepain Are you out of your mind? Portnoy way better technically? No comment...
Portnoy is way better than Lombardo, I don't know why y'all think Lombardo is better?
+Brandon Rivera cause Slayer are better than Dream Theater lol
They are both some seriously badass drummers but if I had to go with one then it would be Portnoy all because he suits my style a little more
Hell yeah!
I am a Slayer fan but they are both very talented drummers with their own style with 2 different styles of music. Slayer is a very high tempo which requires speed on drums. Dream Theater is more technical. So in my eyes they are both winners. If you want to make it interesting put George Kollias against Dave Lombardo and put Mike Portnoy against Neil Peart. Then let's judge.
And moe over...some of these songs like panic attack are harder to play then what Lombardos playing!!
Neil is only best in playing solo.. But in songs portnoy is obviously best in the universe
@@imsomethingelse9329 The Professor Neil Peart was one of THE GREATEST DRUMMERS/PERCUSSIONISTS
PERIOD!
@@anthonysantos622 You just proved my point in the other comment. Famous with large following, Can play difficult parts!
Peart no doubt about it 👍🏼
estilos completamente diferentes Lombardo = Pegada , velocidad, precision, hombre record en doble bombo, Pornoy= Estilo, tecnica, complejidad, cerebro hombre capaz ade tocar compaces 17/32 con ilusion ritmica sin pelarse
Mike Portnoy. Is and always has been my favourite drummer. His versatile, intricate and technical style is unbelievable!🤟🏼
They are both the best in their own ways. 2 monster talents any band is lucky to have
Two different leagues. One is a band member and the other is a star.
Portnoy is a Star
Lombardo is a star
Portnoy! Portnoy can do things that Lombardo can’t even dream of doing on a kit, & Portnoy can do anything Lombardo can do & do it better.👍😎🔥
Hell yeah 🤘🍺😎
what is the second song, of lomabrdo?
One simple thing: when Lombardo was playing with the "unholy allegiance" or whatever was called that musical metal ensemble, Portnoy was on the back playing air-drums. Two great drummers, two great humans, who get along and will never collide. Two different worlds. Two drummers I always listen to carefully, because they're still reinventing their playing. Two Godfathers.
Metal Allegiance. Lombardo was playing Angel Of Death, Mandatory Suicide, Raining Blood, Postmortem and some others with Gary and a few others
@@fedora997 thank you! I was quite sure I was writing it wrong.
Both are phenomenal in their own way. Great clips of them.
We've all seen the drum "battle" with Dave and Charlie, which honestly I feel was the best!! But I would love to see one with Dave and Vinnie P!!!
There's no comparison. There's no competition.
Anyway, i prefer portnoy parts. Much more.
They're both great drummers.period
Lombardo... Totally won
I love the comparison of two totally different, and RAD, styles. \m/
Portnoy, which is great, studied (also on methods written after the advent of Dave Lombardo) and needs to show with videos, just in concert what he does, Dave Lombardo is an artist, said it all back in 86 with the album Reign Blood, it revolutionized Metal drum, affecting all Drummers post-Lombardo. A musician can not be compared to an artist, there is not comparison.
exactly. for his time, he was a trailblazer. Even though Gene Hoglan was around then, his material had pretty poor production, so the drums don't sound as good. Don't forget that RIB's success lay greatly in the clean and fast production. The sound is not boomy like most metal. It's very lean and precise.
Lombardo is an influence to almost every metal drummer. Including modern greats like Haake.
I’d take Dave anyday as my drummer
What is the second song by Dave?
They’re both phenomenal and the bests at what they do 2 of my 3 favorite living drummers are Lombardo and Portnoy
Lombardo👍
KKK are you crazy?
There should be clips of Lombardo playing with Fantomas, a lot of great drumming in there
Exactly!
At least someone knows about Dave's awesome work outside Slayer
It's not important who can play the drums well, but it's important that we can live in the same age and see them play!!
A diferença da qualidade sonora do Mike é esmagadora!!!
Dave Lombardo's style is so unique that nobody can compare to him.
He was the first drummer in my life, that I noticed how unbelievable his drumming raises the music which is playin.
I mean Slayer has a unique sound too. But without Dave Lombardo Slayer never could be so great how they are.
@Hudson Donald
I like Metallica. But Lars Ulrich isn't a hilarious drummer that somebody would make him to his idol.^^
And I see no even any tiny similarities between Lombardo and Ulrich's styles.
Ulrich is drumming especially to the guitars, Lombardo is drumming the song and makes the whole sound alive.
His drumming has like a reverb effect on the whole song. In his drumming I have noticed how important a drummer could be.
Slayer without Lombardo were definitely powerless.
But okay, between Lombardo and Benante there are some similarities, but only in the bass drum and snare style.
Lombardo's cymbals are magic. It is his main uniqueness I have never ever seen by any other drummer.
@Hudson Donald
I am a Turkish guy who lives in Germany.
Of course I am not an expert in English and definitely you will notice an accent.
But, can you speak German or Turkish to talk with me ?
I don't think so. But you could understand me, right ?^^
The question is what did let you suspect that I ain't understand anything of drumming?
I am not the only one who is saying Dave Lombardo is unique.
I have heard metal music for many years and still I am listening to less often. And no other drummer has ever take my attention any more than Lombardo.
Even Joey Jordison isn't rhythmical elegant as Lombardo. Speed doesn't interest me. I want to hear an elegant rhythm whats on point.
Okay only one guy is up there who is brilliant at drumming too, who has captured my attention of course too. Its Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett. He is even preciser than an atomic clock.^^
But in terms of the metal drummers there is no other as Dave Lombardo's and his "elegant" style. His usage of his cymbals are 100% unique.
@Hudson Donald
I have neither an excuse nor not a knowledge about drumming.
And who are you, the drummer pro ???
I am 41 years old an how I said it, nobody has made me focusing on his drumming except Lombardo and Moffett has did.
Isn't this enough for a musician like me, who explicitly pays attention to the style and ideas of other musicians?
And btw. Lars Ulrich were not be in Metallica for so long if he ain't one of the band founders.
Often I think he can't even drum. His snare hits are sometimes so pointless and NOT in accordance with the rest of the band.
In LIVE acts, he is like a drum computer who is NOT listening what the band is playing. He just want to drum like he has did in studio edition.
This isn't a flow a drummer definitely must bring into it. And you compare Dave's style with Ulrich's.
My god, maybe you have no idea what drumming is.
@Hudson Donald
What is your excuse to think you are the drumming master ?
@Hudson Donald
Have I said that I have no clue about drumming ?
You think I have not and also you ask me why I have not ? Don't you think that is a little bit stupid ?
So when tell me in German or in Turkish your sentence so I could understand what it means.^^
Who cares? they are both great! sorry i mean Awesome!
you right
I remember seeing a Metal Allegiance video with Dave Lombardo drumming to Slayer songs and Portnoy was all into watching Dave play. During Angel of Death, Portnoy was air drumming that whole song while watching Dave jam out. They both have mad respect for one another and they're both drumming God's.
what is title of the song that dave played on the first part?
Dean Velasco postmortem
Their both Gods in their genres. Dave for Thrash and Portnoy for Prog. We could compare them, but both of them are better than the other in particular areas.
gavin harrison... just go through his solos..
Would you agree if i say, Portnoy could play Lombardos stuff but Lombardo wouldnt be able to play Mikes stuff? I mean like exact covers not improv. Btw Lombardo is one of my fav, just an unbiast observation im trying to do.
Mike portnoy why the shitty examples? I personally expected Honor thy Father's intro or octavarium Or as I am...
+Edmond-mickel Rahmeh especially As I Am :)
Edmond-mickel Rahmeh dance of eternity?
Panic Attack is a Hell of a sound
Dos grandes, dos gigantes, dos maestros, no hay comparacion entre ellos. Ambos muy tecnicos y rapidos. Creativos y diciplinados.
How can you compare them?
Portnoy forever!!!!!!
Let's put it this way mike can play anything Dave can but Dave can't play everything mike can
Oh so now your gonna steal my comments too? lol Its literaly what i just replied on another comment
I think it's the reverse
Mike prob can play anything.but there are few drummers with the feel and swing of Lombardo. musical feel blows technique out of the water everytime
Mike prob can play anything.but there are few drummers with the feel and swing of Lombardo. musical feel blows technique out of the water everytime
Mychemicalempire wrong kit lol
They're both awesome. Better than I will ever be.
Panic attack verse groove,
one of my extremely all time favorite grooves ever. :D
We need Buddy Rich on the scene immediately.
Buddy Moon so sick of people saying buddy rich like he was some sort of god. He was fast with his hands.. big deal so are hs drumline members lol either of these two men could give it to buddy rich when they were 10 years old lmao
@@whiteobama1298 not a single drummer could give it to Rich! Anyone with any background in drumming will tell you that.
I don't know much about Lombardo (never found him interesting enough) but I know Portnoy. And these were terrible choices for showing off Portnoy. Panic Attack is a fun song but by no means his most challenging piece. Root of All Evil is just boring (albeit fun) compared to his other stuff. And that solo at the end was his solo for Latin Percussion (hence him focusing on the LP equipment). If you want to show off Portnoy throw in some Dance of Eternity, Paradigm Shift/Acid Rain, The Door, and his Solo or his jam with Rudess from Live at Budokan. And maybe find Lombardo doing something other than generic metal to make him look more interesting ;)
TBH, there are better choices foir Lombardo too, than what was shown.
Humilde opinión, considero que ambos son de lo mejor, y en su género respectivo. Su gran don, talento y virtuosidad en la percusión, son inigualables les doy un número 1 a ambos. Saludos cordiales desde Costa Rica 🇨🇷👍🤘
Love them both, especially Dave Lombardo coz I've grown up with those slayer Album Like Season in the Abys & South of heaven..
Two winners!! Lombardo!!!!
Lombardo
@0:53
Finally I can watch a UA-cam video of a drummer and hear the hi-hat distinctly.
What amazes me about Dave is the raw energy he uses. You can see the entire drumset shaking due to the hits. Also he has a great groove, even the simplest pattern sounds great. I don't know how he does It.
And portnoy million times better
Some of his best work was in Grip Inc ,those who haven't heard them ,need to Rip Gus
Portnoy is a god, but Lombardo is god of gods
very hard...to would have to choose Lombardo for the passion..
And Master Mangini is the father of " god of gods"
Realy
No point to compare 2 awesome drummers both technically perfect but playing different styles. It's like comparing Megadeth to Pantera. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. 😉
both are a awesome drumers in their own genre's
Whats that song Dave is playing at 2.40? Btw..rare to see him in a 3 piece ludwig. Saludos desde Chile
Technically Mike is better but, I'd rather listen to Dave.
*+1 if you vote Lombardo wins*
On the technique part I wonder are they making it the drums as they go along on the drumming
3rd song?
Lombardo!
Seen both dudes. When I saw Portnoy play live I didn't understand the hype nor why his music sounded nothing like his stuff on the Cds, and sadly Dream Theater lost A LOT of brownie points with me that day (the lead singer was kind of 'screamy' too)...Lombardo on the other hand was masterful, especially live--just my opinion according to what I saw.
That's very odd. I've never heard someone say that before. I've seen Portnoy play twice and he played amazing. He had great chemistry with the audience and even came out to talk both times!
Both are awesome
Anyone know what that awesome shit starting at 2:30 is? I wonder who Dave's playing with there....
Dave Lombardo all the way
Portnoy ganha de longe
They're both great
Sometimes you want mathematical precision, sometimes you want enthusiastic raw power. For the first you need Portnoy, for the latter Lombardo. Both are awesome.
Apples and tomatoes. Mr. Portnoy fits MY style best. Portnoy has more feeling in his playing.
What is More Feeling to you? Passion? Energy? Whatever it is I will probably disagree. Apples to Tomatoes sounds a little insulting, hopefully you didn't mean it that way
s Humphrey Yeah, Didn't mean it as an insult. I think Mike's ability is a lot higher than Dave's so Mike has more tools in his tool box.
mike Koz again 'a lot higher'??? He has more tools? He isn't a pilot or carpenter. More feeling? What the hell does that have to drumming? You still sound insulting or dumb. Just say you like Portnoy over Lombardo, and leave it at that
Jesus fuck man let it go.
steve Humphrey dude you sound fucking dumb
Portnoy❤️
Hey thanks for the videos. Where did you get the footage? Did you just take some existing stuff and edit it together?
What’s the first song that Lombardo’s playing to?
Lombardo is insane..He aced it.
Apples & Oranges...makes no sense to even have such a video. Portnoy is a technical drumming machine, his fundamentals are about as tight as can be, no wasted movement of the arms etc. Metal drummers usually don't have that level of polish..again apples and oranges. Both do what they and do it well
murilo ninj More like Apples and Birds. Nothing alike. Dave is a god.
Son muy diferentes... no hay punto de comparación..
I guess it comes down to what style you feel more in tune with, for me,I'm a slayer fan,so it's Lombardo all the way.
Lombardo has his well earned fans because his style along with the rest of his former band mates fitted... But come on man... One simple thing... tell me a song from Lombardo that Portnoy cannot play, And I'll tell you 50 songs from MP which Lombardo will never be able to play..lombardo's .power and speed you can achieve with practice, MP's talent and musical sense along with skills you ether have it or not... There's only one drummer out there to compare MP with and that's Mike Mangini... Other than that it's just nonsense.
nope... he's good, surely better than Lombardo... but certainly not better than Portnoy... that's my opinion....
Lombardo destroys portnoy. Portnoys rhythm sucks. Sounds like a drum machine no feeling at all. Talented but he's got no soul. It's like a kid on guitar that can shred but none of it sounds good because there's no feeling. Same idea as Portnoy on drums.
do you even know Portnoy dude?...
+Irving Adrian Portnoys got no soul? yeaaah, right!
+Enzo Piatti LOL!! That's exactly the opposite of what I'm saying, or was it meant to sound sarcastic?
Technically: Mangini (*peace*)>Portnoy>Lombardo
Musically: Portnoy>Lombardo>Mangini
Passion: Lombardo>Portnoy>Mangini
Totally agree!
So why do you bring Mangini to this contest?
To prove a point
There was no need
What do you mean by "Musically"?
Studio comparison?
I think people should start comparing as a study in different styles. It is completely justified finding them better and worse on different things.
Portnoy is the be(a)st !!!!
Lombardo: a Metal god. A giant.
And infant to MP
2:29 what song?
Speed and power- Dave
Technicality - Mike
For me (repeat, for me) Mike Portnoy.
Mike all the way.
Dave's an amazing drummer don't get me wrong but technicality triumphs over speed any day
Or else Aaron Kitcher wins.
Mind of a Killer One handed one Hello kitty set...
En humilde opinión creo que no son comparables, ambos muy buenos en sus estilos
Name of the song in 2:50 please
dave lombardo
Portnoy has hi-hat control like no one else. To me, he's also one of the most expressive and energetic drummer in the industry. Not to belittle Lombardo, he's one hell of a drummer. At least, they both have feel and emotion, unlike a guy that goes by the name of Mangini.
If you watch Dave Lombardo live, you can see that Dave blows Portnoy away in terms of energy.
Dave. Awesome feel.
They BOTH won!! Total Badass!!!! NICE!!!!!
Lombardo: pure expresso vs Portnoy: caramel machiato with extra whip cream
Definitly Dave Lombardo. Mike Portnoy may be overall more techniqual, but I prefer Dave’s style of playing.
Interesting!!
They're both great and represent totally different styles of playing. I prefer Dave he's played in some of my all time favorite bands maybe his playing had something to do with that..hmm. I saw Dave when he was in Fantomas in a little club around 2004. I was standing like 10-20 feet away as he was setup on the side of the stage facing Mike Patton so I got a sideview of him and his set. One of the best shows ever and to witness this master play was amazing so much power when the music called for it or with a lot of groove and light the man can play anything.
