    I could have save myself so much money if I had just purchased the ZP6 Special just starting out. After multiple hand grinders, I've finally found one that delivers sweet clear flavors that linger on the tongue long after I'm done with my cup. Can't recommend this grinder enough (for pour-over). Thank you Lance for putting my pour-over game on a whole new level.

    i got this a few years ago when I was at the Taiwan coffee show. I asked the 1zpresso rep, whats the best grinder ONLY for filter, he said ZP6. Went last year, I asked about what is still the best one for filter, he just said now that the ZP6 is gone, try the other ones haha.

  • @Boyetto-san
    @Boyetto-san 2 роки тому +11

    You make a really compelling case for why this grinder should be something 1Zpresso should get behind more, and I'd definitely be interested if they did. It sounds counterintuitive that they won't distribute the ZP6 because it's essentially too good at what it does, as a filter coffee specialist. But I do get that a lot of people who buy hand grinders are also ones looking to get maximum versatility, for maximum value in the price of 1 grinder. It's why the first grinder I bought was the JX Pro because it was marketed as capable of both filter and espresso, with an adjustment mechanism that's more than capable of doing that (even though I still don't actually have an espresso machine yet lol).
    At the same time, it goes back to that principle you brought up with the Niche: a wider particle distribution (even if not as wide as the Niche's) means a wider margin of error, even if it means you won't be able to push extraction as much without the fines starting to degrade the flavor. The ZP6 probably came off to 1Zpresso as being too difficult for most users to get the right cup out of with most coffees. If we're gonna do an email campaign for this, it should probably be in terms of showing willingness to fiddle around with a narrow margin of error in order to get a higher reward ceiling, so that 1Zpresso feels confident enough that there's a market of people who clearly know what they want out of the ZP6.

    If I’m correct 1Zpresso also has another one with this burr call the Ks as well. Being here in Asia, they’re common to find in the second-hand stores. I just got a used ZP6 and comparing it w/ my Kplus, the clarity is much more elevated though you lose some body and the grinding speed from a Kplus.

    So I bit the bullet and bought the new version of the ZP6. I expected at least a somewhat different experience as compared to my other 1ZPresso hand grinders, but not this different. For example, I usually run my K-Max at about the 6.5 mark, but am running the ZP6 at about the 4.5 to 5 mark. I know this doesn't say a whole lot, I don't have specific micron measurements for the burrs or a PSD of the grind output, but it's just so weird to me how much finer I can push while getting exceptional flavor. It's bringing out a ton of sweetness in my Ethiopian beans as compared to using the identical brew method with my K-Max. And sure, there is less body to the cup it seems, but I'm finding I'm okay with that given the boost in "clarity" (able to pick out more flavor notes). Also the grinding experience itself feels wildly different. The pre-breaker section on the burr set seems to make grinding... easier? Requires less force? I don't know what it is but there's a more "hollow" feeling as I grind with it by comparison to the K-Max, with less "stalling" (moments where you have to "push through" a harder light roast bean). I'm still sad it doesn't have a magnetic catch cup and was being petty about pulling the trigger solely based on that (🤣) but am absolutely happy with this purchase. Thanks for encouraging experimentation on this coffee journey.

    From just keeping tabs for the past few days on the grinder stocks on the 1zpresso website, the ZP6 looks to be their best selling grinder, with their J-max S in second place. The K-max looks to be in third, with them interestingly receiving a restock of the silver. So I guess the whole litigation issues aren't getting too much in the way. The K-ultra, Xpro S, and Q2 S look to be just sitting on the shelves. People seem to really prefer iron gray over silver, despite it looking all dirty from scratches and wear in the long term.
    I did message them to see if they have a ZP6 with a magnetic catch cup, and they said no "but that's a great idea". So fingers crossed we eventually get that sweet JS burr in a J-Max body or something.

  • @polbeanz899

    The K series seems like a great platform for modularity. Swap out the top adjustment ring module for varying leaps in adjustment (8 to 22 microns). Swap out the inner burr and the outer burr carrier from the typical K Series, J Max burr set, or even the JS/KS/ZP6 burr set. The level of potential innovation is quite exciting to think about.
    Or maybe it’s just me wanting to convert my new K-Max to the ZP6 HAHAHA

    I enjoy both the content and the delivery of what you produce very much! Maybe you could indulge me by trying to answer this question: Since (if I am not mistaken) the burr seems to be the same in ZP6 and the K-series grinders, is it possible that the difference in clarity between ZP6 and K-* grinders is only due to feed speed, i.e., the average number of coffee beans entering the grinding stage at the same time, maybe because there is less space between the shaft and the walls in ZP6?

    Fantastic review as always.
    Interestingly, I have an older discontinued "E-Pro" model by 1Zpresso which I bought in Japan back in 2020. Not sure if that was sold in other parts of the world
    It has exactly the same body as the ZP6 with the same 60 click range (0-5) but it has a 38mm heptagonal burr. This model does expresso well at 13-18 clicks and it also does a good job of anything up to V60 with very clear results. I like the 38mm burrs more than the 48mm because they make grinding easier at the finer ranges. Quick tip re: gripping the smooth metal body - I stick a strip of 80grit sandpaper around the cylinder (using double sided tape) as an alternative to a silicone grip sleeve. It is hands down the best thing you can do to a handgrinder. You will have super grip strength and as a result you will chew through the hardest beans with ease.

      Those two are very comparable in price. My question would be is this for espresso or for filter or both with heavy espresso or both with heavy filter? It's difficult. Kinu is stepless and favors espresso heavily. K Plus favors filter, but can do espresso quite well.

    Very informative video. I mostly brew pour over filter cups, I find I prefer my Comandante to my Lagom Mini or Niche (my son pulls espresso shots),. and I like my C40 a lot, but open to the idea that ZP6 could be better for filter brews. Not entirely clear why it is not being sold, and I agree, they should make it available. You assert ZP6 has less fines that C40. Perhaps? Obviously the burr designs are different between the two. Even if you think a sort by eg Kruve sifter would not tell the whole story, it still would have been interesting to see how that turned out, and perhaps grind 10g in both and spread out the grinds on paper to see if there was any visual difference. That would have been interesting and enhanced this video. The engineering of ZP6 sounds great, 3 bearings and double springs. I just had a similar thought the other day as I was cleaning my C40, does its one spring lose tension, and if so...

    • @LanceHedrick
      @LanceHedrick  2 роки тому +11

      I have a c40 and recently owned about 20 hand grinders (see my other hand grinder videos). Without a doubt this is better for filter. I blind cupped it alongside the K Plus (I prefer this, as do many others, to the C40) and the C40. Consistently preferred this. Also, there is a big visual difference as well as a big sifting difference. optically there is a big difference. I don't have nice enough camera equipment to really be able to showcase this (well, i didnt when this was filmed, but now have a nice macro lens). But, I can say confidently this produces far less fines than the C40. As do other grinders i've used.

  • @MartiusGao
    @MartiusGao 2 роки тому

    @Lance Hedrick 5:50 I think ZP6 has the same 2mm thread pitch as other 1Zpresso grinders with similar adjustment ring design such as K-Plus. K-Plus has 90 clicks pre rotation and 0.022mm/22microns per click. ZP6 has 60 clicks so one click is 0.033mm/33microns.

    • @m.andre824

      The Zp6 actually maxes out to 70 available clicks but how you adjust the top collar can give you a wider range on the coarser side, say move your 0 to -10" so click 70 will now give you a coarse grind of what previously was an impossible "click 80"

      I am very impressed with the first cup. I used 3.2 as you did in the video since i have literally no baseline yet and I brewed a 1:16 kalita 185 with 25gram dose of la papaya typica (vac sealed in a deep freezer) which is a coffee I'm very familiar with. I think that grind is finer than I'd like here but what really impressed me is that the cup was still good. Was more similar to a good brew from my tricolate (something i generally have a lot of inconsistency with on c40) but on a kalita. It will be interesting to see how the tricolate behaves with this grinder. So seems it meets this claim of being able to push an extraction as far as you want as i pushed it honestly further than i want on my first cup with no astringency or drying sensation very low bitterness. It was also just a pleasure to use. Only minor gripe is that i would like the grinds catch cup to have some sort of detent when screwed in.
