This is my favorite time travel book of all time. I've read read it over and over again. To me, it's the kind of book that you read and then it sticks with you for weeks. I love the fact that it is based on actual historical events. I can't see a picture of the Statue of Liberty without thinking of this book. So vivid. Thank you for your review. Now I am going to have to read it again.

The best time travel novel I’ve read and I’ve read a few. His collection of 12 time travel short stories is also a gem: “About Time”. Currently reading Finney’s “5 Against the House”, which has basically a pre “Ocean’s 11” storyline. Finney was a very special author IMO.

I read this book in the early 80's, LOVED it, somehow forgot about it until like you, read the recommendation by King and bought it from Amazon. Rereading it now. it's like traveling back in time reading it, How could I have forgotten about it for all of these years. Wish Id remembered it when I visited NY and was in front of the Dakota and central park

If that immersion technique worked then the Renaissance fair would be a lot more interesting

Thank you so much for explaining how they traveled back in time. I was so confused and that is why I logged on to your review. Seems like they immersed themselves in the sets on the big floor and then did self-hypnosis and I guess magically faded back into the real time. I was very confused though that Katie went with him when they had to be so careful to choose people and she just tagged along. Thank you so much.

I’m reading this book now and I got really confused about how the time travel happens. I’m glad I watched your video because your interpretation of how they travel in time is the same way I do, so I’m glad I’m not missing anything. I’m excited to continue because I feel like the author is holding a lot back and I want to know more!

I have to agree with you. This is my favorite book only because I listen to it on audio read by Paul Hecht. He makes it a delight! Is this the first time travel book since the time machine? Everyone copies this book like in Kate & Leopold, Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeves , Etc. The second book is also on audio read by Paul Hecht, it's pretty good also but not so wound up in historical descriptions.

Richard Matheson wrote Somewhere in Time...not sure if it was before this one or not.

I remember reading this book in 8th grade. I don't remember why I chose this book, but I'm glad I did
Similar to you, I was hesitant on whether or not I was going to like this book. When it got to how the protagonist was going to time travel and the facility he was in, I got confused and had to reread some pages just to make sure I'm reading it correctly.
Luckily, the story, the plot, and the twist all made it worthwhile!

If you want another romance /time travel check out Somewhere in Time by Richard Matheson, and The Time Travelers Wife.

Although "Time and Again" is my favorite novel, it is far from being the best written material I have ever read. The novel has quite a few faults and shortcomings. I will name three: (*SPOILERS*) First, apparently author Finney wrote the book with the anticipation that an overwhelming majority of readers are either from Manhattan or know Manhattan intimately (at least the street layout) or he expected the reader to have a companion map of Manhattan next to the book while they are reading it. Second, the disturbing use of "Negro" to describe black people and the insinuation or implication that they are the harbinger of street crime in NYC. Yes, I know that it was a different era of mentality in 1970 and eve most black persons called themselves "Negro" then and also that Mr. Finney put that bias in there as a mindset of his main character (perhaps transferred from his own bias?), but it's ironic that while writing a time travel piece he couldn't have had the foresight and intuition to realize that the novel would be read by an audience fifty years later. Third, the way that time travel becomes easier for the person (even the uninitiated person) as the novel progresses. Si at first has to be trained how to do it and fails several times before succeeding, then he's able to do it easier. I get that. But Si going back and forth like the blinking of the eye...kind of a stretch. Julia is transported from 1882 to 1970 because she is physically attached to Si, I get that, too. But Julia being able to go back to 1882 by merely wearing her 1882 outfit and putting the Brooklyn Bridge tower between her and the modern skyscrapers without first having any hypnosis or immersion exercises? C'mon, man, umm...no. Now some will state that she was able to do it without hypnosis or immersion because she's trying to get back to her own time and a living being wants to and is "naturally" inclined to go back to its own time period. Whatever. Again, IMO, nope.
So, just about like BNN, I give "Time and Again" roughly 4 out of 5. Even with its negatives, it has remained my favorite novel since I first read it in the Fall of 1994. It's not a shocker for me that it has not been made into a movie. The material is quite too much and too long to make a two-hour movie, Richard Matheson already stole that thunder with "Somewhere in Time", and audiences could not handle it and would not have patience with the way they are accustomed to seeing movies with the short split second scenes. Besides, I am glad it hasn't made movie status as I am somewhat against novels/novellas being made into movies or series.

Time and Again put me off time travel books for a long time, until I read Rant by Chuck Palahniuk. That was an unexpected masterpiece.
