This was so helpful! I just watched a Eurovision clip (like everyone, I’m sure) and had to see how this instrument worked. It’s so cool! I want to learn to play it now.
I've worked out a way of using thin wall PVC and making the windway like a metal organ pipe. Also scaling up to 1-1/4 inch starting at 3/4 inch. The bass version has a very rich sound not piercing. The length is such that a heated "U" bend puts the other end up from the floor not just to close by palm but to thump like a Blue Man Group type percussion. Lots of fun when close miked and processed.
I was curious about the instrument after seeing the Ukrainian Eurovision performance, and being a flute player who is familiar with whistles (thanks, Irish folk music), I grabbed my biggest whistle (middle D), taped up the holes and saw what I could get when I covered the bottom with my hand. I confirmed what I suspected- covering the bottom led to a higher note if I maintained the same breath control, but when I adjusted my embrechure dropped the tone down by a semitone- it seemed like your 'covered' notes were overly distorted and that makes sense, it was tough to switch to the 'true' note when you're doubling the length of the instrument. Thanks for giving me more insight into how this pretty unusual woodwind works- I thought 'it's a woodwind bugle, but you have one key to mess with' and that seems pretty much correct.
I know this is an old video, but I am really impressed with this video. I was wondering what the instrument that Kalush Orchestra used on Eurovision the other night. We don't have anything like this in the UK. The closest thing I can think of is the Post Horn. But that is a brass instrument.
Trying to search around a bit to learn how to play the "seljefløyte" (Norwegian) or in English, willow flute. Practically almost the same instrument, except that on the williow flute one blow on the side of the flute.
this is wonderful. when wanting to accompany other musicians, how would you determine which overtone flute is best? if the song is in C would you just need a C overtone flute or would it be like other instruments such as harmonica where you have to have a different key harmonica for a song in C?
That depends a lot on the progression of chords in song and general scale of a song. Overtones go well with some scales and dont match others, but the starting point would be to try lets say C flute for C rooted song and see if it works with other sounds of the overtone flute scale :)
You'd want to use a C overtone flute for a song in C. An overtone flute in C will give you the major chord tones of C (C, E, and G) as well as D and several other notes, not all of which perfectly align with the 12 notes of the chromatic scale used in modern music but all of which will fit the key of C. An overtone flute in F would also give you a C and a G, but its other notes might sound out of place if your song is in C.
@@harevis yes they call it tilinka maybe Ukranian. I am from Turkey so I really dont know what does it mean. I will search about it. what is your favourite flute? I love bansuri flute from India.
Nice vid, i got one and it's really lovely to play. As im a didgeridoo player i tried to circular breath while playing flute, but seems that isn't working right, so i understand i need to switch another breathing as you mentioned deep inhale and exhale till the end, right?
Circular breath on flute is something pretty challenging. Myself after having some years of experience with various type of flutes and blowing techniques I have to say that I was not able to get the circular breath on flute yet. Teacher Tito La Rosa is able to do it amazingly on many flutes and I tried to learn it from him. When I observe him doing it I can see that the technique is actually same as with didgeridoo, but with lot more sensitivity there to keep the right air pressure, very steady and gentle. Good luck for your practices!
Eduardo, it depends on avaibility and standards of PVC pipes in your country. Best I can advice is to go for electric wires pvc pipes, not the hydraulic ones. The ones for cables have thinner and better IMO thickness. Good Luck!
Heja ^^ This vid make me think about my Flute. Its a standard C Flude kids use in school. If i cover every hole did i have then techmically an Overtone Flute in C pattern and can use it like in the vid?
Heyho, yes it can bring the C note into overtones, but not many, as the difference is in the length of the flute. Your C school-recorder-flute would probably produce some 3, max 4 overtones, while the long one has wider range and option to cover the end to play around with the sounds in between :) Greetings!

Telenka is one of many, many names for that flute. The cathegory would be "overtone flute" in English. In Poland we call those with names such as Końcówka, Fujara Wielkopostna, Flet Alikwotowy etc. Greetings to Turkey :)
This is such a simple instrument it has been invented in many places around the world independently. It is literally just a tube, an emptied willow stick.

Beautiful. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thank you! :)
Extra ornament: rrrolling/flattering with your tongue.
Yes! :)
I just mounted a pvc tube to my alto recorder mouthpiece.
That can also work! :) Though the amount of overtones will be limited due to the tube diameter.
Thank you for this 💜🌼
You are so welcome :)
