A Life Lesson that I learned the hard way... I spent my 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s saving, scrounging, and purchasing STUFF. Then in my 50’s reality kicked in... I looked around at all my STUFF... it cluttered my mind, my house, my life! My partner’s parents passed away and we got all their STUFF... it was suffocating (STUFFOCATING?). I still have a long way to go, but decluttering and consuming less is very liberating!!!! There is also so much to be said (written??) for the feeling one gets when we see the true value in what we have. Truth be spoken... “It’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you’ve got.” (Sheryl Crow). Thanks for this awesome video Immy... I am sooo looking forward to more videos on this topic... cuz I still need to de-STUFF my life. xXx

Oh thankgoodness you didn't just list things like "clothes I don't fit, clothes that don't bring me joy, multiple backups of products, etc" which almost all other videos with this title have been. It's like a "in case you forgot what minimalism/decluttering is supposed to be like" video more than a personal one like yours that gives more unique examples that prompt self reflection. Thank you, thank you! And it was indeed very interesting to hear.
I have so many nail polishes for a person who no longer wears them but it seems too wasteful to just throw them away. So I've been painting my sister's and mum's nails for them when I see them! They enjoy it too. Win-win!

We are all going through a learning curve and questioning why we need to buy or own certain things, or look a certain way, because it’s either traditional or because others do. I think these are exciting times where we are questioning and opening our eyes to things like consumerism and other ‘isms’. So agree with you on the choices you’ve made. Totally agree with you on cardigans, high heels, hand bags and fashion in general. I think trousers or ‘pants’ have been the most liberating piece of clothing for women this century- I find I rarely wear anything else these days so I guess dresses are the things which I’ve mostly dispensed with.

I love that you take the time to explain why you personally don’t enjoy and therefore have these things anymore, because it really prompts self-reflection. Personally, I never feel more confident than when I’m wearing stompy black high-heeled boots, and I love black nailpolish, but I’ve never owned a handbag or a makeup pallet of any kind. I really love how you stress that we should reflect over what we each individually need or value in our lives, instead of just saying “no one ever needs *this one thing*”, which can of course be true for some things, but definitely isnt always the case.

I Love that you have given up things because you genuinely feel that you don't use it or that it isn't for you. Instead of beeing driven of guilt or striving to become someone else (that just have X -amount of things). It is such a difference why you do stuff and it is so empowering to hear that you do things because it really alignes with who you are. Keep doing you!

I love makeup so much (it has to be green and cruelty free, tho) but i cannot wear any for many months straight because i suffer from an autoimmune disease, and when it strikes all of a sudden i become allergic to everything. Among the dozens of severe struggles this disease has caused me along the years, this is the most heartbreaking. I know i sound stupid, but makeup was my "safety corner" whenever i felt very bad and uncapable of anything, and now it's gone. My house is pretty much cutter-free, but still i cannot get rid of my beloved makeup! I really like your look, and your words are empowering for many people! Thanks for sharing!

I used to be OBSESSED with makeup, did reviews on ig, constantly tried everything new out ect.. and while I do still have a good amount of makeup, I’ve stopped buying new makeup unless I’m replacing something I’ve run out of that’s a basic (foundation, eyebrow pencil, mascara ect.) and I’ve given Away probably 80% of my palettes and lip products. It feels so nice to be able to fit all of my makeup in on drawer instead having an entire dresser dedicated to it all 😅

Nappy sacks! While we use a mix of cloth and disposable nappies, I always thought you needed nappy sacks (the little plastic bags to dispose of disposable nappies in). By my middle child I wondered why I needed a plastic bag to put a single use item into the bin!
Continuing the baby theme, I don’t own any wet wipes or baby wipes. Again something I just assumed you needed that I learnt you absolutely don’t. Cloth face washers for wiping little hands and faces on the go, and I cut up an old towel and use the pieces as reusable bottom wipes for nappy changes.
For me, minimalism has been partly around questioning why do I think I need something, which immi conveyed really well with her reason for not owning handbags!
Long time watcher first time commenter! Thanks for the videos Immi! X

Also, I appreciate the language you use in this video. You are not bashing or judging others for having the items you listed, instead keeping it personal to your experience. Love it!!

Great video. I can really relate to the no lipstick, eyeshadow and nail polish thing. I found that the older I got the less make up I wore and now I'm bare faced 99% of the time. I actually prefer it.
Talking about age, I'm 38 years old and small chested as well but let me tell you - things are starting to sag and I find I do need a bra otherwise my boobs are level with my elbows 😂 especially since I've gained weight.
And I do love my cardigans, those big granny ones with big pockets. I wear them instead of a jacket when it's not too cold outside.

I donated a heap, am about to sell a heap of Mac (and various other expensive brands) of lipsticks that I've brought and literally never worn. Not even once. I've stopped coloring my hair and allowed my natural gray to come in (I look like a skunk atm but oh..the freedom!!!!!!!) I've sold off masses of things - clothes, shoes, accessories....my bench is clear for the first time in over 10 years. Going low waste and simple has literally CHANGED MY LIFE. Oh and I wanted to add my opinion on something lol. I really think that society plays a HUGE role in what people wear, buy, eat, drink, etc. For example, the bra... ah yes the dreaded boob bag. I think that lots of teenagers (me being one), young girls, and possibly even grown women may feel pressured into wearing bras. Yeah! Well that's all lol. I loved your video!! :)

  • @jessspagett8488
    @jessspagett8488 5 років тому +1

Sorry for writing so much, but I wrote this as I was thinking of it.
I have found that I have stopped buying a lot of these items is well, either because I can't find them in my shape or because I'm not in that phase anymore. I let go of my hair straightener a few months back because it was cheap and I wanted to let my hair repair itself (from the heat and using cheap hair products). I do want to get my hair straightened again in the future, but I would most likely borrow a straightener than buy one. I still have a hairdryer, but only use it for some of my craft projects than actually drying hair.
I haven't used nail polish in a long time either. I do want to get my favourite cherry red colour nail polish again, but since I'm not in a phase where I want to wear it, I'm not going to buy it. Over the years I was someone who barely wore makeup but did go through phases where I would buy some to try them out. I threw out a whole bunch of makeup last year because I wasn't wearing it as much as I would have liked.
I've got a couple of handbags and totes that I like. I do want to get a backpack but not sure how often I would use it. For me, bags and clothing have been items that I have become very intentional with. I usually ask myself how often would I use it, what would I use it for, do I need it right away and what kind of bag would I see myself using.
I'm finding that it's the same with clothing in general. I have always enjoyed op shopping, but over the last few months I've become a lot more intentional with what clothes I want to buy and where I buy them from. How long the clothing items are going to last me have been something I consider a lot more recently as well. I go to op shops as much as I can to buy clothes and only go fast-fashion type places if I'm not able to find the size or style I'm looking for at op shops, or I need a certain clothing item asap, which isn't very often. When buying clothing I do plan to go to the op shops firsts before going to any other clothing store to see what's available. The next step I want to take is buying more ethical items of clothing.
Bras are an interesting topic. I haven't brought a traditional bra for a long time because I've used sports bras so often. I would love to get a new bra, something like an underwire or something. But I have a hard time finding one for my chest shape because my body has grown accustom of sports bras.
The only time I tend to watch tv nowadays is when I am at a friends place and we are watching something or I am playing a video game. Otherwise, it's all on my laptop. I do want to do some sort of no-screen challenge of some sort. But I want to figure out what would be my guidelines for it.
I have recently got rid of a pair of high heeled booties because I was hardly wearing them. They needed replacing anyway since the soles were starting to wear out. I do want to get another pair, but until I need them, I'm not going to buy another pair.

Thanx so much for this video, it´s such a huge inspiration for me and the current phase of my life. You inspired me to think "why do I even own a few lipsticks when I actually hate to wear them, just apply them when I´m leaving the house and then never ever re-applying when being outside" or "why do I own that curling iron if my hair is also kind of naturally curly and I´m too lazy to use it anyway"..... I still have some bras but going through the "no bra challenge" since the the beginning of 2020 and probably won´t come back to wear bra again. I don't own any nail polish either! I live with my family so there is a curling iron and straightening iron here, but I don't use either, does that count? I don't own a single makeup pallet, single eyeshadow, blush, and only one mascara and lipstick for special occasions. But there are other things that I own way too many of that I need to cut down on.

I don't buy make up pallets because of the same reason. Most of the colours don't suit me so I either buy single colours or the smaller ones with only 2 or 4 colours and all the colours suit me and I'll use.

Great video! I'm not sure I'm at that place yet in my minimalist journey. Working on it, though. Wish I could go without a bra. With an E cup, it's not a possibility - lol! I'm trying to reduce the amount of days that I use a hair dryer. Having trouble with the hair I have (wish I had yours!) - it's straight on top and wavy at the bottom (and shoulder length), so it's just not attractive if I don't blow dry the bottom. If there was a way to go completely without a hair dryer, I would love to do it. I'm going to use up the rest of my nail polish and then not repurchase. It's so much easier without it. I also love lipstick, but never wear it and wish I did like to wear it. I have one beautiful mauve shade from Red Apple lipstick and will try to use it up before I say goodbye forever. Thank you for posting videos that really inspire me to rethink my purchases and help me to buy less and feel like I just *need* less. You're awesome! :D

My hair is the same, shoulder length, straight on top and wavy in the ends! I use heat on my hair less then one time a month and my hair is getting more wavy in the back so I think not adding the heat to my hair is helping the waves, like Immys hair and her curls, giving the hair a break from heat so it can "bounce back" 😊

I dont paint my nails either my hands are too busy the color would peel in a day and organic ones are pricey...bags sadly I have a few from my trip to Europe....so I have a bag from Madrid Paris and Italy but I use them as storage or keep them tucked away they dont bother me...I dont wear heels anymore...I only have 3 pairs of shoes including my work shoes 😂 and I have 1 simple sports jacket that 11 yrs old and 1 warm hoodie and my work jacket I have to use...2 hats 1 scarf 1 pair of gloves

Hi Immy, thank you for the video! I listened to the video and it struck me that a lot of things you don't own anymore have to do with beauty and femininity. Does your outlook in general on those concepts has changed as well over the years I wonder? Also: I myself like to be minimal and low waste as well but I must admit that I also like to feel and look like a women. I enjoy wearing feminine clothes for example and nail polish once in a while. I am not saying you are not feminine but I notice that several female UA-camrs seem to go a bit extreme and refuse what they call "beauty duty" and let their leg hair grow etc. I am curious what your view is on this and tend to think myself that youth, health and femininity are also in this world to be celebrated and enjoyed by women.

Melanie Godwin I am not saying that a woman should wear make up (don't wear any myself), i was just asking Immy's view on feminity and beauty because I know she is interested in feminism and related issues. I also noticed that compared to some years ago she tends to wear less make up, doesn't straighten her hair anymore (i applaud the curls!!) so I was wondering if this is a concsious choice and thought process on her side
