@@barbarahallowell2613 Presently after their recent refurbishment the Amfleet I coaches of the northeast regional trains are very nice considering most were built FORTY years ago, late 1970s to. early 1980s. However Amtrak has ordered new Siemens Venture coaches to replace them, but Amtrak California and Amtrak Midwest trains will get theirs before the Amtrak east coast. I don't think there are more comfortable coach seats that are better than Amfleet anywhere in the world...

As a frequent viewer of this channel, and fellow aviation enthusiast, I’m so glad you guys enjoyed Amtrak. I have been a train enthusiast even before I was a plane nerd, mainly because of my travels with them. As a Connecticut resident, I often take Amtrak to travel up and down the northeast. The prices are pretty reasonable, and it’s a super comfortable ride. I do feel like there are a couple things worth pointing out for added clarification.
    1) Amtrak is currently in the process of replacing all their train locomotives and carriages. They’re currently testing new Acela trains that will hopefully enter service sometime next year, and are building train cars to replace the ones used on your train, the Northeast Regional (as well as all the other routes). While your train has been refurbished within the last few years, the cars you rode in are over 40(!) years old, and nearing the end of their service lives. The new trains will be much nicer and have all the latest amenities that you’ll find on trains in Europe and Asia.
    2) 45 minutes is actually a pretty bad delay for your route. While it’s not the worst I’ve ever seen, the Northeast Corridor (DC-NY-Boston line) actually has pretty good punctuality. The reason it’s fine on this route, while other trains in the national system suffer hours of delays is because Amtrak themselves owns and operates the Corridor, while most of the track they use in the rest of the country is run by freight railroads which grant their own trains priority, delaying Amtrak trains. So I was sort of surprised to hear how late it was given that.
    3) Amtrak on the Corridor is very different from the rest of the system. I highly recommend trying out one of the long-distance routes sometime, ESPECIALLY the ones out west. No, it’s not by any means fast, and the trains may have seen better days, but it’s still quite an experience and one you won’t soon forget. Paul Lucas and Jeb Brooks made some some pretty good videos about them if you want to get a sense. You see the country from a completely different vantage point and you make a lot of new friends.
I’m also happy to hear you guys enjoyed Boston. It really is a beautiful place and is probably tied with DC for my favorite city in the U.S.! It’s just a super livable city, and has that nice old-world charm to it.
All in all, great video and enjoy your break!

Next time you leave from Boston, make sure to pick up the train from South Station. Not Back Bay Station. South Station is much nicer and much less stressful than Back Bay. Plus it's the fist stop, so you don't have to rush on or feel stressed looking for a seat.

While every Amtrak route is different, you generally can expect lots of space (in many cases more than what you had on this train) and reasonable cleanliness. There are problems with on-time performance outside the Northeast Corridor, mostly because in other regions it's freight railroads that own the tracks and they give priority to their own trains. At some point you should consider taking a U.S. sleeper train such as the California Zephyr or the Southwest Chief.

    • @ronclark9724
      @ronclark9724 3 місяці тому

Even in California Amtrak uses mostly freight railroad tracks whose dispatches work for the freight railroads. The dispatchers do know who puts butter on their bread, it isn't Amtrak. Furthermore I shall make the argument being a diabetic suffering recently on the shortage of Trulicity, recall the baby formula shortage not too long ago, the FREIGHT should have priority over whether passengers arrive on time. As in the film and novel DUNE, the spice MUST FLOW...

Amtrak aren’t so bad. We dislike many things about it, but we are glad when they exist. Northeast has the most variety and most connectedness that would resemble a European nation, while the rest of the country its less common. Some Trains are old and there is no “high speed”, however compared to other countries the prices are relatively decent.

New England and the Middle Atlantic states have Amtrak's northeast corridor. While the northeast corridor isn't new, it is the only regional railroad in the USA with overhead electricity powering the trains. The world's first overhead electric regional intercity trains... Both the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroads went bankrupt soon after building the overhead electric lines... And the world wonders why most of America's freight railroads haven't build overhead electric lines? Short line commuter trains yes, regional or long distance intercity trains NO....

    * Mystic is known for its historic seaport, where you can see what life would have been line in a colonial port town.
    * New Haven is known for its coal-fired pizza, which is the best in the country (and don't let those New Yorkers with their oversized floppy slices tell you otherwise!)

Passengers complain Amtrak trains on the northeast corridor aren't as fast as HSR in Europe or Asia, but didn't you notice the very nice homes along the New England coast? The NIMBYs would never allow Amtrak to run at 200 mph, or 300 km/ph adjacent to their homes. Simply put, New England and the Middle Atlantic states have too much urban and suburban sprawl for much higher speeds. Would you desire to live within 300 feet, or 100 meters of a HSR line?

Just catching up with this video now - as a former Connecticut resident, I was glad to see glimpses of Mystic, New London (a great little town, by the way), and New Haven.
I think the ride over the Hell Gate Bridge and the long viaduct over Queens, with the Manhattan skyline on your right, is one of the "great entrances into a city" - a nice bonus to be had from taking the train into Penn Station.

I'm so glad that Amtrak have upped their game on the Boston-New York route. I, however, cannot recommend the train fro Chicago to Seattle. I recently traveled The Empire Builder on that route and it was the worst train experience I have ever had. The ride was so rough there was no sleep. Being jolted around by either bad track or ancient carriages was a nightmare. In my sleeper coach there were two elderly couples who were afraid to move around the train because it was so dangerous. Kudos to our cabin attendant who brought their meals to their cabin. Windows were filthy and when the bed was made up for the night it was very obvious that the beds were not moved as the walls, then exposed, were dirty. I am an experienced traveler and have traveled from North of the Arctic Circle in Norway to Budapest in Hungary by train, but my wish to try an American train journey was on my bucket list. That bucket has gone on the scrap heap. Never again Amtrak.

Pricing can vary greatly depending on when you buy your tickets. For example, a ticket from New Haven to EWR can be only $25 if purchased in well in advance, but $80-$90 if you wait until a few days before departure (as I do). $62 BOS to NYC was likely very advanced purchase, maybe 30 days.
Also, NE regional is very popular with university students. The trains will be crammed when students are travel to and from school. You have Harvard, MIT, BU and dozens of other school in Boston, Brown in Providence, U. Rhode Island at Kingston, Conn. College and the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Yale in New Haven, Columbia, etc. in NYC. Any train between NYC and New Haven will have lots of Yalies on it.

Amtrak Northeast Corridor is pretty good for the most part, people from outside the US don't complain as much about the NEC. It's pretty up to world standards other than the old trains and some stations along the line that really look dreadful (such as the Back Bay Station, though some stations are architectural marvels like the William H Gray station or the Washington Union Station). Amtrak is bringing in new trains so that will really make everything much nicer. Amtrak has high ambitions (for the NEC), knows how to get there, and now are able to take some steps forward. I'm optimistic for them!

While the rest room is cleaned every night, during the day the rest rooms can get nasty as these cars are being used all day long. Unfortunately too many riders don't live up to my mom's golden rule. I live by Boston and usually take the bus when visiting NYC (which can get very scenic as it approaches the city), mostly because train (the non-Acela one) is *usually* much more expensive, but not always, especially if you book far ahead.

WOW I cant believe you were here- I wish I knew- Amtrak has two types of trains the HIGH SPEED (Acela) and the regional. Amtrak has just refitted the trains with NEW seats ( they used to be red) - I did go on both and in my opinion you were lucky you took the regional. See the acela saves about 20 minutes but the tracks were built in the 1890's - unlike europe where trains go 200mph because they were built that way. The acela tilts and if you try to walk when you are going around a corner- YIKES - I almost fell over. The max speed is 125mph unlike Europe= and the Acela is 150mph only for about 20 miles (about 25 mins out of boston into RI) Great video - by the way I cant believe all the stuff you got to see in Boston!! Thanks for reviewing the new trains- I havent been on them yet - but they look GREAT! (Amtrak is funded by our Federal Government by the way) At least they spend the money on something good! Thanks!!!

The Northeast Corridor rail is well-used and sales there subsidize the rest of the under-utilized Amtrak network. I know you said the tickets were cheap, but they are often pricey.

A month off? You do realize this is UA-cam and it’s 2023? We will all completely forget about you in a month! In about three months we’ll be like - “I wonder what happened to those nice Swedish fellows - Ben and Jerry?”

On a more serious note, I’m wondering if folks here would consider Boston the most “European” of American big cities.

I turn my back to the wind, to catch my breath, before I start off again
Driven on without a moment to spend, to pass an evening with a drink and a friend
I let my skin get too thin; I'd like to pause, no matter what I pretend
Like some pilgrim who learns to transcend, learns to live as if each step was the end
Time stand still, I'm not looking back but I want to look around me now
Time stand still, see more of the people and the places that surround me now

The crosswalk buttons are for crossing 2 streets. In other words to get to the opposite corner so the lights stay red twice as long. They don't speed up your wait time.l

You both should definitely try VIA Rail in Canada. VIA Rail is so much better especially with their business class product within north America compared to the Amtrak service in the USA.

Actually I’ve taken Via between T.O. and Montreal/Quebec City a number of times. The last time it was old 1950s train that was slow, antiquated and the business class seats weren’t that was different from coach, aside from the food service. Via is hit or miss.

As an American, I too wish we had the train equivalency as Europe. I realize our country is massive but there is no reason that regional high speed trains don't exist. San Diego to Vancouver. Chicago to NYC. Miami to Boston.

Instead of Starbucks, you should have tried Dunkin Donuts in Boston for the real local coffee experience! Enjoying the videos very much. In my opinion, Amtrak in the Northeast Corridor is the nicest in the country. Amtrak actually owns the tracks between DC and Boston (and I think also some of the tracks in Pennsylvania, between Philly and Harrisburg). So, I've found that in these areas the trains are most likely to be on time and are in fairly good condition. In my experience, when you're traveling in other parts of the country, it's not quite as nice, and definitely experience more delays. But the actual seats are much better on Amtrak than on any domestic airline, if you ask me! Much more comfortable and spacious. Plus, there's a foot rest, which I don't think you showed in your video! Safe travels!
