- Singapore and Malaysia are studying a special economic zone to boost growth and connectivity with each other. Both sides are also exploring a new ferry service and more frequent train services across the Causeway. These were discussed at the latest bilateral Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar Malaysia meeting. Singapore is the second-largest foreign investor in Johor, contributing about 70% of the Malaysian state's total foreign direct investment in manufacturing.

Basically they are going to establish easier transport of worker and goods to combat raising cost of living in Singapore by using Johor as Singapore's rented land.
It is an opportunity for both countries indeed. Singapore need more natural resources such as water & land whereas Malaysia need more job opportunities and investment. So why not?

Great news. If successfully implemented there will be economic growth for JB, and hoped that JB infrastructure of roads & public transport will also be improved. Hope the economic zone will have a township as successful as The Singapore-Suzhou Industrial Park or even better. That will uplift livehood and business opportunities from both sides and investments from foriegn MNCs.

Yes more cooperation and make it easier for both citizens to come & go between the two countries.
Increase the frequencies of the train with more compartments.
Johore had come to realize that it cannot depend on Putrajaya for its state's economy growth anymore, aside from annual low federal fund allocation for development projects. It must begin to partner with Singapore if it seriously want to uplift the living standard of its own residents within the State.
Its because of the tax system 100% tax will be given to the federal and they can only get back a piece of it. Setting up this economic zone is a great way to counter that
Currently the ferry service costs $70 and puts you miles away from JB city centre
Just consider the KTM dont need wait so long for a turnaround, every half an hour you run a service also can.
Slowly and steadily Singapore is being sucked in with all kinds of hopes and promises that will never pan out.
What more can us tiny singapore do in the future? It already had used all the development potential & at peak

no new companies wants to invest in sg anymore. even sg companies invest in johor. cost is too high in singapore. even workers need to use malaysian workers. the reason these economic zone were created in the first place is to make companies invest in sg again.

Ferry service seems like a good idea to avoid the bloody traffic jam. Langkawi and koh lipe has it. Why not singapore aand johor.
Also traffic jam . 10 hours wait on both side. Fantastic economy. petrol stations on both sides boomtown, Cars, buses, coaches, motorbike spare parts boomtown. Tempers flares boomtown.

As much i have to agree, Singapore needs more land to establish itself. Malaysia being the closest neighbour have the resources, from human capital, water, electricity as well as developed infrastructure.

Malaysia also intentionally build their chemical plant opposite of Singapore even though we complain about it.

SG economy will stagnate if dont expand overseas and MY is the closest land available. People don't think about how SG will have to compete with future ASEAN members that have land and natural resources. There's a reason why Tesla choose MY as a manufacturing hub and not SG
The easiest way to get more income for Malaysian government is to tax overseas workers or compulsory Kwsp contribution
Definitely a good idea to pursue. Besides factories and office spaces, also setup old folk's home and hospital so that we can send our old folk to Malaysia if we cannot afford the high fee in SG. This is previous minister's idea actually. Also if possible allow Singapore to buy cheap cheap Malaysia houses inside the Special Economic Zone so that those who cannot afford the expensive housing in SG can go live and die in Malaysia.
Singapore lost one GRC because MP Khaw suggested building old folks' homes in JB, which hurt most Singaporean's feelings, we, Singaporeans helped to build this country and sacrifice 2+10 years of national service, 2 million of foreign workers fighting jobs with Singaporeans, 1.5 million HDB flats, world most expensive cars, end of the day and PAP want to dump us in foreign land then we got no choice but have to vote out PAP.

We need to settle a lot of disputes with Malaysia before building an economic zone, we got much unhappiness with Malaysia, example Malaysia banned our CLOB shares, When Israel's PM visited Singapore, Malaysia's army force mobilize their troops at the coastline of JB, during Singapore national day Malaysia army force conduct military exercise against Singapore, also there are land disputes with Malaysia. Malaysia always threatens to cut off our water supply. Also, Malaysia reclaimed land at JB without our agreement. Also, on 18 March 2020 outbreak of covid, without coordination with Singapore, Malaysia just close the border.
