@@TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan ha ha only if I’m allowed to watch them recently we had a movie banned here about a shooting which caused uproar about censorship we can watch it but it was banned from cinemas. In protest my book club is now working it’s way through the banned books list well the ones that are palatable anyway a bunch of them are about Incest and things like that that no one would want to read
This is to say I do see your point about government being too controlling and how that can be too much at times it’s definitely a balancing act abd a slippery slope to live in a nanny state as we do
Also people outside of Nz probably don’t realise that we were at one point under military law which is a joke because we don’t have a military but the police used these added powers I should say abused these powers to search known drug dealers houses and make arrests and are now being hauled through the courts and charged for using the added powers afforded them to carry out searches without warrants a bunch of police have been fired all convictions had to be overturned and the independent inquiry is ongoing. What a huge mess a massive drug ring bust that now no one can be charged for. So yes there were abuses of power there always will be but even the police are subject to independent inquiry and get charged for abusing power even tho technically it was legal for them to enter those properties by the letter of the law they did not follow the intent of the law which was that they could enter to search for people who might be unwell and stuck due to covid like a wellfare check not a blimin drug bust.
We don’t have the same freedoms that Americans do we have laws about hate speech and we can protest peacefully but not picket abortion clinics or peoples funerals we can’t refuse to serve people because of their race religion or sexuality we have respect for human rights and the dignity of all that is different and it means we sacrifice personal freedoms for the greater good. I like Nz we have free health care and we have a good welfare system and we look after each other we don’t need to carry guns because no one does abd we don’t have school shootings or gun problems because of this including our police not needing to be armed and therefore using deadly force on people. Sure we can’t say hateful things and we can’t carry guns but we are safe from gun violence because of this and our rights as individuals are respected by people not being able to hate speech. We don’t sue here so there’s more freedoms for people in that way because people aren’t worried about getting sued for saying or doing something someone else doesn’t agree with. We have compensation for accidents and things that go wrong in medical procedures or with health care providers without needing to sue it’s government scheme we all pay into and then we are covered for accident or injury of any kind without needing to go to court. Freedom isnit the most important thing to me because no man is an island we are interdependent on each other and we sacrifice for the common good and our democracy works so it’s not imposed by someone we didn’t pick
Your healthcare isn't free, you pay for it through your taxes. The system works fine for young people that generally have small health issues that go away with treatment. When you have a serious chronic condition or get old enough to have multiple issues, that's where it gets very dicey. Small populations with high GDP can handle it, but large populations of old people cause major issues for the patients. Pray you're not one of them when you get old. Hate crime laws will, inevitably, be abused by one of your future politicians, who will redefine hate speech in terms of the group or the words--- You might object, but don't voice that objection. You are only ALLOWED to protest certain things in a certain way. Anything that actually challenges your elites will be disallowed if it threatens their power. You live in a gilded cage where you are allowed certain things, for now. Eventually, our oligarchs or someone else's will arrive at your shore. They will bribe your government and media, who will convince you to give up some of those niceities you outlined for "the common good". They will define the "common good" and you will be helpless to do anything about it, assuming you even question your overlords at all. Enjoy your system while it lasts.
Good movie just saw it
