Hi it's me again - commenting again on my own video lol
First up, expect a follow up - but please know it won't be this week/weekend for my own sanity's sake. I've done some digging into Liah's (former) church, and I think it might be most helpful to have a broad conversation about churches/cults and how they operate. I hate that I know I'm the person to do this video (what did I study? Nutrition, psychology and.... religion. Yeah.) The issue involves corruption within religious institutions combined with the psychology utilized to fool people into joining. I got this fam. Oh AND I grew up in a cult. And I'm LGBT+. Goooood lord, we'll chat. We have to?!
But give me some time to post that as I want to put up a quality video for you all
Secondly, PLEASE know this issue is not about Korean brands. Mistakes can happen with any brand out there. I absolutely understand hesitation at the moment, but in a time where Asians are already dealing with utterly horrible hatred and attacks, there's no need to direct this issue towards Korean brands. The hesitation that I take from this whole issue is on the need for testing and retesting. I think we as a community need to demand this from ALL brands (especially those who carry sunscreen).
    Thanks for reading 💖

I feel really bad that the SPF thing is making people send hate towards all Koreans brands. That's just really uncalled for. People are really missing the fact that the Korean brands are literally the only ones refunding customers. No western brand has done that when their sunscreens have been shown to perform poorly. Also, I highly recommend Odile Monod's recent video on this issue. She gives insight on how the regulation process works.

    Hi everyone.
I say at the end of this video that this is all the drama. Unfortunately, I've since been made aware of yet another problem with Krave Beauty.
Apparently, the CEO (Liah) is associated with a homophobic church. In case you didn't know, I am part of the LGBTQIA community myself - and this is something that simply would not be acceptable to me.
I left a "church" for similar reasons many years ago: if you stand against something, you cannot be a part of it. You're either an ally or you're not. Not both. You choose what and who you align yourself with.
I will continue to look into this.

This is more problematic to me than the SPF issue (even though I still think they should have warned customers as soon as they thought it might not meet the standards instead of the repackaging non sense). she can believe whatever she wants but her brand portrays a very progressive and inclusive image and that's where queer people feel duped. What bothers me even more is her cis gender influencer friends accepting her apology as if it's theirs to accept. Anyway it's all pretty sad and I hope everyone grows from this experience and makes better choices.

@@sleepycat_ada8210 it's in NYC. I don't want to get anything wrong with the details but I highly encourage you to read the Reddit post about this which explains why this mega church is particularly problematic. I am a South Asian myself and I understand that if you have grown up in a country or community where LGBTQ+ rights are not inherently recognized, it can be hard to question your own faith. It is a journey and I am still learning so I can give anyone that benefit of doubt. But what I don't appreciate is then trying to portray a very different image when it comes to brand marketing and also behaving like you are the victim in the apology video.

So not that long ago, I purchased some eyeshadow palettes from Sephora. I have an actually allergy to talc. On the Sephora website, the ingredients list was without talc. I got them, used them...broke out in hives all around my eye area.
I went to the companies website and sure as s***...talc. The ingredient deck was COMPLATETLY different.
I called Sephora's customer service and argued with them over the coarse of a week. I have since checked and they FINALLY updated the website OVER A MONTH LATER.
Don't trust them as far as I can throw them.

When I worked at sephora, refunds were issued for anything purchased within a month. However, we did accept exchanges up to a year! So I would still take it back to the store and at least try and get an exchange or store credit and when they ask be honest! Tell them it's because they lied to you online and have since redacted their claim!

Thanks for talking about these topics, beyond the specifics of each issue I think it is important for customers to know the types of things that go on so they are less likely to be duper (though I admit it can be impossible to "know" about many of these issues).
Just to toss in my 2 cents as an attorney on the "legal" decision to withhold testing results, I believe the claims of legal and privacy considerations is a partial answer. From the legal perspective this information is possibly discoverable if a trial or government action were ever to bring courts into the mix, but I can see an attorney warning the company that disclosure of the information publicly increases the likelihood of litigation or governmental penalties. It is also conceivable that confidentiality provisions in their testing contracts may prohibit the release of reports (such reports could contain trade secrets in the way they are formed or the descriptions of the tests performed), though I find it unlikely that the actual resulting SPF would be confidential with a well drafted contract. I could even see a situation where disclosures about the sunscreen could violate the agreement with the labs that formulated the product. Krave specifically may face more problems than most in this sense given the "kind of a sunscreen" dance they did when selling to the US (if I recall correctly this was because the filters used were not approved by the USDA, as is the case with most modern chemical filters regardless of efficacy). If what Liah said in her video is true, she may also not wish to rely on any of the information she's received by providing exact numbers given how likely it is that an independent third party finds a different result (none of the labs seem fully consistent).
All that said, I believe that all companies involved are simply performing cost/benefit analyses on whether the goodwill that may (no guarantee) result from the transparency outweighs the risk associated with disclosure. Different businesses will handle the matter different, and when dealing with the great unknown of public opinion it's hard to say what the best path forward is. One thing I will note however is that for all the credit being given to these companies for refunds, notice the fine print. Most refunds include purchases for a limited time window (I have a bottle from Krave and Purito that were purchased approximately a year before and therefore did not meet the 6 month windows), must be filed by a certain date, and often have other relevant details (max quantity, returns for credit not cash, etc.). To me this is further evidence that they are making calculated decisions about how to mitigate long term damages and liability as part of their plans.
Now for the hard part... I can't say I consider the companies wrong for mitigating risk via limited transparency or half-assed return policies. I expect most organizations would handle similar matters in this type of way, and I feel it is relevant that most of these organizations at fault relied on false data from their developers. While that doesn't absolve them of all moral or legal responsibility, I am far more bothered by the organizations knowingly lying about products. The sunscreen developers running a scam, Herbivore lying about ingredients, Sunday Riley intentionally placing misleading reviews, even marketing teams claiming amazing results from basic or crappy ingredients knowing such claims to be fake. Those organizations are more overtly attempting to mislead the customer and that's what really bothers me.

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole
      @AliceintheRabbitHole  3 роки тому +2

Thank you for sharing that information! Yes, it does make sense from a PR perspective. And (prior to finding out about the church... and now failure to pay BIPOC creators as well) initially, I wasn't too upset about Krave's response. Mistakes happen and they did own up to it. Of course this bigger picture information is problematic though.
Absolutely agree on all the other nonsense that goes on. I'm a tiny content creator, but I've still seen a slice of that world. Rest assured, there are questionable actions going on with some brands (and some content creators tbh). That doesn't mean it's every brand nor every person - but we do have to be vigilant and aware.

What a bummer of a video. I was a little disappointed in the lack of transparency with Krave, but I never used Beet the Shield (or Sun) mostly because it was fairly pricey for a sunscreen for me. However, the Matcha Hemp cleanser is my HG, and I am now considering dropping the company as a whole upon learning about the church she's affiliated with. Also, I deeply appreciate you mentioning that incorrect labeling on sunscreen is rampant far beyond just Korean companies. I hope we can reframe the discussion of this from one race to discussing how capitalism CAN be a corrupting factor, the world over. Well. Now I sound loony. Thanks just the same. The face that she's associated with a homophobic institution makes me a lot angrier than the spf thing because she was posting social justice things on insta and bragging about how her company mainly employs women and people of colour, all while supporting a homophobic instituition??? Huh? So she supports the two marginalized groups she's part of but LGBTQ people don't count? It's ok to discriminate against /those/ marginalized people? Sorry but you can't brag about how your brand is inclusive as a marketing gimmick because you know it'll make your brand more popular among young people and then not give a shit about other communities that face hate. It makes her look selfish and two faced, and that goes way beyond skincare.

I always wanted to try the Krave sunscreen and I was so pissed that it was so expensive here in Canada (I'm not paying forty dollars plus shipping for such a tiny bottle of sunscreen, sorry but that really isnt affordable to the average person) so I guess the upside of being poor and never getting to try a bunch of these products is it keeps you from trying a lot of overhyped things that are actually mediocre at best and dangerous at worst. It's also really weird when people go out of their way to defend these internet famous youtube people, it's some sort of bizarre form of celebrity worship, we really need to remember they're mainly here for their business and to make money, they're not our friends and we definitely dont need to defend them like they're our mothers when they mess up. They dont care about me like that so I dont care about them like that either. After the homophobic church thing I get angry when I see Liah's vids now tbh. Her whole fake sweet and innocent thing was obviously just a front to seem "relatable". I've seen people try to defend her on reddit and it's pathetic. Some people treat their skincare obsession almost like some sort of cult. They're just products, you don't need to form some sort of obsessive emotional attachment to CEOs of companies. It's sad.
I also think youtubers like Gothamista and a lot of other really popular ones seem a little gullible themselves, I mean I remember when they were overhyping the inkey list like it was liquid gold or something and that brand has also had some sketchy problems with their ingredients lists and things showing up in completely different places on the list depending on where you buy it. Pretty funny when you consider that their brand name literally means ingredients list in british colloquial speech. I use skincare but I'm also tired of people treating it like it's some sort of magical cure-all. We're all going to age regardless and that's perfectly fine, I swear some people are going to have an emotional breakdown when they're 50 and they realize that no amount of skincare will make you look 26 forever.

OMG I feel all of this so much. Stan culture is so confusing to me??
And I really, really dislike the anti aging rhetoric. I think some people are forgetting that it's a privilege to age - a privilege that not every person has. So what if our bodies show that we have experienced life!? So WHAT!?
Yes, sunscreen is important - so we don't risk our lives to skin cancer. But aging? It's not this end-of-the-world that I often see it perceived to be.
And the inkey list absolutely has done a few sketchy things. Not that other brands haven't, but it goes to show that stanning people or brands can be a very dangerous mindset. We should be on guard even with the brands we enjoy - because we DO enjoy them and want to see them continue to make the best products they can

Wow, wow, wow.. Have you tried contacting Sephora customer service by email? High key you should "demand" a refund because you have proof they rewrote it. I'll shoot an email as well because I thought I was just skimming or not remembering right on a few Sephora blurbs. For Herbivore, they might just say "ingredient's lists change"? This is very disappointing. This skincare companies should have their things tested third party.
Edit: Forward this to the ladies of Beauty News! Do you watch them? I think you all might get along well.
