COD devs do this often to make a connection between guns in different games. In BOCW, the previous game in Black ops line, the colt model 609 rifle also known as XM177E1 was also erroneously designated as XM4. It was presumably done for simplicity purposes. In BO6 they did it just to make a callback.
In the past they always got the gun names correctly... Even in MW2 the M16 model was correctly named.. Now they cant name shit correctly to a point they almost invent names, that is called being a lazy ass, not like they put effort on making the games good, 4 years in development btw (even tho is clear that is a lie).
@@ChikuEnjoyer It is not lazy at all, Activision as a whole is a Californian company, California laws are strict about them shipping games with real guns as this could lead to them getting lawsuits of gun violence victim's families suing Acti over potentially advertising real guns (Look into the 2009 Remington ACR lawsuits involving MW2), these lawsuits go over for years, cost money that we know Acti won't want to spend and overall complicates development time as they need to get brand deals with these manufacturers. I'm not defending BO6, enjoy it or hate it, but I'm tired of all these complaints on the weapons of CoD, I'm sure these devs would want to include 1:1 depictions of these guns but Acti does not want to deal with endless lawsuits and a longer development time as they wait for companies to let them borrow their gun names and designs.

I like Call of Duty but they rename existing guns name to non sense names just to avoid "copyright" issues. It's weird for a multi million company can't even afford to feature real stuff from IRL, compared to other small companies such as Project Aces and Battlefield, they did really good at it
It's actually because California, where the studio that makes the games are produced, there's a law that makes it illegal to put real world weapons in a game that minors can play.
If I’m being honest, the Model 723 actually works better for the setting and tone of the game than an actual XM4. A lot of 90s action movies used carbines with A1-style upper receivers and M16A1s mocked up as A2s (for example, The Rock) as it would have been more difficult for armorers to get their hands on current military spec equipment, along with the burst fire not being as exciting as full auto in a movie.
Yep. Also Delta Force were using 723 and 727 rifles around that time. Larry Vickers talks about it in one of his videos. It’s also plausible that the SAS in-game would have had them since they used to use HK and Colt carbines at some point.
Great Video. According to The M4 Carbine by Chris McNab. The Army wanted a carbine version of the M16A2 in 1983, because dismounting from then new vehicles were seen as to slow wielding an M16A2, therefore special mechanized infantry should get a lighter weapon. While the Marines at the same time tested body armor and found out that the combat load of the grenadier was to heavy, therefore the M203 guy should get a lighter weapon. To prevent Army and Marines from adopting different carbines the XM4 Program was founded in 1984 and in 1985 the first 40 XM4 carbine were delivered by Colt. After a view changes the weapon was type classified in 1987 as "US, carbine, 5.56mm, M4" but only 892 were delivered in the same year but the US congress denied the founding and the program was put on hold until 1993 when the need of a shorter weapon reemerged.
2 things to mention 1.-As a Spanish speaker, the subtitles have been very helpful, thank you very much for that detail, it is really appreciated 2.-I don't know if it's me but as a total ignoramus of weapons, I feel that the reloading sound of the weapons is too "plastic" so to speak, they seem like they were recently manufactured weapons made of polymers instead of aluminum from that time A very good video, thank you very much as well as thank you for your services
Knew this thing was a travesty the second I saw someone playing this game in Discord. For those who somehow still don't understand what's going on with guns in cod I'll give a very short TLDR, Activision is based in California which as we know has really funny gun laws so they can't put the the accurate gun models in cod, that's why they always make little changes to the guns, also in recent years they've hade problems with some gun manufacturers that marked up their prices for the use of their licensed gun names in Cod so that's why we often get made up gun names (kastov in mw reboot series😮💨) or old gun designations in the games. There's much much more to this but you could check that up yourself
The game has it like that because they don't want to get copyrighted by the main gun company, and same as many of the Chinese gun makers when recreating firearms
i always hated how they made the M16's in the game burst fire. In Modern Warfare I can excuse it, but the Black Ops series' long rifles annoyed tf outta me like if u wanted a burst-fire gun for the game just throw in the Famas Better yet, don't put burst-fire guns in games at all there's an idea
I wished they had paid more attention to this. I was very disappointed about this. Especially since the 90s has a great balance between Cold War armaments and the future forwards designs of US/NATO allied weapons. Instead, we got some extremely odd choices.
@@munanchoinc The "XM4" in Black Ops 6 is also misplaced. They should have used the XM177 instead. This weapon was used by Coalition forces in the Gulf War.
I enjoyed the game but every so often I'd just be turned off by whatever guns I found lying around I believe one of the red sights they have in game are literally attached in reverse with the emitter just facing you because they thought it was an eotech?... but then you find out they already have an eotech style sight ???
